4 Photo Anouk Kluyskens Seeing Myself as All the Characters by LeUyen Pham When I was a kid, all I ever wanted to do was read and draw. Seriously, if I didn t have a book in my hands, I had a pencil and paper and was sketching. I always hung out with the school librarian, who would show me all the latest books that were out, or all the classics that I didn t know about. I was a really shy kid and didn t have a lot of friends, but in the world of books I was invincible. I saw myself in all the characters I read and wanted to be just like them. When I was a kid, though, there weren t a whole lot of books about Asian kids. So I would often draw myself as a favorite character instead. Claudia in From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Ramona Quimby, Sheila the Great they all became Asian when I drew them. And of course, I drew myself as Luke Skywalker too, with lightsaber and all. Somehow it made me closer to the characters and the books I so loved. Nowadays we re lucky we have so many books with so many great diverse characters. My sons don t have to go very far to find books with characters who look like them. There are so many stories out there that I don t have to draw myself as the characters anymore, because I can imagine myself as those characters now. And of course, I have the best job in the world I illustrate kids books. So now I spend my days drawing, not just myself but all the kids that I meet in all my books.
