1 DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT): A Bibliometric Study ( ) Sushma H R Research Scholar, Bangalore University Bangalore, India sushmahrmlis@gmail.com Abstract DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT) is more than three decades old journal, published in the field of Library and Information Science, a bimonthly basis, by Defence Science Documentation Centre, New Delhi, India. The journal is enjoying wide readership both at national and international level. The present Bibliometric study was carried on 294 scholarly research articles published in DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology, during the period The present analysis is mostly confined to examine article distribution pattern of the journal articles, authorship pattern, and geographical distribution of authors and citation analysis of the references attached to the papers. A maximum number of articles (65) were published in On average 9.8 articles were published in the journal in each issue during the period of investigation. A maximum number of contributions are joint collaborations with 191 (64.96 %) articles. A maximum of 133 articles contributed in the journal are on two author pattern, followed by 103 articles as single-authored. Most of the 85 %contributions are from India, 15 % contributions are from abroad and collaboration. The study revealed that majority of the authors preferred journals as the source of information providing the highest number of citations. Dr. BM Gupta has published the maximum number of articles (11) in the Journal during the period under study. The maximum number of articles (70.07 %) has the length of6-10 pages. Maximum numbers of special issues (5) were published in 2012.On average 16.5 references were cited by each article during the period of investigation with total references Keywords: Bibliometric study, DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology, SIB, DRDO, DJLIT, Citations 1. INTRODUCTION ThePresent study is confined to DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT), one of the leading Library and Information Science journals in India, over three decades old journal, being published by Defence Science Documentation Centre (DESIDOC), DRDO, GOI, New Delhi since 1981 on bimonthly basis, each volume having six issues. Researchers of the given science all over the world equally prefer to publish their research results in a said journal. Primarily DESIDOC used to be known as Scientific Information Bureau (SIB) and it started functioning in the year 1958 as a constituent of Defence Science Laboratory (DSL), presently known as Defence Science Centre. In the year 1967, the scope of SIB got expanded and accordingly got renamed as DESIDOC and is presently housed in five storied building in the Metcalfe house complex, New Delhi, India. The user can access the journal at Users 718

2 can also log in and submit their articles and view the status of their articles from time to time. The journal uses online reviewing process and the full-text of all the issues starting from the first issue in 1981 is available on the site mentioned (2016) [1]. In order to understand the latest trend and pattern of publication distribution in the field of library and Information Science in India, it was conceived to undertake the bibliometric study on one of the leading and consistent journals of LIS in India and accordingly DJLIT was chosen for the purpose and the present study remains confined to last five years for the period Apart from assessing research output of the journal during the last five years, the aim was also to analyze the authorship pattern, publication pattern, geographical distribution of authors, and reference analysis. During the period of analysis the journal has covered most of the professional areas and aspects of LIS, with a good number of issues dedicated to topics like, Agricultural Information Systems and Services in India, Scientometrics, bibliometric study, E-Books, Intellectual Property Rights: Patents & Copyright, Open Source Software for Libraries, Digital Preservation, Online Exhibitions, Knowledge Organisation, Embedded Librarianship, Semantic Web and so on. Publishing guest editorial in almost every issue of the journal has been the regular feature of the journal. The current study has been undertaken with the sole motto to assess and understand the research output published in DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT) during the by employing bibliometric techniques. DJLIT is a peer-reviewed journal, indexed in Library and Information Science Abstract (LISA), Library and Information Science Technology Abstracts (LISTA), Indian Citation Index (ICI), Indian Science Abstracts (ISA) etc. Related Literature: Assessment and quantitative evaluation of research output of scholarly content at regular intervals of times is equally an important activity as the research carried out in a discipline itself. Already a good number of bibliometric studies have been carried out on DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology. The present bibliometric study is an extension of the earlier studies on DESIDOCJournal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT) undertaken by Tigga et al. (2005) and Bansal, et al. (2005) these studies were confined to content analysis of DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology, Kumar & Moorthy (2011) spanning over the period , Thavamani (2013) spanning over the period , Bansal (2013) spanning over the period , Pandita (2014) spanning over the period ( ), Desai (2014) study was confined to the year 2012, Teli & Maity (2015) study was confined to the citation analysis, Pandita, (2013) in their bibliometric analysis analysed 310 articles published in Annals of Library and Information Studies (ALIS) Journal during the period , Rajev & Joseph (2016) analysed articles published in the Malaysian journal of library and information science (MJLIS) for the period of 2007 to 2013 in their bibliometric study and Manthiramoorthi & Thamaraiselvi (2016) analyzes a bibliometric study of 53 articles was published in the national conference proceedings, etc. are just a few studies to name which have exclusively been undertaken on DJLIT. There were some other areas which were not explored in these studies as such the study was undertaken. 2. OBJECTIVES Following are the objectives of the study: To analyze the number of contributions and the pattern of growth of articles published in the journal spanning over the period ; 719

