2 Logan Library Annual Report 2004 Introduction Usage of the Logan Library continued to grow steadily throughout Demand for services and resources increased in every category exceeding all previous years activity records. Building and maintaining the general, reference, and electronic collections is on going with a renewed emphasis on improving access to all collections. All library services are continuously being reviewed and revised to ensure high quality results for the public. Circulation services Usage of the circulating collections increased 7% during 2004 representing a growth of 3.2 items over the previous year in the average number of items circulated per year per card. At the end of2004 the library records show 24,473 registered library cardholders. 3 Five Year Comparison: Year Card Holders , , , , , ,350 Average Items per Card The number of visits to the library increased by 11 % for an additional 31,3 81 visits over This represents an average of 92 visitors per hour for every hour the library is open during the year. The highest circulation day for the year was July 6th with 4,855 items checked out. Patron exit count for 2004: 279,090 Reference services The library reference staff field questions from the public at the reference desk, in the children's area, by telephone, and through the Internet. The number of reference questions answered during the past year rose to a new high of 41,633. This represents an average of 13.8 questions per hour. Available resources and methods of accessing these resources are changing rapidly. Usage of the library's home page grew by 17 % during the past twelve months. Online Statistics: Hits Entire Site (successful): 8,990,088 Page Views: 2,631,924 Visits to the library's home page: 535,851 Average visits per day: 1,460 Average visit length: 21 minutes 39 seconds Unique Visitors: 189,021 Number of online databases: 53 Number of electronic resources: 52, 752
4 Technical Services The Technical services division of the library continued to enhance access to the library's collections through refined processing and cataloguing techniques. The intent of the changes made in technical services is to improve the public's ability to search and find the actual item that they would like to read or that they need for their individual research. Total catalogued items: 210,664 Total number of titles in the collection: 171, 177 Items added this year: Donations received: 1,528 Items purchased 12,565 Total: 14,093 Electronic resources added: 10,533 Items deleted this year: 8,433 Programs and Activities The library offers a pre-school story time program, and the Summer reading program for children as well as a variety of other activities throughout the year. The library celebrated National Library Week during April and used the theme "Take Flight@ your library" featuring the USU Wright Flyer and a diverse collection of kites. The theme for the Summer reading program for children was "Discover New Trails-Read". The library also celebrated National Children's Book week in November. Story time: Sessions held: 178 Attendance: 4,560 Special Story times: Sessions held: 40 Attendance: 1,114 Summer Reading Program for Children: Number of participants: 2,305 Number of minutes read: 956,480 Summer Reading program for Young Adults: 450 participants Summer Reading program for adults: 765 participants
5 Special Projects The Library received and implemented the following LSTA grants: Online Computer Managemen5 System: $4, 112 This grant purchased equipment and software to manage the reservation of the library's twelve online public computers. This system ensures that each patron receives fair and equitable access to the library's computer resources. More than 3,000 patrons per month use these computers. English as a Second Language Resources: $7,500 This grant purchased print and audio-visual resources for patrons who speak English as a second language. The library purchased 187 items with the grant including a set of books on tape geared for the ESL patron. Each book on tape consists of the book with the accompanying cassettes read at a slower pace for the patron to read along with the tape. These have been very popular items. Also purchased were dvd and video sets for learning English and for reviewing topics such as punctuation and grammar. Everton Publisher's Library The library received through private donation the Everton Publisher's Library. The Everton Publisher's Library also know as the Everton Genealogical Library consists of the following resources dealing with state, county, and local history and genealogy, and family history: 7,097 hardbound books 13,376 softbound books 2,987 ring bound books 3,619 loose leaf books 1,508 folders 163 Special collection materials 876 reference books 18,800 microfiche 49 microfilms 14,354 family newsletters 12,326 local newsletters 6, 121 printed family journals 288 CDs 12 videos 422 State & Foreign Maps 125 atlases 162 travel guides 39,000 pedigree charts 97,000 family group sheets
