1 LIBRARY NEWS A PUBLICATION OF NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY Volume 5, Issue 11 November 2015 What s New? Library Catalog We are excited to introduce an updated design for our library catalog. Now all of our resources are in one location, making it easy to find just what you re looking for. The new interface features google-like searching and is more userfriendly. You can access ebooks and full-text journal articles directly from the new catalog, place holds, create lists, renew books, listen to audio books or search recommendations for similar items. Give it a try today by clicking on Online Catalog from the library s home page. Online Credit/Debit Card Payments Our new catalog allows patrons to access their account from home and pay their fines at any time through the My Account feature. All you need is your library card number and PIN. Contact the library if you don t know your PIN. Book Display It s that time of year! Cookbooks are currently on display in the front of the library. Featured books in the middle display are books on writing for those participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). 3 Upcoming Programs Beginning Word Computer Classes Tuesday November 17 1:00-4:00 p.m. This free beginning Word class will be taught at the library by a Northeast Community College instructor and will be offered again on December 15. Participants will use Windows 7 and should have a good working knowledge of the computer. Class size is limited, and reservations are required. Contact Judy, Amy or Lisa at or stop by the library s Information Desk to register. 1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION PARTY Saturday December 5 10:00 a.m. Over 50 preschoolers have completed this program. New forms will soon be available, which will make it easier than ever to keep track of books. Reading 1,000 books to your child before kindergarten is a fun and rewarding way to instill an early love of reading! Card Making for Beginners November 7 1:30 p.m. Would you like to make your own greeting cards and gift tags for friends and family? Now you can learn some easy, basic methods used in card making. Sign up at the library s Information Desk or call to take this class. A LITTLE HOUSE CHRISTMAS December 12 10:00 a.m. For children ages Space is limited, and advanced registration is required! Make butter; drink hot spiced cider; eat Johnnycakes and Laura s gingerbread; make button whirligigs, yarn dolls, comb harmonicas and Christmas ornaments; play Cat s Cradle and Little House trivia games; and enjoy Pa s fiddle music. 5 Youth Programs LAPSIT: Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. For infants through age 2 with a caregiver, this program is a fun way to begin library visits and literary experiences. Come learn new rhymes, songs and baby games while listening to stories and meeting other families with young children. (Note: There will be no Lapsit on November 28 and December 5.) STORYTIME: Thursdays at 1:30 p.m., Fridays at 10:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. For children age 3 through grade 2, this is a fun combination of literature including books, songs, Spanish language experiences, storytelling, finger plays, poems, puppets and MORE! Caregivers are encouraged to attend with children. (Note: There will be no Storytime November 26, 27, 28 and December 5.) GOLDEN SOWER BOOK CLUB: Monday, November 30, at 4:00 p.m. This is a special book club just for kids ages 8-12 whose reading selections come from titles nominated for the Golden Sower Award, Nebraska s Children s Choice Literary Award. This month s book is A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd. YOUNG ADULT BOOK GROUP (Y.A.B.G.): Saturday, November 7, at 2:30 p.m. This book club is designed for teens. 7 Monthly Programs NEEDLES, HOOKS & BOOKS: Saturdays, November 14 and 28, at 2:30 p.m. For needle crafters. An informal time to work on projects, share skills, talk about books and meet others with similar interests. LIVE TRIVIA NIGHT AT THE VERANDA: Tuesday, November 10, at 7:00 p.m. The trivia is led by Librarian Quizmasters and takes place at the Veranda at Divots. Teams of 1-4 players are invited to test their knowledge against other teams for a chance to win a $40 gift card to Divots. Live Trivia is free to play and lots of fun! TUESDAY NIGHT BOOK CLUB: November 24 at 6:30 p.m. For Adults. This month s book is The Long Way Home by Louise Penny. WEDNESDAY MORNING BOOK CLUB: November 18 at 10:00 a.m. For Adults. This month s book is Killing Kennedy: The End of Camelot by Bill O Reilly. 20s & 30s BOOK CLUB: November 19 at 6:30 p.m. This month s books are I Am Legend by Richard Matheson and Mr. Penumbra s 24- Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. Not in the Cards by Janet Portiner Ah, the good old days days filled with vinyl records, classic cars, and black and white TV. Most of us have fond memories of those simpler times, but were they really that great? Or do we think of them as the "good old days" because we can t go back? I remember going to the library years ago and browsing the card catalog. Yes, those beautiful pull-out drawers loaded with typed literary delights. Even though I have wonderful memories from way back then, the library s card catalog has officially ended its career and it s definitely for the better! I know there are still some rare book and special collections libraries that maintain paper shelf lists, but most libraries of today provide a wealth of resources through online public access catalogs. As we introduce an updated catalog at Norfolk Public Library this month, I realize that I wouldn t want to be stuck in the good old days of card catalogs, carbon paper, and typewriter ribbons. Library catalogs are now searchable, digitized collections accessible to anyone anywhere. You can easily type in a title, author, or subject and instantly bring up a list of books and electronic resources. We ve come a long way! But if you need a little help navigating our new catalog, there s one resource you can always rely on librarians! 7
