CHAPTER 1 CAUTIONS IN HANDLING 1-1 Working environment Wiring and noise countermeasures Warming-up...1-3

CHAPTER 1 Cautions in handling Working environment WARNING Although this sensor uses a red LED as the beam source, do not directly see the beam emitted from the sensor head, since it has been focused and has high optical intensity. 2. Never disassemble the products. 3. Make sure to carry out the wiring in the power supply OFF condition. CAUTION 4. Operate the products within an ambient temperature of 0 to +45 (sensor head), 0 to +50 (controller). Storage can be at an ambient temperature of -20 to Operate the products within 35 to 85% RH humidity. Further, do not use the product under conditions where condensation may occur due to drastic temperature variation.

CHAPTER 1 Cautions in handling CAUTION Ambient illuminance with incandescent light should be 3,000lx or less for LH-54 / 58 and 2,500lx or less for LH-512. Do not allow any water, oil, fingerprints etc., which may refract light, or dust dirt, etc., which may block light, to stick to the emitting/receiving surfaces of the sensor head. In case they are present, wipe them with a clean, soft cloth or lens paper. Take care that extraneous light, such as sunlight or light having the same wavelength, does not fall on the receiving part of the sensor head. Especially for accurate measurements, install a shield, etc., to block extraneous light. Take care that in case the measured object has a highly reflective surface or is transparent, accurate measurement may not be possible. Although the sensor has IP67 protection, measurement in water or rain is not possible. Further, the connector part is not water-proof. Avoid dust, dirt, and steam. Besides, avoid use at places subject to intense vibrations or shock. Take care that the sensor head does not come in direct contact with water, oil, grease, or organic solvents, such as thinner, etc. Verify that the power supply voltage variation is within the rating. If power is supplied from a commercial switching regulator, ensure that the frame ground (F.G.) terminal of the power supply is connected to an actual ground. If the controller is used for a long time, although it becomes hot, this does not indicate any abnormality. However, if the controller is used by being enclosed in a control box, make sure to provide proper ventilation.

CHAPTER 1 Cautions in handling 1-2 Wiring and noise countermeasures CAUTION 1. In case noise generating equipment (switching regulator, inverter motor, etc. ) is used in the vicinity of this product, connect the frame ground (F.G.) terminal of the equipment to an actual ground. The analog output and alarm output are not incorporated with a short-circuit protection circuit. Do not connect them directly to a power supply or a capacitive load. The controller cable can be extended up to total 50m with a 0.22mm², or more, cable. However, use a 0.15mm² shield wire for the analog output cable extension. Do not run the wires together with high-voltage lines or power lines or put them in the same raceway. This can cause malfunction due to induction. 1-3 Warming-up NOTE Take care that after switching on the power supply, there is a muting time of 5 sec. Use this product 10 min. after the power is supplied. Immediately on supply of power, the electrical circuit is yet to stabilize, which may cause variation in measured values.

CHAPTER 3 Mounting and Connection 3-1 Mounting Sensor head Setting method Adjust the distance between the sensor head and the measured object to be within the measuring range, by checking the operation indicator. Further, adjusting the reference position (center of displacement) of the measured object near the center measuring distance (LH-54: 40mm, LH-58: 80mm, LH-512: 120mm) results in stable measurement. Off Outside measuring range Lights up in orange Lights up in green Center Lights up in orange Within measuring range Off Outside measuring range Install the sensor head, such that the surface of the measured object is parallel to the sensing face of the sensor head. Use the two mounting holes and fix the sensor head firmly. However, note that the tightening torque should be 0.5Nm or less. Since the emitting/receiving surfaces of the sensor head use glass, take care that they are not subject to direct shock. Further, do not allow any water, oil, fingerprints, etc., which may refract light, or dust, dirt, etc., which may block light, to stick to the emitting/receiving surfaces of the sensor head. In case they are present, wipe them with a clean, soft cloth or lens paper. If the light reflected from the measured object is reflected once again from the surrounding objects and is received by the sensor head, the measurement is affected. Install the sensor head away from such objects or color them with non-glossy black paint so that reflected light is not received from the surroundings. Direction of mounting In case the measured object is moving as shown below, take care of the mounting direction of the sensor head, as an error may be generated depending on the mounting direction. Eccentricity measurement Level difference measurement In case of extreme change in color or material at a boundary

In case the measured object is outside the measuring range and is very close to the sensor head, the measured value may be displayed, instead of NEAR or BRIGHT indication. Please ensure to set the object to be measured within the measuring range. Measurement value may be unstable near the boundaries of the measuring range. Please ensure to correctly set the object to be measured within the measuring range.

