This year, TechFest 33 will be held at the Mystic Lake Hotel Casino, May 16-18, 2017 and is now open for enrollment for all slot techs. Are You The Slot Manager? This year, I am pleased to announce a world-class training event for slot managers that will run as a separate program alongside TechFest 33. You ve probably heard of Lucien Wijsman and his Slot Academy. The Slot Academy has a reputation for delivering a huge amount of practical material in a manner that is both informative and super entertaining. If you think slot math is boring, think again. For a few years, I have been trying to bring the Slot Academy in to run their program alongside TechFest. It s a natural fit and it rounds out TechFest so there s something for everyone, not just the slot techs. Lucien s a busy fellow but this year, our schedules matched and the Slot Academy has agreed to appear at TechFest 33. This is a fully-credentialed and accredited slot management program (attendees receive full credit from UNR-the University of Nevada at Reno) and will be held alongside TechFest 33 at Mystic Lake Hotel Casino. This is the real deal. It s three full days of slot management training, taught by one of the gaming world s most respected casino professionals. Slot Academy is part of the UNR extended studies program. This means that attendees to the Slot Academy get credits towards the UNR Gaming Management Program. They also receive a certificate from UNR for completing the Slot Academy course. Topics covered during the event include (but are not limited to): Slot Machine Meters According to SAS protocol Slot Machine Myth and Math Progressive and Mystery Prize Management Floor layout Management Please note that this three-day program is being offered at a substantial discount, in order to more closely align with the lower cost of the TechFest program. The full, three-day Slot Academy is $ Outside of TechFest, this training costs $ I am grateful to the Slot Academy for making this training opportunity available at TechFest 33 and that it s being offered at such a deeply discounted rate. I m not entirely certain that we ll be able to repeat the program at TechFest 34 so if you can make it to Mystic Lake Casino this May, please take advantage of the offer. I expect this will be a soldout event. Please note as well that this is a no-nonsense training event: No golf tournaments (for charity or otherwise), no meet and greets and no cocktail parties. It is three, jam-packed days of firstclass training at a world-class casino with a really great lunch served to you each day. What else could you possibly want? Slot techs... Bring your boss! 4 Slot Tech Feature Article UP220-AE Power Supply Repair By Nathan Galloway Recently on the slot tech forums, someone wanted to know how to repair the UP220-AE power supply. If you are not familiar with this power supply, it can be found on the back of a 32" Tatung monitor in a Bally Alpha Pro machine. The purpose of these power supplies is to provide the Tatung monitor with three different voltages: +5v, +12v, and +24v. When the request was posted on the forums, I had never tried to troubleshoot these power supplies but I did have two bad power supplies on the repair bench. After extracting the power supply from its casing, the first component I tested was the fuse and determined it was truly bad; it was open. Once I determined the AC input fuse F1 was bad, the next component I tested was the MOSFET. The Q1 MOSFET tested fine; the only obviously bad component on the power supply was capacitor C11. C11 is one of the output filter capacitors for the +24v. One fuse and one output filter capacitor could not be the only bad components with this power supply. Editor s Note: with a blown fuse, we are typically looking for a shorted component and, generally speaking, electrolytic capacitors do not shortcircuit when they fail. In fact, it s generally just the opposite. Their internal ESR (equivalent series resistance) will INCREASE to the point that they become unusable. It is this undesirable, internal resistance that causes the Page 4

Page 5

capacitors to heat up, which in turn causes the familiar domed capacitor as the liquid electrolyte inside the capacitor disassociates, producing Hydrogen gas, inflating the aluminum can of the device AND causing the familiar domed effect, indicative of a bad electrolytic capacitor.-rf If you are at all familiar with power supply repair, you might have noticed that some capacitors never seem to display any physical signs of being defective. You would not even know they were defective until you tested them with some type of capacitor analyzer. This is typically true of small capacitors. My initial reply on the Slot Tech Forum was to replace F1, C18, C28, and C39. I had forgotten to mention C13 but I did not forget to replace it with the other previously mentioned components. After replacing the one fuse and five capacitors, I tested the power supply. The only output voltage I was getting was the +5v. I was not getting any output voltages on the +12 or +24. Closer inspection on the trace side of the power supply PCB, I noticed one of the pins on B2 connector had the marking on/off. 12v Test Point and On/Off pin on backside of Power Supply its working status, then I that on/off pin to returned the fixed power determine the minimum supply to the bench for voltage required to activate further testing. At this the 12v and 24v. stage in the Apparently this power troubleshooting process, I supply does not provide the started to provide voltage to 12v and 24v to the monitor Since I was unable to fully activate the power supply on the repair bench, I installed it in a monitor on the casino floor to confirm Page 6

