It is pure music there is great intimacy and great reflection. When you experience a Schubert symphony, you come out of the hall enriched, says Riccardo Muti. Throughout the CSO s 2013/14 season, Maestro Muti and the CSO traverse the complete Schubert symphonies, beginning with the Third and Fourth Symphonies, which bookend a program that also includes the world premiere of Giovanni Sollima s Double Cello Concerto, a CSO commission. CSO Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma and the composer are the soloists.

Randolph Drive Mason Bates, Mead Composer-in-Residence Anna Clyne, Mead Composer-in-Residence BATES String Band MATALON Traces II (World premiere) CLYNE The Lost Thought Tickets: $10 $25 Curated by Mason Bates and Anna Clyne, the CSO s two Mead Composers-in-Residence, and led by Principal Conductor Cliff Colnot, MusicNOW provides a rare opportunity to experience concerts completely dedicated to music by living composers. This MusicNOW concert features new works by Clyne and Bates, as well as the world premiere of Martin Matalon s Traces II for solo viola and live electronics. Argentinian composer Martin Matalon is the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship, le prix de L Institut de France Académie des Beaux Arts, the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and a Fulbright scholarship to France. Matalon lives and works in Paris, where he recently collaborated with L Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) on a series of scores for the films of Luis Bunuel.

Italian composer Ennio Morricone s Voices from the Silence, also a first CSO performance, was written to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001, and was first performed in the U.S. at the United Nations in 2007, conducted by the composer. Maestro Muti led the world premiere at the Ravenna Festival, which commissioned the piece. Both the Schubert Mass and Voices from the Silence feature the Chicago Symphony Chorus. Saturday, February 8, 2014, 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Alien Invasion: Orchestra from Planet X Members of the Cristian Macelaru, conductor Magic Circle Mime Company Program to include: MILLER Overture to Planet X COPLAND Variation on a Shaker Melody from Appalachian Spring GILLIS Symphony X, (Big D) COPLAND Hoe-Down from Rodeo GOTTSCHALK Symphony No.1 ANDERSON The Typewriter WILLIAMS The Flying Theme from E.T.: The Extra- Terrestrial Tickets: $6 $57 Conductor Cristian Macelaru and members of the take the audience on a journey to answer the question of what happens when musical worlds collide. The musical portion of the program is introduced with a discussion and slide presentation given by Art Institute curators, and following the performance, patrons receive a guided gallery tour featuring artworks relating to the concert s theme. In this concert, the Meridian String Quartet performs quartets by Bartók and Brahms as part of an exploration of wild animal energy and escape in the paintings of Eugene Delacroix. Symphony Center Presents Piano Series Sunday, February 9, 2014, 3 p.m. Daniil Trifonov, piano STRAVINSKY Serenade in A Major DEBUSSY Selections from Images, Book 1 RAVEL Selections from Miroirs SCHUMANN Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13 Tickets: $20 $78 Prodigiously talented young pianist Daniil Trifonov, just 22 years old, makes his Symphony Center recital debut after making a solo appearance at the 2011/12 Chicago Piano Day as part of the Keys to the City Piano Festival and his highly praised CSO debut in the 2012/13 season. Winner of both the 2011 Rubenstein and Tchaikovsky competitions, Trifonov s program is highlighted by Schumann s Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13 a set of 12 studies that are as technically demanding as they are lush and expressive. Also on the program are selections from Ravel s Miroirs, Stravinsky s Serenade in A Major and and selections from Book One of Debussy s Images.
5 Symphony Center Presents Chamber Music Series Wednesday, February 12, 2014, 8 p.m. Joshua Bell, violin Sam Haywood, piano Program to include: TARTINI Violin Sonata in G Minor (The Devil's Trill) BEETHOVEN Violin Sonata No. 10 in G Major, Op. 96 STRAVINSKY Divertimento from The Fairy's Kiss for Violin and Piano Tickets: $35 $111 Last heard at Symphony Center in January 2012, violinist Joshua Bell returns for another recital performance with pianist Sam Haywood. Among his many accolades, Bell recently won the Diapason d or award from France s Diapason magazine for his most recent recording, French Impressions. For this performance, Bell will play Tartini s Devil s Trill Sonata, inspired by the composer s dream of a violin performance by the Devil, followed by Beethoven s 10 th Violin Sonata and a divertimento from Stravinsky s one-act ballet, The Fairy s Kiss. BACH Symphony in G Minor, Op. 6, No. 6 HAYDN Symphony No. 100 in G Major, (Military) Tickets: $31 $214 Nicholas McGegan leads a program featuring a distinctive set of baroque operatic arias performed by mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux, mostly chosen from arias made popular by the famous 18th-century castrato Farinelli. Alongside these examples of vocal fireworks by Porpora, Hasse and Broschi, McGegan leads the CSO in Bach s Sinfonia in G Minor, Op. 6, No. 6, Handel s Concerto Grosso in C Major, Op. 6, No. 1 and Haydn s Symphony No. 100 in G Major (Military) on February 13 and 18. The Haydn symphony is also examined in a Beyond the Score presentation on February 14 and 16.
6 Beyond the Score Friday, February 14, 2014, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, February 16, 2014, 3 p.m. Nicholas McGegan, conductor Gerard McBurney, creative director HAYDN Symphony No. 100 in G Major (Military) Tickets: $24 $130 The astoundingly prolific, witty and inventive Joseph Haydn is frequently referred to as the father of the symphony. Conductor and baroque music expert Nicholas McGegan leads this presentation of Haydn s Military Symphony, the eighth of the 12 so-called London symphonies, which would be the composer s final contributions to that genre. This exploration takes audiences to late-18th-century London, a bustling metropolis whose newly-wealthy citizens were eagerly seeking the latest cultural delights. Symphony Center Presents Jazz Series Saturday, February 15, 2014, 8 p.m. The Spring Quartet Jack DeJohnette, drums Joe Lovano, saxophone Esperanza Spalding, bass Leo Genovese, piano Gregory Porter, vocals Tickets: $30 $95 The SCP Jazz series offers a special Saturday night performance of the newly formed all-star DeJohnette- Lovano-Spalding-Genovese Quartet consisting of two of jazz s old guard: 2012 NEA Jazz Master, Chicago native and legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette and multiple Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Joe Lovano, paired with two of jazz s stellar younger generation: 2011 Best New Artist Grammy-winning bassist Esperanza Spalding and Argentinian pianist Leo Genovese. Though this performance marks the first time that these four artists have all performed together, they are no strangers to collaboration. The evening opens with the Symphony Center debut of soul and jazz vocalist Gregory Porter. He burst onto the scene in 2010 with his breakthrough debut album, Water, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2011; his 2012 follow-up, Be Good, boasts a 2013 Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B performance for Real Good Hands.