Panel lock setting CHAPTER 6 SettingOperation Setting the panel lock setting to ON enables the sensor to be put in a state in which operation with the mode selection switch and jog switch is not effective, unless the setting is cancelled. Initial setting: OFF Setting procedure Select mode selection switch to RUN SET Measurement value display MODE RUN 3 sec. or more Set Panel lock to OFF Enter Set Panel lock to ON NOTE Panel lock is maintained even if the power is switched OFF. Panel lock set/cancel is selectable only when the mode selection switch is on RUN. ing the jog switch at the end of the setting conforms the setting, which is written into an EEPROM. If the setting is to be cancelled before confirmation, slide the mode selection switch to another position.

CHAPTER SettingOperation MODE Set the mode selection switch to MODE. SET RUN MODE Shift adjustment setting In case the relation between displacement amount and output is desired to be calibrated, shift adjustment is possible. By shift adjustment, the relation between the distance from the sensor head to the measured object and the measured value or the analog output value can be shifted vertically within 10% of full scale. Example: LH-54 Measurement value display Change of 5mm Measurement value display 40mm Analog voltage: 0V Analog current: 12mA 35mm Analog voltage: -2.5V Analog current: 8mA If change from to is desired Measurement value display Analog voltage: -2V Analog current: 8.8mA Change by +1mm with shift adjustment (Please refer to page 6-7 Setting procedure.) Features of shift adjustment setting Relation between displacement amount and output can be adjusted within10% of full-scale (1.0V approx. for analog voltage output and 1.6m approx. for analog current output). Analog output shift adjustment is for, both, current output and voltage output. This setting acts on, both, measurement value display and analog output. If the set values exceed the upper/lower limit of the analog output, they are held at at upper/lower limit of full-scale. Further, the measurement value display is also held at the upper/lower value of full-scale. Initial setting: OFF (zero shift) REFERENCE This function can be used together with 0-ADJ setting. Please refer to page ADJ for details.

In case the set value is to be decreased, turn the jog switch a little to the - side to decrease the set value slowly. If the jog switch is turned fully to the - side, the set value decreases rapidly. Enter Shift value is set. NOTE ing the jog switch at the end of the setting confirms the setting, which is written into an EEPROM. If the setting is to be cancelled before confirmation, slide the mode selection switch to another position.

Span adjustment setting CHAPTER 6 SettingOperation In case the relation between displacement amount and output is desired to be calibrated, span adjustment is possible. By span adjustment, the output span (slope) of the measurement value or analog output versus the distance from the sensor head to the measured object can be adjusted within 10% of full scale. Example: LH-54 Change of 5mm Measurement value display Measurement value display 40mm 35mm If change from to is desired. Measurement value display Change by mm with span adjustment. (Please refer to page 6-10 Setting procedure for details.) Features of span adjustment setting The span (slope) of the output versus the displacement can be adjusted within 10% of full scale (10V approx. for analog voltage output and 1.6m approx. for analog current output). Analog output span adjustment is for, both, current output and voltage output. This setting acts on, both, measurement value display and analog output. If the set values exceed the upper/lower limit of the analog output, they are held at the upper/lower limit of full-scale. Further, the measurement value display is also held at the upper/lower value of full-scale. Initial setting: OFF (Span amount 1) REFERENCE This function can be used together with 0-ADJ setting. Please refer to page ADJ for details.

NOTE ing the jog switch at the end of the setting confirms the setting, which is written into an EEPROM. If the setting is to be cancelled before confirmation, slide the mode selection switch to another position.

CHAPTER SettingOperation Comparative output threshold value setting The comparison result is output, based on the set threshold values. Two independent outputs (OUT 1 & OUT 2) are available. For each output, threshold values and output operation can be set. There are two types of output operation, NEAR ON and FAR ON. Further, the timing to judge the comparative output can be specified by an external synchronization input. The following explains the setting procedure for output operation and threshold value. OUT 1 : FAR ON OUT 2NEAR ON Comparative output OUT 1 OUT 2 Hysteresis Hysteresis: 0.15%F.S. In case the threshold value is to be decreased, turn the jog switch a little to the - side to decrease the threshold value slowly. If the jog switch is turned fully to the - side, the threshold value decreases rapidly. Enter The display blinks thrice, and then the threshold value is set. NOTE ing the jog switch at the end of the setting confirms the setting, which is written into an EEPROM. If the setting is to be cancelled before confirmation, slide the mode selection switch to another position.