until it gets at least +1.37v applied to that on/off pin, most likely provided by the A/D board of the monitor. It would not be practical to use casino floor games to test all newly repaired power supplies. I wanted a tool to send enough voltage to that on/off pin. The tool I created utilized a resistor divider circuit. I would use the +5v output of the power supply and extract +1.66v and apply that voltage to the on/off pin. I used three resistors, all having the same value: 150 Ohms. I soldered two resistors in series giving me a combined total of 300 Ohms. This 300 Ohm resistor would be the R1 in my resistor divider circuit while the remaining 150 Ohm resistor would be the R2 in that circuit. I assembled the resistors, pins and a connector in a very crude but effective tool. Please remember this power on/off tool was created with spare parts I had in the shop and is very crude but still gets the job done. For the power on/ off connector, I used TE Connectivity receptacle housing The crimp pin for the TE Connectivity housing, I used JST Sales America SPH-002T-P0.5S. Nathan Galloway Slot Technician Argosy Casino Riverside, Mo Here is a list of parts I replaced to repair this power supply: Editor s Note: Still surprising that this failure blew the fuse. Generally speaking, you re looking for a semiconductor failure on the primary side of the power supply when it blows the fuse. Can anyone else weigh in on this?-rf Page 7

Slot Tech Feature Article Quick & Simple Repairs #125 By Pat Porath IGT Party Time Upper LCD Power Supply Page 8 An interesting repair on an IGT Party Time upper LCD power supply. The upper LCD is also referred to an MCB2, power supply part number , model YM-6151A. The unit has a standard C14 IEC power plug input of 120 Vac (see illustration on the various types of IEC-International Electrotechnical Committee-power connectors. Let s refer to them by their proper designation) with outputs of 5Vdc, 3.3Vdc, and 12Vdc. After the usual process of capping it (on an older unit I replace the majority, if not all, capacitors) and replacing the dead 5 volt DC cooling fan, I knew I had some output DC voltage. When applying power to the unit, the cooling fan spun. I did notice it spun quietly but didn t think a whole lot about it at the time. Next, the unit was tagged ready for test to make sure it works in a game. What the...? It ended up back on the repair shelf with a tag doesn t power up LCD but fan spins. What in the world is going on with this? A few more caps that were very difficult to get to were replaced, this time I tested with a multi-meter, like I should have the first time, NOT assuming I had all of my output voltages only because the fan spun. Unusual readings appeared such as 985 millivolts DC. Other components were checked too, like the junction drop on transistor; they all tested fine. Nothing obvious looked bad on the board. I had to ask for help as to why this unit was not working properly. After talking to a co-worker, they showed me an additional ground connection that needed to be made. On the large Molex connector the green wire needs to have a jumper wire to earth ground. On our bench there is a pin that sticks out near an 120 Vac outlet that is used. Sure enough, once the connection was made I had all of the output voltages I was looking for, along with a fast cooling fan speed. Previously, it must have had just enough voltage to spin the fan at a slow speed and I should have replaced all the caps I could the first time I had it apart.