3 To assess the pattern of authorship; To examine the geographical distribution of articles (Indian/Foreign); To identify the most prolific authors; To study the special issues published; To examine the length of articles published; To study institute-wise distribution of papers; To identify the type of cited documents and their number and To determine an average number of references per article. 3. METHODOLOGY Data and Methodology: The present study is more or less a case of data mining; the data required for analysis, keeping in view the above-mentioned objectives were retrieved from the host website of the journal, accessible at ojs/index.php/djlit/issue/archive. Accordingly, a fair amount of related literature was reviewed so as to have a better idea and understanding of various bibliometric studies already undertaken in different subject fields. Articles published in DJLIT journal during the period (volume 31to volume 35) were extracted, reviewed & put to analysis as per the objectives of the study. The data consists of a year of publication with its volume number, the name of the author with their affiliations and its geographical location, the total count of authors, length of the articles in terms of the number of pages, number of references cited by the article. Editorial published in the journal has not been included in the analysis. The data retrieved was put into excel format so as to achieve the set objectives. Complete count method has been followed for the analysis of the data. 4. ANALYSIS Keeping in view the nature of data and the type of analysis to be carried out, there was no need to hire the expert services. In the present study, the data was simply put to excel format for executing simple operations like addition, subtraction, drawing percentage etc. at all the places percentage has been drawn up to two maximum decimal places and has also been rounded off at some places to next higher percentile value. 4.1 Article Distribution Pattern according to years Table 1 presents the data on the number of papers published during It indicates that 294 articles were published in 30 issues during Thus, on average 58.8 articles were published per year. On average 9.80 articles were published in each issue of the journal. Since the journal is being published on a bi-monthly basis. A maximum number (65) of articles were published in volume 32 (2012) and minimum number (53) of articles were from volume 35(2015). This indicates the increasing importance of the journal among the LIS professional community. The overall distribution of publication percentage is depicted in below-mentioned pie diagram. 720

10 5. CONCLUSION The popularity of the adaptation of bibliometric techniques in various disciplines stimulated the stupendous growth of literature on bibliometrics and its related areas. DJLIT has published 294 articles during The maximum number of articles (65) was published in There has been significant growth in the number of articles published from 2011 to The study reveals that the maximum number of contributors 191(64.96 %) are joint authored (two or more authors). Dr. BM Gupta has published a maximum number of articles (11) in the journal and has been the Guest Editor (along with Dr. GanganPrathap) of a special issue on Scientometrics and another special issue on Indian Contribution in Scientometrics. The maximum number of contributions 206 (70.07%) had the length of 6-10 pages which is standard practice for the journal of research articles. Referencing pattern of the journal reveals that majority of the authors preferred journals as the source of citation. Out of 4857 references sourced by the authors, 2221 were quoted from the journals. Thirty issues brought out during the period included 16 special issues from eminent LIS professionals. Authors from universities (243) and government research institutes (48) were the main contributors. As discussed in our review part and has once again emerged that it is the host country which mostly enjoys the maximum contribution in many ways. The present investigation again proved that since India is the host country of the journal as such more than 85 % published by the journal during the period of investigation is from India and only 15% contributions are from abroad and collaboration. All the top 24 contributors mentioned above in Table 4 are formed host country. Only three articles published in the journal have no references at all.djlit has been successful in its primary objective of information dissemination in the field of LIS. DJLIT has emerged as a core journal of LIS and a platform for knowledge sharing, especially among the students of LIS. REFERENCES 1. Bansal, Alka. (2013).
