OBJECTIVES To bring arts and music to the community to play & enjoy! To make the arts accessible & fun! To connect people through community involvement, interaction & bonding. To raise awareness for the organisations involved. To foster the spirit of giving and sharing.

6 Piano Guardian Roles & Responsibilities

7 PIANO GUARDIANS Be present at piano for 3-hour shift Unlock / lock piano according to shift (if applicable) Accompany the piano whilst it is open to the public. Cover piano with rain cover in case of wet weather. (if applicable) Ensure that piano is litter-free. Encourage public to participate in the project.

8 How will I know whether I need to lock, unlock, raincover, no raincover etc? Please refer to checklist sent by Manager, or under piano bench lid. If your stool does not have a lid, then please refer to list sent by Manager.

9 PIANO GUARDIAN MANAGERS Create group chat / text piano guardians. Remind and ensure that the volunteer is there by start of shift / unlocking hours. Receive photo of the volunteer at the piano to prove their presence. Follow up with the volunteer and ensure that they have locked the piano / handover / placed things in order and take a photo again (if applicable). Advise and assist the volunteer with their queries should anything occur during the 3-hour shift.

10 REPORTING PROCEDURES Guardians to notify respective Managers upon arrival at location with a selfie with the piano. Managers to send the checklist to Guardians. Managers may also call to relay the information. Guardians to complete checklist. Guardians to check for any damages / vandalism. Volunteer to snap a photo of the piano her volunteer manager.

15 START OF SHIFT PROCEDURES Set bench combination lock to 274. Open piano bench, refill maps. Fold away rain cover and store in piano bench. (if applicable) Set keyboard lid lock to 274. Unlock and open. Place lock in piano bench. Close bench and lock it. Reset numbers. Have fun! 274

16 END OF SHIFT PROCEDURES Set bench combination lock to 274. Open piano bench. Take out rain cover (if applicable). Take out keyboard lid lock, set it to 274. Lock keyboard cover. 274 Close bench and lock it. Tuck bench under piano. Take rain cover and put over piano. (if applicable) Inform manager and take photo. Say bye to piano!

17 MIDDLE SHIFT PROCEDURES Say hello to the previous guardian! Notify Manager of handover from the other guardian. Take your selfie and send to manager. Give piano a hug. 274

22 LATE HAND OVERS What do you do in the event that the next guardian is running late and you need to leave and the piano cannot be left unattended? Kindly let the public know that the piano will be closed until the next guardian arrives. Lock & Cover piano.

29 WET WEATHER Please do not forget to cover piano before seeking shelter yourself! Please remember to uncover piano AFTER the rain has stopped! Fold rain cover flat and let dry / cover back piano after your shift end.

30 People Scenarios What-to-do s & FAQ

31 EVENTS & PRORAMMES Refer to event map / website for scheduled performances at your piano. If there are none listed, that means there are none! Inform people around 10 mins prior to performance start. This encourages people to stay, and for people already playing to give way!

32 THE HOGGER What do you do in the event that someone decides that the piano is his new best friend and he does not want to share? How long, is TOO long? > 20 mins or if there is a reasonable amount of people waiting.

33 THE HOGGER Go to the Hogger s eye level when communicating. Be firm and polite. Do not provoke or be rude. Do not inch them off the chair :D Let the Hogger know that there are people waiting and suggest to share the piano after they complete their last song. Explain the sharing aspect of the project and that the other members of the community want to have a go too. If all else fails, suggest to the people waiting to leave their number with you and you can call to let them know when the piano is available.

34 THE SHY ONE You notice someone lingers, disappears, re-appears and is as curious as a cat. Smile! Strike up a conversation and ask if they are interested to play the piano. If they are too shy to start, you start! MAKE THEIR DAY! Just tinker, whether you know how to play or not, some people need more encouragement than others.

35 THE KAYPOH ONE THE KAYPOH ONE THE KAYPOH ONE This is your chance! SHARE with them about the project GIVE them an event map (and everybody else for that matter) RAISE awareness for the organisation who painted that piano. ASK them to share the info too!

37 VANDALISM What do you do in the event that someone is vandalising or has vandalised the piano? Kindly inform the vandaliser to stop. Do not use physical contact to stop him / her. Notify volunteer manager of vandalism (include photos). If you are threatened, do not pursue or engage. Seek help from passerbys.

38 UNSAVOURY LYRICS What do you do in the event that someone is singing a song that uses expletives or inciting discord. Kindly inform the person to stop. Do not provoke or be rude. Notify volunteer manager. If you are threatened, do not pursue or engage. Seek help from passerbys.

39 LITTERING What do you do in the event that someone is leaving their rubbish behind / had left their trash? Kindly inform the person (if still around) that the pianos are to be kept litter-free. Ask them to throw it in the bin located.. (indicate the nearest bin). If rubbish is left, please use cleaning kit to pick up and dispose of unwanted trash.

40 EATING WHILE PLAYING What do you do in the event that someone is eating at the piano? Kindly inform the person that eating is not allowed on the piano. Clean up the piano after they leave if he/she does not follow your instruction.

41 PHONE BATT DIES What do you do in the event that your phone is going to die? Volunteer manager s / PMIY admin team s number is placed inside the piano bench. Inform manager / admin. If phone has already died, then please proceed to borrow a phone or use a public pay phone to contact manager and inform them.

42 IF YOU ARE UNWELL / EMERGENCIES What do you do in the event that you feel unwell or need to leave urgently? Inform Manager. Do you require assistance? Do you need to go to the loo? Lock up before you leave.
