5 New Member Profile Pete Johnson Book Machine Sales, Inc. Pete tell us about Book Machine Sales. How long have you been in business and what are your primary goals and focus? I founded and managed Book Machine Sales since After a career of rebuilding hardcover binding equipment, mainly on Kolbus machinery, I did recognized the need for quality technical services in this area. Bookmanufacture has always been my love. I went to auctions, purchased used hardcover binding equipment, rebuilt them as almost like new and shipped these machines all over the world. While providing such services, I did discover many mechanical items, which could be improved. This was an important factor to aid my friends in industry. Soon, Book Machine Sales was the # 1 provider to re-design and rebuild machinery used for hardcover binding. Later, Book Machine Sales became the sole agent for Otabind International and Ochsner Gilding equipment. What is your background and where did you obtain your Jack of All Trades skills? After my time in the Army, I went to work for the legendary Schuler Brothers, the agents for Kolbus America. Bob and Emil Schuler were known for their high skills, instructing even Kolbus in Germany of how to make some changes to their sophisticated machinery. I could have had no better teachers. I worked for them for 15 years, traveled back and forth to Germany, basically Americanizing Kolbus machinery. Example - The Germans were not used to around the clock production. Hydraulic fluids in their equipment then boiled over and caused down times. Later, I concentrated on luxury leather bindings (Franklin Mint) and Bibles. These books required gilding and that then developed the ongoing relationship with the Ochsner Machinery Company in Switzerland. Our reputation also connected us to Otabind International for whom we acted as the sole agent. Werner Rebsamen worked for them as part-time technical director. When he introduced me to his patent, the RepKover layflat binding, we built several different machines. Millions of softcover layflat textbooks have been RepKover bound on our machines which unfortunately seem never to wear out. Currently, we still market the versatile RKM 612. With new machine designs, we soon found ourselves building all kinds of machinery for the hardcover trade. In-line round corner equipment, book splitting, re-engineering three-knife trimmers for extremely small pocket Bibles for Gideon etc.. Please tell us why you did join HBI and how you think this will help your company? While rebuilding a gilding machine for Bridge Publications in L.A., I did see Werner again who trained the crews on aspects of hardcover binding. The Church of Scientology set-up the most sophisticated digital print bookmanufacturing facility. In our discussions, I was made familiar with current trends and then decided that we should be part of that digital print revolution. This mainly to share our in-depth knowledge of book manufacture. Where do you see things heading in the next 3 to 5 years for your company and the industry? On-Demand and ultra-short run printing and binding are here to stay. Digital printing will be the driving force in this revolution. Decades ago, our production Continued next page The Endpaper August

6 New Member Profile Continued from page 5 runs used to be in the tens of thousands with less that 100,000 titles published. These days, we produce 275,000 titles each year but the runs are now extremely small. These trends require re-engineering of equipment and gadgets and that is where we can be of help. What helps you to stay current on industry trends and/ or ahead of the curve? Thanks to my past and good relationships with the folks down in the trenches in book-manufacture, I managed to stay current and often see, what new trends evolve. I m very confident, that my extensive experiences with fine leather bindings, Bibles and gilding will come in handy. There is a trend for such customized, luxury bindings in the On-demand and Photo Book business. Just think of beautiful family heritage or photo books, the book blocks being gilded and the covers bound in leather. What do you do for fun outside of the office? I live on a large farm in Pennsylvania. The activities required to maintain that property helps me to relax and think of new projects. As a sport, I love to play tennis. Seven Printing and Production Executives Inducted into the Printing Impressions/Rochester Institute of Technology Printing Industry Hall of Fame and the Publishing Executive Hall of Fame A total of seven printing and production executives will be inducted into the Printing Impressions/Rochester Institute of Technology Printing Industry Hall of Fame and the Publishing Executive Hall of Fame at the 22nd Annual Gold Ink Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet, to be held September 14th at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place s Regency Ballroom, during PRINT 09, Chicago, IL. These include: PRINTING IMPRESSIONS/RIT PRINTING IN- DUSTRY HALL OF FAME Inductees: JANET GREEN, CEO, Greens Printing Ms. Green is the third woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining Judith Booth and Diane Romano. She was the first female to serve as chairman of the board for the Printing Industries of America in its 130- year existence. Eight years ago, she testified in front of the U.S. Senate on the subject of repealing the estate tax, an issue of importance to all private business owners across every industry. She s also been involved with the local PIASC chapter in various executive roles since 1995, including chapter chair, public relations committee chair and member of the government affairs committee. 