1 A World to Discover at Meadowview LauraMorgan,Principal November22,2013 Volume17Issue12 November Kindergarten News Kindergarten experienced their first lessons in history, learning about the first Thanksgiving. As part of this integrated thematic unit, they learned about the lives of the Wampanoag tribe and of the Pilgrims. This unit will culminate with a feast with each kindergarten class dressed as either the Wampanoag or the Pilgrims. The kindergartners wove placemats and made costumes for their feast. They practiced math by playing a Native American game, Hubbub. At the celebration they will eat foods representing foods from the 1621 harvest feast. This will include pumpkin ice cream that the kindergartners made in class. After making the ice cream, they wrote a paper retelling, in correct sequence, how to make pumpkin ice cream. Over the course of this unit, the kindergartners learned songs and poems that they will share at the feast next week. This unit addressed the following Common Core State Standards for Kindergarten: ReadingActively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding. WritingUse a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose narrative pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book. MathUnderstand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality. Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to number of objects in another group.

5 Reading Corner with Mrs. Knott Have you ever wondered what to read with your child? Need book ideas? Look for a new book idea each month in the World to Discover newsletter. All of these books are found at the Meadowview Library, a local bookstore or at the Grayslake Library. Use these suggestions to help find new titles for your family to read That Is NOT a Good Idea by Mo Willems (picture book) Inspired by the evil villains and innocent damsels of silent movies, Mo Willems tells the tale of a hungry fox who invites a plump goose to dinner. Just like in Willems Pigeon books, there is a refrain that is said over and over by some very dramatic chicks, That is NOT a good idea But what is not a good idea? Can you figure it out before the end? Escape From Mr. Lemoncello s Library by Chris Grabenstein Kyle Keeley is the class clown, popular with most kids, (if not the teachers), and an ardent fan of all games: board games, word games, and particularly video games. His hero, Luigi Lemoncello, the most notorious and creative gamemaker in the world, just so happens to be the genius behind the building of the new town library. Lucky Kyle wins a coveted spot to be one of the first 12 kids in the library for an overnight of fun, food, and lots and lots of games. But when morning comes, the doors remain locked. 6 What Should I Read? We all know that we should be reading to our children, but finding good books to read can be difficult. The Reading Department is trying to make that easier for you by utilizing a website with a free app to help you find books that are great to read out loud to your young children and book recommendations for your independent readers. Ready to start? Follow these steps: 1. On a computer, go to 2. Sign up using an address and login. There are three shelves you can set up: read, currently reading and to-read. You can choose to skip this part and do it later, or start building your shelves now. 3. On the home page, choose the button that says to add friends. Both reading specialists have pages, you just need to type in our addresses knott.michele@d46.org or fornero.laura@d46.org. Once you friend us, you will receive updates of new books we have added to our shelves. Get ideas every time we update 4. Check out our shelves and get some book ideas. We have books ranging from picture books to high school books. 5. After you have books added to your shelves, refer to the recommendations link. Based on your interests, the site puts together a list of other books you may enjoy. How does visiting this website help you? Get ideas of books to read to your children there are picture book and chapter book ideas. Want to know what your middle schooler or high schooler is reading?
