When I did go there it was a jumble. Newspapers, cafe Free on-line research facilities eg: Genealogy / Local History If they got rid of those bloody self check in things and got people instead, its so impersonal and cold. Actually, I love our local library. I use it a lot, and like the staff there. There is little else it needs to offer in my opinion. more computors, as there is a high demand for the few they got if I could get in on my scooter of wheelchair Libraries should sell advance bus tickets (FirstWeek, FirstMonth) and be kept provided with supplies of printed bus maps, timetables and posters advising of upcoming changes to services. separate quiet and not quiet areas. An area where you can get a coffee sit in an armchair and browse some books.greater availability of newly released quality novels. 11 As an author myself I would love to give talks and book readings promoted by the library. I'd also like to attend courses. It could work like The Folk House. I personally use the library as much as I possibly can given my ft job and busy life. often I go there because I love being next to loads of books, it's my way to meditate! if there were more choices of books, e.g. poetry, comics (like French libraries) If there was information I needed that I could only access there. I like the quiet of a library but this makes it not suitable for socialising as for me that involves talking and laughing. I love learning about new things so hand picked books designed to trigger interests in new topics - beginners guides, that also have a recommended reading list - maybe work with Bristol Uni to put together. I would go to look at those, but I would prefer the council to fix street lighting and pavements in Clifton Wide selection of e-books in particular! offer borrowing or renting ebooks Better choice of newspapers and magazines Libraries are outside my thinking however through the lives of my children and grandchildren in other parts of the country I see there is a need for a library. More time allotted time to use computer SELECTION OF SHEET MUSIC FOR QUARTETS better diabled parking If the library had the books I wanted. I think libraries are essential for the community who don't have access to wi-fi, study aids & books at home If I had more time! being a cultural hub I have a substantial personal library and habve not used a public library in Bristol for 40+ yrs If it held wide range on information on whats on in Bristol If staff were more welcoming enough staff to cope with numerous enquiries or valuable help If DVDs were free if there was a cafe area for socialising with tables, wifi, dedicated spaces for children to socialise, I think it may be my age group, but we just don't use libraries! We have everything at a touch of a button... this part of the questionaire is not well designed, some parts are not applicable to me therefor data not accurate I don't use libraries!! I think libraries need to showcase what they have e.g. can they last having all the Times Bestsellers etc. and make people aware of what's available? Improve toilet facilities. You have to ask for a key at Bedminster library which is a pain with small kids who don't give you much warning when they need to go! coffee shop or similar i dont use the library If my local library had cafe/bar, drop-in hub for lonely people, had drop-in health advice a dynamic place for all maybe even gigs.. none- i know it is there if I need it but I didn't grow up using a library. I buy books and google for information Any other. It's great as it is! Performance, Information and Intelligence Service (Policy, Strategy and Communications) 11
12 If I had more free time! Better vigilance of users especially those with poor personal hygiene or other antisocial traits none of th reasons are why I dont use the library - never seem to get any time to read Larger stock of fiction. arts events like the j3 event for kids to design bristol offerd more in it's ebook epub selection. Better range of CDs and Audio Books whilst i understand the (old) need for them i just do not use them, so for me they are an exspensive use of resources. if there were community shared facilities for craft eg small machines and ovens together with CAD software if they were more efficient and honest Some of above N/A but no box to tick. I would only like it in leisure centre, etc, if librarians were on hand to help. Access to recent and historical newspaper archives on computers, and more computer terminals for research I now have a kindle and download all my books. A cafe more linux computers that dont require booking or registration I do not use the library facility more popularised information about all these activities which library offers. Many people think that library is only to borrow books later opening times for working adults If they sold alcohol Inspiring architecture I would use it more often if they held books by African &African Caribbean authors, which they don't that is why I dont go so often now. I don't use libraries because I am not a book lover I usually read magazines. Most of the books I read are about Christianity and work related which are not stocked in the Library. more