CHAPTER SettingOperation Comparative output timer setting This function sets a timer for the comparative output or alarm output. ON-delay timer, which is useful when sensing only objects with a long passage time, and OFF-delay timer, which is useful when the sensor is connected to devices having a slow response time, etc., are incorporated. The timer period can be selected from four values: 40ms, 100ms, 200ms or 500ms. ON-delay timer OFF-delay timer Without timer : Neglects short detection signals. : Extends the output signal by a fixed time interval. : Timer is not used. Initial setting : Without timer Sensing condition Sensing Not sensing ON Without timer OFF ON-delay T ON OFF OFF-delay T T T ON OFF NOTE The timer setting is common for comparative outputs, OUT 1, OUT 2 and alarm output.

CHAPTER 6 SettingOperation Setting procedure Set the mode selection switch to MODE. Turn the jog switch towards the + or the - side to display the comparative output timer setting. (Please refer to page Configuration for the operation procedure until now.) Select Without timer, ON-delay or OFF-delay by turning the jog switch towards the + side or the - side. Without timer Enter Without timer is set. Set the timer interval to 40, 100, 200 or 500ms by turning the jog switch towards the + side or the - side. ON-delay 40ms 100ms OFF-delay 200ms 500ms Enter Selected timer interval is entered. NOTE ing the jog switch at the end of the setting confirms the setting, which is written into an EEPROM. If the setting is to be cancelled before confirmation, slide the mode selection switch to another position.

CHAPTER SettingOperation Gain setting Gain setting is the setting of the receiving light sensitivity of the sensor head. This product calculates the measurement value by the reflected light from the measured object. Therefore, it is necessary to set the receiving light sensitivity of the sensor head suitably to account for any changes in the received light due to the reflectivity of the object s surface. Gain setting can be selected from two types, AUTO setting or SELECT setting. AUTO : Gain is automatically changed according to the change in the reflectivity (received light) of the measured object. (Note 1) SELECT: Receiving light sensitivity can be selected from 11 settings according to the measured object. Further, the optimum gain can be confirmed by checking the LED indications of BRIGHT, GOOD, or DARK (see the diagram below). Set the gain so that GOOD 3 is displayed. (Note 2) DARK state GOOD 1 GOOD 2 GOOD 3 BRIGHT state BRI. GOOD DAR. BRI. GOOD DAR. BRI. GOOD DAR. BRI. GOOD DAR. BRI. GOOD DAR. Light intensity : Low Optimum state Light intensity : High During SELECT setting, if the measured object is outside the measuring range, the following display appears. In this case, set the measured object within the measuring range. If the measured object is outside the near side of the measuring range (NEAR) BRI. GOOD DAR. If the measured object is outside the far side of the measuring range (FAR) BRI. GOOD DAR. Initial setting : SELECT setting 04 NOTE 1) In the auto setting, the linearity and resolution may deteriorate. 2) Depending on the reflection ratio or gloss of the measured object, it is possible that GOOD 3 state does not change even if the gain is changed. In that case, set the gain at one level lower than the highest gain for GOOD 3. Because of the same reason mentioned above, it is possible that GOOD 3 does not light up. In that case, set the gain at the highest gain for GOOD 2.

CHAPTER 6 SettingOperation Setting procedure Set the mode selection switch to MODE. Turn the jog switch towards the + or the - side to display the gain setting. (Please refer to page Configuration for the operation procedure until now.) Select AUTO setting or SELECT setting by turning the jog switch towards the + side or the - side. Depending on the gain setting, the three digits on the right indicate either BRIGHT, DARK, or GOOD. SELECT setting Select the sensitivity from 1 to 11 by turning the jog switch towards the + side or the - side. Selected gain is entered. Enter Auto setting is entered. AUTO setting Enter NOTE ing the jog switch at the end of the setting confirms the setting, which is written into an EEPROM. If the setting is to be cancelled before confirmation, slide the mode selection switch to another position.

CHAPTER SettingOperation Response time setting This function changes the response time. The response time can be selected from eight values : 0.5, 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 100 or 300ms. The resolution changes depending upon the selected response time. Hence, set the required response time taking the resolution into consideration. For measuring the displacement accurately : Set to slow response time. (High resolution) For fast response : Set to fast response time. (Low resolution) Initial setting : 300ms Setting procedure Set the mode selection switch to MODE. Turn the jog switch towards the + or the - side to display the response time setting. (Please refer to page Configuration for the operation procedure until now.) Select the response time as 0.5, 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 100 or 300ms by turning the jog switch towards the + side or the - side. The response time is entered. Enter NOTE ing the jog switch at the end of the setting confirms the setting, which is written into an EEPROM. If the setting is to be cancelled before confirmation, slide the mode selection switch to another position.
