1 APA 6 th Edition Reference Guide Citing your sources on the References Page The Reference List begins on a new page, at the end of the paper. Double-space all your text, including reference entries. References are listed alphabetically by the first author s last name or whatever is given as the first piece of information in the reference. If you have more than one reference with the same first author listed, then the items are listed by publication year in ascending order. In other words, older publications come before recent publications. Check If the reference is longer than one line, the following lines are indented ½ inch or 5 spaces. Authors first names and middle names are given as initials only. If a work has no author, title is in the author position, before date of publication. Titles are italicized. For periodical articles, only the title of the periodical is italicized, not the title of the article. Every attempt should be made to check the database for the DOI * of articles cited. However, there might be no DOI assigned to each reference. If there is no DOI assigned and the article is from an online journal, include the URL for the article after the phrase Retrieved from (even from Library databases) For more information, see pages of the APA Manual, on reserve. Basic Formulas (note the punctuation!) Book Last name, First names initials. (Year). Book title. City of Publication, State/Province/Country of Publication: Publisher. Article Last name, First names initials. (Year). Article title. Periodical title volume# (issue#), pp. page#-page#. doi:xx.xxxxxxxxxx * Document Object Identifier (DOI) is the system for identifying objects in the digital environment, commonly used as persistent identification of an intellectual content in databases.