6 The Endpaper August 2009 On the national level, Ms. Green is active with the finance, association relations, planning and government affairs committees, among others. RALPH PONTILLO, President, Miami Valley Publishing Mr. Pontillo graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Stout and kicked off his 37-year career with a stint at the former Wallace Business Forms. His big break came when he joined the venerable W.A. Krueger in Scottsdale, AZ. In 1994, Mr. Pontillo was hired by Transcontinental to right the ship of Miami Valley Publishing, located in Fairborn, OH. In January of 2009, he began negotiations with the company to take ownership of Miami Valley. For the past 10 years, Mr. Pontillo has been an active participant with the Web Offset Association (WOA) and its board of directors; he served a three-year stint as chairman. Previously, he was on the GATF Innovations selection committee and a number of other task forces. STEVE HAYES, CEO, Omaha Print Mr. Hayes has spent the last 37 years continuing a proud tradition at Omaha Print, which traces its business roots Continued next page

7 Publishing Hall of Fame Continued from page 6 back more than 150 years, before Nebraska had even been admitted to the union. After toying with the idea of going to law school, Mr. Hayes attended the University of Northern Colorado, where he played football on a scholarship, then joined the ranks of Omaha Print. In his early years, he worked in the office products division. Mr. Hayes took the helm of the company in 1991, and made several strategic moves. First, he divested the company of its office products division, mindful of the emergence of superstores such as Staples. Then he invested in sheetfed, followed by web, technology. Described as both a maverick and a visionary, Mr. Hayes has been an active participant with the PIA, Printing Industries of the Midlands and NAPL. HERB ZEBRACK, President, Lithographix Mr. Zebrack, for more than 50 years, has strived to take the quality of printing to a higher level. He s certainly done as much during his tenure with Lithographix; a $1.6 million a year performer when he took the reins in 1980, the company now registers sales of roughly $125 million. Still, Mr. Zebrack refuses to take all the glory for Lithographix s accomplishments, saying, Our growth is not a tribute to me, but a tribute to we. Mr. Zebrack took printing class in high school and honed his skills at L.A. Trade Tech, an industrial arts college. After stints at a few smaller shops, he arrived at Lithographix in the early 1970s. PUBLISHING EXECUTIVE HALL OF FAME Inductees: SHONA BURNS, Executive Director of Production, Chronicle Books MARK W. WHITE, Vice President Manufacturing and Distribution, U.S. News & World Report Mr. White joined U.S. News & World Report in 1995 doing cost analysis as a financial analyst in manufacturing before being elevated to manager and eventually director. His ability to wade into complex manufacturing and production issues and to master them sets him apart from so many of his peers, and has led to many cost saving ideas and projects throughout his career. JOHN BLANCHARD, Vice President of Operations, Reed Business Information (RBI) Mr. Blanchard spent 20-plus years in the consumer packaging industry-where there was a heavy emphasis on efficiency and automation-principles that manufacturing managers live by today. He joined RBI 11 years ago, as a consultant in the prepress area in the company s Chicago office. He worked his way up through management positions, starting as operations manager of the Chicago division, eventually expanding his purview to include the offices of Variety and other entertainment properties on the West Coast. The September issue of Printing Impressions will feature a profile of each of the PI/RIT Hall of Fame inductees and the September issue of Publishing Executive will feature a profile of each of the PE Hall of Fame inductees. The Gold Ink Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet is cosponsored by Printing Impressions, Publishing Executive and Book Business magazines. For more information, visit Ms. Burns, in the course of her 23-year career, has demonstrated how a willingness to learn, coupled with an innovative spirit, can translate into success. Rather than resisting the technological and workflow developments that have transformed publishing over the past 15 years, Ms. Burns has embraced them to maximum strategic advantage. Her formal training at Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland included ink technology, editorial, copy editing, language, art history and graphic design, and afforded her a big-picture view of publishing operations. 