2 What Do Teachers and Librarians Need? What do we think schools, teachers, and librarians need? What HarperCollins is doing to support these needs and your work with CCSS A sampling of strong Common Core titles from our 2014 list Informational texts for young readers with a voice and perspective, simple yet compelling text features, and source references Literary texts with strong characters and themes Hybrid texts integrating cross-curricular subject areas What Do Teachers and Librarians Need? Educators need to validate that the books/lessons they are teaching are CCSS-aligned including the great titles they have been using for years! Educators need easy access to information about books aligned to the Common Core, how the books meets the standards, plus Common Core-aligned teaching materials, such as discussion guides, classroom activities, lesson suggestions, author studies, and more. Educators need to easily find the best new books that support the CCSS for their classrooms, students and patrons. 9 Downloadable title and author guides aligned to the Common Core are currently available at thepageturn.com/commoncore, and soon... More than 200 resources and Common Core strands available on our soon-to-be-launched Common Core website: readcommoncore.com Website built for your needs books and guides are searchable by grade level, subject, theme, Common Core keyword, GRL, format, and, soon, Lexile level. 4 Thank you! Our website readcommoncore.com will be live shortly. Please check it out and send me your feedback! Jodie Cohen Senior Marketing Manager Patty Rosati Director, School and Library Integrated Marketing Listening Library Audiobooks Support Common Core CoreandAudiobooks.com Audiobooks can be seamlessly incorporated into lesson plans with CCSS. We worked with Sharon Grover and Lizette Hannegan to create detailed examples of how easy it is to use audiobooks in CCSS lesson plans and organized lists of educator suggested title collections. Audiobooks & Common Core Students must meet standards for speaking, listening, and language; skills that are proven to grow stronger by listening to audiobooks. Audiobooks expose children to new vocabulary and develop an appreciation of literary language. They provide an understanding of correct pronunciation of English, and non-english words. They also provide demonstrations of fluent reading and appropriate phrasing, intonation, and articulation. Listening is the Gateway to Learning Is FUNDAMENTAL to learning the other language arts: Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It is the most used of all language arts 85% of what we learn, we learn by listening 30% of students are auditory learners Listening can be improved through practice Most listeners normally retain about 20% of content Listening does not improve with age alone The average adult attention span is 7 minutes (Vardell, 2005) 4

5 Wealth of Audiobooks to Choose Perfect for Young Listeners The CCSS do not replace subject content standards. Students must still learn history, social studies, and science. Therefore, educators can continue offering high quality audiobooks to supplement reading in various content areas.
