4 HOW TO BRING YOUR STORIES TO LIFE by Rick Riordan Hey, Scholastic Readers! Rick Riordan, author of the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series There s nothing better than getting lost in a great story except maybe getting to make up your own stories. Have you ever thought about writing a story, but you weren t sure how to start or how to finish? Here are a few things I discovered over the years. Maybe they ll help! First, ideas can come from anywhere. Stories can be based on stuff that happened to you or your family or friends. They can come from the news or ancient history. The best ideas are always the ones that make you think, What if? What if the Greek gods were still around in the modern world? What if dragons were real? What if you accidentally invented a time machine? Once you ve got an idea, try to imagine the big scenes you would want to see in the story. How would it start? Where would your characters go? What would they do? What would be the most exciting parts? What would happen at the end? Give yourself a loose road map to follow, sort of like a time line. You don t have to follow it exactly, but if you have some notes, it will help with writer s block. You won t be so likely to get to the middle of the story and get stuck. I don t know if that s ever happened to you, but I have a whole binder full of stories I never finished from when I was a young writer. Next, follow that road map and write the whole story from start to finish. Don t stop! Don t worry about revising! Don t worry if you think the writing is terrible. My first drafts are always terrible, even after writing 25 novels. Just get the whole story on paper or onto the computer. Then let the story sit for a day or two before you go back and read it again. It probably won t be as bad as you feared. Plus now that you have the whole first draft, it will be a lot easier to revise it. And yes, you will have to revise, probably multiple times. There is no such thing as a perfect first draft. I usually have to revise each book at least four times! The good news is: you can do it. Writing is like a sport. The more you practice, the better you get.
