Celebrating the best in national, international and local writing, Aye Write! annually brings national and local speakers to Glasgow s iconic Mitchell Library, allowing audiences to enjoy appearances from big name writers and emerging talent alike s programme features over 200 authors including Gina Miller, Simon Mayo, Louise Minchin, Kamal Ahmed, Paul Mason and Lionel Shriver. This year there s a wonderful mix of authors, illustrators and storytellers, offering something for every age and stage. 4 HURRICANE BOOK CLUB FOR SEASON 4 Shetland Library joins Falkirk Community Trust Libraries, Glasgow Libraries and Orkney Library & Archive for season four of the popular library-run, Twitter-based Hurricane Book Club. The initiative is led by Pan Macmillan and supported by the Scottish Book Trust. This season features three titles specially selected by Picador s Senior Commissioning Editor, Sophie Jonathan: Burial Rites by Hannah Kent, inspired by true events and following the final days of a young woman accused of murder in Iceland in 1829; The End We Start From by Megan Hunter, a haunting but hopeful dystopian vision of a familiar world made dangerous and unstable; The Doll Factory by Elizabeth Macneal, an intoxicating story of art, obsession and possession. Each title has a two-month slot culminating in simultaneous Hurricane Book Club meetings at Shetland Library, Falkirk Library, Orkney Library and the Mitchell, with a live Twitter discussion, so the libraries can interact with each other and any reader, anywhere, can join in too. The meeting dates are Thursday 28 February, Thursday 25 April and Thursday 27 June, all at 6pm. Readers anywhere can follow and participate in the discussion through the dedicated twitter or the hashtag #HurricaneBookClub. You can also follow the individual Join us in the Let s Talk Space each month as we explore our collections and bring out a selection of materials not normally on display for these short, insightful sessions. THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD Monday 25, Wednesday 27 February, pm Thursday 28 February, pm It s Oscars Time! To mark the occasion, we re showcasing from our stacks a selection of books commemorating Tinsel Town s most glittering night of the year. Step back in time with some of the legendary stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood. THE SCHOOL OF NEEDLEWORK AND EMBROIDERY AT THE GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART Monday 18, Wednesday 20 March, pm Thursday 21 March, pm The Glasgow School of Art generated some of the most skilful embroiders in the country at the turn of the last century. Artists like Margaret Macdonald, Jessie Newbery, Jessie M King and Ann Macbeth demonstrated some of the finest embroidery techniques of this period, along with playing their part in contributing to The Glasgow Style. Between the first publication of The Kelmscott Press The Story of the Glittering Plain (1891) and Morris death in 1896, nearly 50 books were printed and published. JAMES MAXTON AND RED CLYDESIDE 6 February 14 March Archives Searchroom, Level 5 A small display telling the story of James Maxton and his fellow Red Clydesiders who left a lasting impact on Glasgow. Display is open during searchroom opening hours: Mon, Wed-Thu 9.00am-5.00pm; Tue 9.00am-8.00pm; Fri-Sat 9.00am-5.00pm. HELLENIC GLASGOW: STORIES OF GREEK AND CYPRIOT MIGRATION Monday 11 February, pm Blythswood Room Limited places, please book on or at Granville Street reception. Part of a project funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, this talk by Nicholas Kyriacou of Scottish Hellenic Society (Glasgow) explores the oral history of Greek and Cypriot migrants to Glasgow from the 1940s through to the present day. GONE TO BLAZES WITH JOHN POWER Wednesday 20 February, pm Moir Dyer Room Inspired by The Glasgow Herald review of the opening of a Lewis concert-hall organ in the New Halls in 1877, John Power traced the 85-year history of this fine instrument until its destruction by fire in October Join him to hear more about this fascinating story. Through their extraordinary family histories, author John McGee will share the untold stories of the men and women who made the greatest Scottish football managers.