WMS Progressive Dis- abled Error I was told when I came in for my shift, that there was a WMS BB2 game down. When turning the game power ON, the voltage LEDs on the back plane board (the power supply indicators) were all lit up OK but the ones located on the inside of the CPU board were flashing. They are supposed to remain illuminated. It was almost like something was shorting out the board. Maybe the power supply was bad? It was replaced only to have the failure remain the same. Editor s Note: For system troubleshooting, nothing beats the peace of mind that comes through swaptronics. You can brag all you want about what a great technician you are and how you can use a digital multi-meter and/or oscilloscope to ferret out all sorts of problems (and if you really CAN, I am superhappy for you. It s a real joy to possess this skill set. I really admire our industry s super technicians who are, by-and-large, remarkably humble-a rarity among technicians, in my experience-and more than willing to help others through the Slot Tech Forum or here in the pages of Slot Tech Magazine) but regardless, it would be foolish to not take advantage of the sure-fire diagnostic technique of sub-assembly replacement. I mention this because I am as interested in the troubleshooting process as I am the actual repair. What led you to the cause of the problem? I specifically ask my contributors to discuss the things that they tried but didn t fix the problem. Following a troubleshooting path doesn t mean that you have failed on your first attempt or any of the subsequent steps you ve taken on the path to discover the failure. Once you have become familiar with the failure, you can bypass troubleshooting completely and jump right to the repair. -rf Looks like possibly a bad CPU board now. After swapping the hard drive, jurisdiction chip, BIOS, OS card, game card, and license dongle, the replacement board booted up the game. Following a RAM clear and set up, there was a progressive error that I could not clear. On the game there are three progressives: Grand, Major, and Minor. As I later found out, the Grand is a linked progressive while the other two are stand alone. This explained why I had unavailable showing on the game side of the Grand progressive software set- Page 9

tings. A co-worker checked game settings and such, then came up with the solution to the problem, which made perfect sense. Since the game CPU board was replaced, it had a different MAC address than the original, therefore it could not talk to the progressive controller until it had the replacement MAC entered into it. After the MAC was keyed in and everything matched, the progressive error cleared and the amount appeared correctly on the top LCD. What is a MAC address and what is its definition? Media Access Control address of a device is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communication. In other words it s an alpha numeric number that identifies hardware to a network computer or controller. We have a similar problem when games are moved or converted. On our Oasis 360 system, if a Sentinel isn t taken offline before 4 am, one of the failures are a game will have PBT error and promo cash won t download. Someone from accounting or an experienced tech needs to go into the Black Bart program and click on the reset mac id tab located on the bottom part of the screen. I ve had accounting do this for me a few times. Within a couple minutes, the game accepted promo cash perfectly. This was all because the system had the mac Page 10 address tied to the old location or old machine number. Once matched, everything is fine and can communicate properly. Konami Both Screens Were Black I was called to a Konami Podium KP3 that had no exterior lighting and both the upper and lower screens were black. I told the slot attendant to try rebooting the game. Within the hour, a call came again for the same problem. Without looking at the game first, I had brought a spare main power supply with me. I was correct. No power to both LCDs and no exterior lights indicate a bad main power supply (which is located on the lower right hand side of the game and very easy to replace with only one thumb screw). After it was replaced, the game was fine. With my experience working on these power supplies, Sometimes only replacing a large domed capacitor along with a board mounted fuse fixes these ones. Capacitor is 420 v 270 uf fuse is ceramic type 6.3 amps. Konami power supply part number is 45277, the model number is VA SG Twin Star Freezing Up After an Hour and a Half We had a Scientific Games Twin Star machine that would only last about an hour and a half until the game would freeze up. Again and again after the hour it would freeze. Usually, when memory errors or freezing up happens on these games, a factory reset (full RAM Clear) needs to be preformed, then it is fine. I was told a factory reset was already done on it so now what? A field tech from the company was scheduled to arrive so I waited to ask what they would do. I was told a factory reset should do the trick, if not, perhaps the brain box was failing. When talking to a co-worker, they stated a reset may not have been done. So a reset was