audio books I visit as often as i want I personally use the library as much as I possibly can given my ft job and busy life. often I go there because I love being next to loads of books, it's my way to meditate! None of these, library facilites ok for me, as they are now. I prefer to buy my books. More information on my area Hengrove. Private space for personal conversations. Bristol well endowed with Art Galleries. A faster turn-over of books on the shelves. If it had a coffee shop with food and toilets etc. Job - search online No change needed for me. I find the library as it is now quite fit for purpose. As I live 3 streets away from AV/Lib it is perfect for me. I have COPD so I have to have transport I don't so as often as I would like. Performance, Information and Intelligence Service (Policy, Strategy and Communications) 12
13 Open six days a week not four and half. If the "poetry can" could move back - a must, in a library. If I was a widow, now my time is taken up caring for my husband. If it was less smelly and felt cleaner I would visit the library much more. More books in large print for people with sight problems. With all the technology and help it's not somewhere I need to go. I am not a person who reads a lot. Already use the library often - very happy with it I don't know Open more hours & on Sundays Don't use the library so cannot comment My needs for information and fiction are met in other ways. If I could order books & receive them quickly More IT courses More activities, eg. childrens clubs, gardening or health clubs, crafts. Some quiet times, but also times when activities could take place. Used more by the local community. If your Council did not close the local library. If it had a wider range of newspapers/magazines. If needed reference books would they have any? Q10. Library services that were most important were: Lending books to help people learn about interests. Lending specialist and hard to find books Providing access to a computer (with internet and office programs) Offering printing Community news and notice boards Learning about local history Learning about my local neighbourhood and community Information about evening classes or courses Library services that were least important were: Helping find out about an interest from the internet (e.g. crafts, cookery or fixing a car) Lending films, CD s, Computer games, ebooks. So reference books are important, but so are all the other things I would like to know about, as indicated in the tick list. Ideally it is an intrinsic part of ALL the other council services. Availability of books on site is not so important - I'd be quite happy to wait for them to come from a central point when I ordered them. So a library could be on line with a pick up point for hard materials at a local council information point or delivered to my home. Not a place I would think to go for these services, I used to find out about evening classes, but can do that from the council's website now Quiet corner with sofas Good quality Children's books are vital for less affluent families. Specialist knowledge in genealogy, especially using computer as a performance venue for recent research, I used Colindale (since closed, alas) and Cheltenham libraries, but had no use for Bristol Having toilets (esp. for kids) All of the above are really important, for those who need libraries. Performance, Information and Intelligence Service (Policy, Strategy and Communications) 15
16 Fast, reliable Wi-Fi x 2 (free) Author events and live literature events are very important to me. Re magazines it depends what types. New Scientist, yes. 'Hello'- NO! to be the centre of the community and open all hours Providing human support classic novels(not best modern best sellers), texts, graphic novels, non fiction(cycling maintenance, plumbing etc) and good range of kids books none Help from qualified staff on specialised subjects and methods of study. Providing access to computer family history and newspaper archive services providing a non commercial public place for people to spend time Photocopier Provide an area for clubs - like a community centre DVD watching booths such as at the new Birmingham library. Specialist professional literature. Different spaces for individual / cosy & quiet or group / louder study or meetings Book by African/African Caribbean writers Children activities, tutoring, reading classes like speed reading Availability of books so one can look up information instead of computer. Libraries is a good thing for people, would go there regular. Presence of librarians - personal touch better than machines. Central Library more information on local area. Wheelchair access. Too far geared towards computer use. The Avonmouth staff are always very helpful. Have a chat, cheer me up. More for pensioners to understand computers. Cleaner, newer copies of books, books being replaced more often. Reading should begin at age 2 - no pre-reading activities in library. Access to books in archive Supplying book group books Places for artists and writers to showcase their work. Performance, Information and Intelligence Service (Policy, Strategy and Communications) 16