The Civic Orchestra of Chicago season continues with Nicholas McGegan, music director of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, making his Civic debut with a program of works for smaller ensemble that evoke the intimacy of chamber music. The program includes Bach s Orchestral Suite No. 3 and Brahms Serenade No. 1. In addition to his concentration on the Baroque era, McGegan has written extensively about Brahms music and he led Brahms two Serenades with the Philharmonia Baroque on period-accurate instruments for a recording released in December Symphony Center Presents Special Concert Wednesday, February 19, 2014, 8 p.m. Soweto Gospel Choir Tickets: $20 $62 The internationally renowned Soweto Gospel Choir, winner of two Grammy Awards, brings an inspirational program that blends African gospel, Negro spirituals, reggae, and popular music to Symphony Center. Founded in 2002 and drawing members from the many churches in and around Soweto, South Africa, the choir combines earthy rhythms and rich harmonies in both a cappella numbers and songs backed by their four-piece band and percussion section. Their energetic dancing and colorful costumes make this concert a feast for the eyes and ears.

He selected Macelaru to lead the CSO in a program that juxtaposes Debussy s Jeux and Ravel s Trois poèmes de Mallarmé with several of Stravinsky s works: Three Japanese Lyrics, Two Poems of Balmont, Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo, Berceuses du Chat, Suite from Pulcinella and the Suite No. 1 for Small Orchestra. Symphony Center Presents Chamber Music Series Friday, February 21, 2014, 8 p.m. Yo-Yo Ma, cello Emanuel Ax, piano BRAHMS Cello Sonata No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 38 BRAHMS Sonata in D Major, Op. 78 for Cello and Piano BRAHMS Cello Sonata No. 2 in F Major, Op. 99 Tickets: $76 $195 Due to preparation time constraints, Anders Hillborg s The MAX Duo, a new work for cello and piano commissioned for Emanuel Ax s Brahms Project, will not receive its premiere on the February 21 Symphony Center Presents Chamber Series program. Instead, pianist Emanuel Ax and cellist Yo-Yo Ma will perform Brahms Sonata in D Major, Op. 78 in addition to the two Brahms sonatas originally on the program, the Cello Sonata No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 38 and the Cello Sonata No. 2 in F Major, Op. 99.