8 ALA ALCTS Book and Paper Interest Group Notes from July 11, 2009 meeting, Chicago, IL Many thanks to chairs Beth Doyle, Molly McIlhon, and Carrie McGinnis for providing these notes. UPDATES LBI Debra Nolan, LBI and HBI LBI director Debra Nolan recently met with other Association leaders and discussed the importance of providing value to their members during this hard economic time. LBI is happy to be sponsoring the Library Binding Tool Kit LBI is working on a standard for photo books with I3A (International Imaging Institute). Library Binding Tool Kit Laura Cameron, Stanford University The goal of the tool kit is to target small to midsized libraries through workshops and programs to promote and support collection-based knowledge, to extend life and increase accessibility of collections, and increase staff knowledge. The New Charge for the Book and Paper Interest Group should state: Discussion of matters related to the preservation and continuing role of books, paperbased materials, and other tangible artifacts in collections. Discussion includes, but is not limited to, library binding, physical quality and treatment. Mass digitization projects: What is the role of the modern preservation program in these initiatives? Throughout the discussion of the meeting, the following questions were posed and discussed: Does your institution participate in a mass digitization project? Most institutions are participating in digitization in one way or another. How are books selected for digitization? Selection is heavily determined by the capabilities of the scanning equipment used, and condition of the material being scanned. What are the implications for projects that select only books in good, functional condition for digitization? Damaged or brittle materials are not being digitized at all or until they have been repaired. Do you have input on the digitization setup? Some do, some don t Do you train digitization technicians in care and handling? Some libraries, like Yale, have had the opportunity to train staff or use their own staff for selection and scanning. Are books damaged during the digitization process? Books can be damaged during the scanning process so in most cases the material is reviewed post scanning and may be sent for repair. How do you treat books from this workflow? Due to the high volume of books that are found in need of repair during this process, it is nearly impossible to treat every item. Do you repair damaged books before the digitization process (in order to facilitate digitization)? Because material has to be in good condition for digitization projects, the projects themselves can benefit preservation by giving priority to items needing repair that previously were overlooked. Push for digitizing special collections. RBMS has assembled a task force to establish guidelines for such projects. digitization/index.shtml As scanning of Special Collections happens Preservation should think about policies beforehand. Ideas for thinking forward: Print is the gold standard; it stands behind the digital content for authenticity. Our role is to advocate for those materials and participating in those discussions. 9 Technical Director s Report Werner Rebsamen Aspects of Side-Sewing Book-Blocks Over the last few weeks, our offices received several requests in regards to side-sewing. One item had to do with library binding. Books made in Asia (we know the country but do not want to be specific) were supposed to meet our strict Standard. The American publisher did not like the quality furnished and contacted us to render a professional opinion. Well, just look below you be the judge! The library bound book had stitches missing. The stitches were too far inwards, too far apart. Dull needles were used. The joints of the cover are too small, exerting too much pressure onto the sewing, among other things. Our Standard reads as follows: (7.5.3) A lock stitch shall be used. Stitches shall be approx. ½ inch (13 mm) long. The sewing shall be no farther from the head and tail of the text block than ½ inch after trimming, and shall be no farther from the binding edge than 3/16 inch. One must wonder why would anyone contract bookbinding, especially library binding, to a far away place, not knowing if the binder is capable of delivering the quality required to meet our Standard? A few sample books made in advance would have been enough to make a judgment with regard to the binding quality. Now those books are headed for the publisher s graveyard! The strongest type of a binding Side-sewing, if done right, results into the strongest binding possible. Pete Johnson of Book Machine Sales, one of our newest members, recently supplied me with sample books that are side sewn. Now if you think these are regular textbooks like you used in school, you are wrong. The request for binding made by a publisher was, the book may never have a chance come apart! They must endure daily use under all circumstances. A reader may place a pencil or screwdriver into the book block to mark a specific place. This request for such a strong binding was made by a religious foundation. These Jewish prayer books are being used every day for years. I had to agree with other bookbinding experts; only a side-sewn book could fulfill such a tough request, meeting the high quality standard the publisher set for their bindings. Continued next page The Endpaper August