done on it, the OS, game software, and such were reloaded into the brain box via thumb drives. Options were set accordingly, then it was time for the test. It accepted promo cash and tickets, then it was a waiting game. Would it stay running for more than an hour and a half? Sure enough it did. On a different day a Twin Star on the opposite side of the bank didn t have any sound. Software options were checked, connections were checked, nothing looked loose or unplugged. Maybe a reboot will fix it? A power cycle of the game was done, during the boot up process it had an infamous WMS beeping door open sound so I was quite sure the game sound would work now. Once it was complete, I touched the volume icon located on the button panel. It did in fact work, the game now had sound. Aristocrat Double Arc Buffalo (large curved game) The Arc and Double Arc are two of Aristocrat s newer models. Programs I ve seen in them are Buffalo. Walking Dead and Brittney. The Double Arc is hard to miss on the floor. Two large curved LCDs, one on top of the other, not quite as large as the Aristocrat Goliath but no doubt a second place. Anyway, I was called to a Buffalo Arc WAP game (wide area progressive) that displayed progressive level mismatch on it. Naturally, the customer was in the middle of a bonus at the time so the repair needed to be quick. The first time I had worked on the game, it had to be rebooted a couple of times which took some time, CAT 5 connections were checked and so on. Finally the error cleared. The second time I ran into it, main game power was turned off then main game input power was disconnected for about 30 seconds. Power was re-connected, game power turned back ON, then wait for it to fully boot up. The error cleared and the customer continued their bonus play. Editor s note: FM repair?- rf IGT G20 Wrong Asset Number Error When Downloading Promo Cash I had an IGT G20 that had a wrong asset number error when trying to download promo cash during a test procedure after a game conversion. In other words, a game was converted to a different theme therefore paperwork and testing needs to be completed to make sure everything works as it should, such as accepting promo cash, accepting bills, print and accept tickets, correct points are accumulated on the promo cash test card and so on. When the wrong asset number error appeared on the Oasis n- Compass display I knew it had to do with the machine house number. Which side though? Was it a game option or an Oasis option that was incorrect? In game options, I found out the area in which the game house number and game serial number were supposed to be entered had been accidentally left blank. Once the numbers were entered in, the game accepted promo cash perfectly. Also after a conversion, sometimes an SAS timeout error or general error will appear on the Oasis display. Simply rebooting the game along the the n-compass unit usually clears these errors, as long as there is good game and system communication, and of course when the game is in a total idle state. None of the doors are showing open, paper isn t low, and such. - Pat Porath pporath@slot-techs.com Page 11

Slot Tech Feature Article Wilder Things #1 By Wilder Contreras Randy, I have been reading your magazine both online and in print for a while now and have always enjoyed seeing what other people have been doing all over. Here is a quick tip for repairing most plastics. I have been using this for a while. It s not really my own idea but I picked it up from model making. Two basic supplies: cyanoacrylate (Krazy Glue) and baking soda. The way it works is you get the broken pieces, join them together and you use a small amount of the glue. While still wet, you sprinkle the baking soda all over. You will see the baking soda absorb the glue. You can keep sprinkling until it stops absorbing, then you can keep repeating the glue and baking soda in small layers at a time. That way, it has time to dry better. If you use too much glue, it will just get really messy and will not work. I usually place a piece of paper under the project and when I m done, I put the baking soda that has spilled everywhere back into my container. After it dries, the plastic can be sanded and even painted if needed. Let me know if this is the kind of stuff you are needing or if you have already used this tip and I have just missed it. I m not sure how all this publishing thing works. Thank You, Wilder Contreras Hollywood Gaming Page 15

VLT Technician 777 Hollywood Blvd. Dayton, OH Editor s Note: You bet this is the kind of stuff we need in! Thanks for the contribution. The way this publishing thing works is just what you did here. You sent nice little tip, illustrated with really great photographs. Next step, I pay you! From Wikipedia: When added to baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), cyanoacrylate glue forms a hard, lightweight adhesive filler (baking soda is first used to fill a gap then the adhesive is dropped onto the baking soda). This works well with porous materials that the glue does not work well with alone. This method is sometimes used by aircraft modelers to assemble or repair polystyrene foam parts. It is also used to repair small nicks in the leading edge of composite propeller blades on light aircraft. The reaction between cyanoacrylate and baking soda is very exothermic (heat-producing) and also produces noxious vapors. A monomer, such as methylcyanoacrylate (the substance in super glue), with two electron - withdrawing substituents can be polymerized with very mild nucleophiles such as Br, CN, amines or OH. The monomer polymerizes Page 16 on contact with many surfaces. Most often it is initialized by the presence of water (the OH ions from water).if you have sodium bicarbonte present, traces of water (from the surface or air) will react and make NaOH. The reaction is the following:nahco3 + H2O > NaOH + H2CO3NaOH is a very good starter of the polymerization reaction. It will make the reaction go very fast. This is an exothermic reaction.

The repair information and technical data contained in past issues is just as valid today as it was the day it was published. Additionally, current and future articles more-or-less assume that readers are already familiar with what has been covered in past issues. This editorial policy assures that Slot Tech Magazine's contributing writers are not limited to "writing down" to the level of a novice technician but are free to continue to produce the most comprehensive technical articles in the gaming industry.
