1 Mrs. DiSalvo English 9A English 9 Academic Midterm Exam Study Guide The Multiple Choice Portion of the Midterm Exam is comprised of 185 multiple choice questions. Bring a #2 pencil, as you will shade your answers on the provided scantron. The in-class portion will be comprised of the following parts: Reading Comprehension (40-45 questions). You will be given four reading passages and a series of questions to answer for each of those passages. Literary Terms (approximately questions). Know the literary terms we have discussed this semester and their definitions; be able to apply your knowledge of their definitions to identify examples from texts we have read this semester. You should study the Short Story and Literature Notes we took at the beginning of the year for this portion of the exam. Short Stories (approximately questions). You will answer questions related to the short stories we read this semester. Questions will center around major plot events, identifying literary terms/devices when given examples from the text, and characters. You should study reading quizzes, handouts, and the reading notes we took in class at the end of each short story for this portion of the exam. If you would like to look at a copy of the Short Story Unit Test to study for the midterm, you may ask for a pass to come by room 307 during your study hall. Odyssey (approximately questions). You will answer questions related to the Odyssey. Questions will center around major plot events, identifying literary terms/devices when given examples from the text, and characters. You should study reading quizzes, handouts, the character sheet, and the notes we took in class at the end of each book of the Odyssey for this portion of the exam. Additionally, study the notes you took on Homer s World. Research Unit (approximately questions). You will answer questions related to MLA Format, Works Cited pages, and In-text Citations. You should be able to identify the proper font, spacing, etc. for MLA Format. You will identify the type of source used (book, website, or online database) when given you a Works Cited entry. You should be able to write an in-text citation for a book source, a website, and an online database. Review your notes on Works Cited entries and In-Text Citations. Grammar (approximately 20 questions). You will identify the various parts of speech in the provided sentence examples and/or choose the correct form of a word to complete the sentence. Vocabulary (approximately questions). You will choose the vocabulary word that matches the definition and/or the vocabulary word that best completes the sentence. Only vocabulary from the Sadlier-Oxford workbook Units 1-4 will be on the exam; you do not need to study the vocabulary from the Short Story Unit or from the Odyssey. You may complete the following review for extra credit on the exam. Each completed page is worth 1 point extra credit on the final exam grade.