10 Technical Director s Report Continued from page 9 Careful planning is the key for success. When side-sewing, the entire book block is sewn together from the front to the back. It is like I would drive a nail all-the-way through the entire book block. In other words, nothing will move in the spine area. This requires minimum margins of 1 inch or more. The paper grain direction must be parallel to the spine. The flexing characteristics of the paper must be accordingly. The sample book shown below is self-explanatory. illustrations. First we adhesive bound the book blocks, using only a very thin coat of adhesive and no lining on the spine (similar to padding). After trimming, the book blocks were gilded on all three sides. Then, with a special gadget we designed and built ourselves, we actually side-sewed a slight round into the book block, using a heavy duty Mc- Cain sewer. Some side-sewing machines, especially those used for thicker books, first drill a hole and then sew the entire book block. Side-sewing machines used for thinner book blocks, such as children s and photo books, use needles only. Needles have certain limitations; some coated papers are very hard! Machinery manufacturers therefore set limitations on the thicknesses their machinery is capable to handle. One lists a maximum of 5/16, another of up to ½ inches. I must assume that up to statement is for softer papers. When the needles start to break, then you will be aware of the limitations. A Jewish prayer book to be used every day. Strength and durability of the binding had priority. Note that nothing moves past the sewing. Great job planning. Book does stay open by itself. Nothing is able to move in the bind fold areas. Casing-in is done tight-back, which means, the spine of the book block is glued onto the covers inlay strip. Nothing flexes past the sewing. It is the most solid type of a binding and therefore the most durable. Just think back onto your days in school, those side-sewn textbooks did seem to last forever. If reinforced appropriately, they do meet the tough NASTA standard for school textbooks. Side-sewing equipment There are several types of side-sewing equipment used by library, edition and photo book binders. Some have bulk limitations. The thickest books we ever side-sewed had a bulk of 2 inches large, heavy family bibles with lots of The types of lock stitches are an important feature. The best known side-sewing machines are McCain, Moffett, Singer and ODM. The latter is an all new development for the photo book markets. It features a side-sewing pattern with a reverse lock stitch on the head and tail, locking-in the threads and with this feature assures a very strong sewing that will never come apart. Difficult to bind photo papers most often require side-sewing. Recently, this writer had several requests where some of our members and others wanted to know if I have an article in my files on side-sewing. There are unfortunately none. With the interest being so high for this method of binding, we will write a more in-depth article on side-sewing for an upcoming issue of ShelfLife. Werner Rebsamen is Professor Emeritus at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the technical consultant to HBI and the Library Binding Institute. 11 Executive Director s Report Debra S. Nolan, CAE Is your ladder leaning against the right wall? This question was posed in a leadership development session I recently attended. I suppose you could look at this question from a variety of perspectives but it made me think about the importance of relying on the right entity or structure to uphold and facilitate one s energies and aspirations. As I get older, I think more about the sweat equity that goes into things. I ask what and why more often than when and how. In uncertain economic times, there is a new normal. The importance of asking questions and taking a closer look at what we are doing and why we are doing things could make the difference between being in business or not in the coming year. Are we hanging our hopes on outmoded ways of thinking or relying on business models that no longer work? It could be a matter of fine-tuning or a major overhaul may be needed. I wonder how this association can serve as a resource to help to facilitate dialogue and thinking around this. Perhaps it can be explored further when we all gather October 22 24, in Park City. Your comments and suggestions are most welcome. Something to Think About We are now entering the world of real-time publishing and leaving the archaic on demand publishing realm. Those of you who have not yet embraced the on demand world may have an opportunity to jump past your competition very quickly! -John Lacagnina, ColorCentric President and CEO (As quoted by Barb Pellow, Books On Demand: The Book Publisher s Dilemma, The Printer s Dilemma and Opportunity, August 13th, 2009) The Endpaper August
