4 Summer Reading Activity Page 4 Pre-AP English II-Mrs. Schell Choose ONE of the books listed below. Read that novel and answer as many of these questions as you can. This document will be considered a work in progress that we will continue to amend as we learn more of these ideas in class. -Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan {This novel focuses on the lives of four Chinese American immigrant families. It is told from the perspectives of four daughters and three mothers (one mother dies before the novel begins). Each person tells her story in the form of a vignette.} -Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya {This novel is about a young boy, Antonio Márez y Luna, who tells the story of his coming-of-age with the guidance of his mentor and protector, Ultima.} -Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston {This novel follows its protagonist, Janie Crawford, as she grows from a vibrant and voiceless teenager to a woman in charge of her own life. -The Chosen by Chaim Potok {This novel focuses on the lives of two Jewish families and the struggles that they encounter on a daily basis in Brooklyn, NY. The story is told mostly through the lives of two young boys and how their lives intertwine, even though they are practicing Jews of different sects.} Answer as many of the following questions as you can and bring those with you to class. We will discuss these ideas and allow time for revision during the first three weeks. You will complete a project on your book in which you will address the following: 1. What is the overall tone of the work? Provide at least three quotes that support this identification. 2. Write at least two theme statements about the work. What biographical information contributes to the understanding of the novel? 5. What historical information contributes to the understanding of the work? 6. Which character most affects you? Why? How? 7. Choose one significant scene in the work. Analyze, line by line, what the author does to make it memorable. 8. Tell something about the story that you think is significant but has not been asked. 9.Why did you choose this work? 10. Research information about the author. Why did they write this book? I d be on my cell have to use a lake for landing. If he went phone, freaking out & he s trying down into the trees he was certain to die. land the plane! I guess it s important to keep your cool in a crisis. (Reaction to text) Now, with the thought of the burger, the p.48 It s weird how Brian s stomach emptiness roared at him. He could not is like a character now, driving believe the hunger, had never felt this his behavior. I ve been hungry before, way. The lake water had filled his stomach, but never like that. Is he going to but left it hungry, and not it demanded food, start eating things that are poison screamed for food., because he is so hungry? 6 Inadequate Sample Dialectical Journal Entries (Quotes and Notes) Page 6 Student Name: Bea Smart Book Book Title/Author: Hatchet, Gary Paulsen Date: July 2014 Total pages: 195 (Quotes) From Text pg. # (Notes) From Me It kept coming back to that. He had nothing. I know how that feels. I have nothing too. (No page number indicated.) (This connection is rather shallow. It needs more elaboration.) Things wer bad, he thout, but maybe not that bad. (This text excerpt has 2 mis-spellings and does not include a page number.) I feel that way sometimes too. (Again, this connection does not appear to have any thought behind it, just a hasty response to complete the task.) Journals with less than 10 entries are not considered exemplary. An Inadequate Double Entry Journal Contains: Fewer than 10 entries from the book. Quotations from the text contain many mis-spelled words. From Text entries indicate the entire book may not have been read. From Me entries demonstrate incomplete thoughts or connections and seem hastily written. Entries lack elaboration.
