2 Perma-Bound Books: A Brief History by Lisa Orr-Taylor The original employees of Hertzberg New-Method Bindery. History of Hertzberg New-Method Hertzberg New-Method was incorporated December The bindery opened on June 17, 1954 with 60 employees. The new company was formed by 3 rebinding departments of three library book binderies: Hertzberg Craftsman of Des Moines, IA, New Method Book Bindery of Jacksonville, IL, and The Monastery Hill Bindery of Chicago that dates back to The Hertzberg brothers from Monastery Hill Bindery and Hertzberg Craftsman got together and decided to start a new bindery which would take over the library binding divisions of the three binderies. The bindery was to be located in Jacksonville, IL because of its central location. Hertzberg New-Method was established for quality conservation of books. The bindery focused on rebinding books, periodicals, and pamphlets for schools, libraries, and universities. They also had a special binding department where archival and rare books were processed. These books were done with leather and embossed with gold leaf. The department has done work for former President Reagan and Pope John Paul II. Hertzberg New- Method, Inc. Perma-Bound has been a leader in the book rebinding industry now for almost 50 years. Perma-Bound books are known for their quality and unconditional guarantee. They are the strongest books you can buy. Perma-Bound will be one of the binderies visited during the 2010 Fall Conference, October Birth of Perma-Bound In 1961, Lawrence Hertzberg, grandson of Ernst Hertzberg, took a trip to Scotland to visit 17 binderies that were rebinding paperbacks using a polyurethane wrapped cover. This new binding technique made the books stronger and more durable. Lawrence came back to the United States and further developed the binding method and patented it. The new division of Hertzberg New-Method, Inc. was born. It was the pre-bound paperback division called Perma-Bound. Perma-Bound Books, a division of Hertzberg New-Method, sells books to K-12 schools and public libraries. Perma-Bound books are school tough and library proven. After Lawrence E. Hertzberg passed away in the early 1970s James K. Orr, grandson of Ernst Hertzberg became President and owner of the book bindery. The company later sold their hard bind division in 1995 to Heckman Bindery and changed their name to Perma-Bound. Perma-Bound continues to be owned by descendents of Ernst Hertzberg. James K. Orr passed away in 1998 and his son, James Q. Orr, preceded him as President of the company. His three children are currently involved in the business and it will LBI 75th Anniversary Trivia Challenge In the April 2010 issue, we asked: What year did the Library Binding Standard become an ANSI/NISO/LBI Standard? Answer: 2000 Here s this month s question: In what year did the Library Binding Institute expand to become Hardcover Binders International? Look for the answer in the June/July issue of The Endpaper. 4 NEWS Looking Back... Gerrit Dykhouse, LBI/HBI President, The Big Issue when Gerrit Dykhouse was president may have very well been one of the biggest issues facing the association in its 70 + year history - whether or not the association should change its course beyond library binding to include those who bind hardcover books. The library binding business had been declining for several years, due to budget cuts and the digitization of books and journals. The number of certified library binder members was decreasing due to mergers/acquisitions and members closing their doors. Although there continued to be a core group of dedicated members, the opportunity for growth did not exist given the market. Since most of the current binder members were remaining solvent by diversifying their product/service mix, a logical course of action was to alter the scope of the association to more closely reflect the business of its members. Gerrit and Cori Dykhouse, Wallaceburg Bookbinding, 2007 Spring Meeting, Santa Fe, New Mexico dent emerged stronger then before my term began. The reaffirmation and recognition by colleagues that the tough times yielded positive results is what I value the most. According to Gerrit, The 2007 fall meeting in Springfield, attended by members and nonmembers who were interested in touring Bridgeport National Bindery, shed light on the fact that knowledge related to hardcover binding expertise was in demand. Extensive efforts were made to gain member input on this tough issue. Despite some hand wringing and difficult dialogues, the majority of members thought this was a good idea. In the end, the decision to broaden the association s scope was good for binders business, suppliers business, and for the evolution of the association. When asked what he found most meaningful about his time as president, Gerrit responded, The friendships and relationships that developed throughout my time as presi- What s On Your Cover? Use of print library collections is shifting from physical circulation to digital reformatting and screen delivery. Does this shift suggest a continuing role for physical collections or does their screen delivery inherently suggest print disposal? Recent technologies of print-on-demand will be evaluated from a preservation perspective. We will also discuss interdependence of similar physical and digital collections and the functionalities of back-up, mastering and authentication that physical collections provide for their screen delivered copies. Then we will hear of preservation service reassignment and preservation advocacy for the continuing role of print in the context of its digital delivery. 8 A Special Birthday Greeting Special 75th birthday wishes were sent to Professer Werner Rebsamen from his students at Bridge Publications. Tubular Back-Linings Technical Director s Report Werner Rebsamen Researching this subject had some surprises. Many call it a Hollow Back which is somewhat confusing. Every hardcover binding, which is not cased-in or glued tight-backed, that is the spine of the book block being glued to the inlay of the cover structure, is actually a hollow-back structure. A Library of Congress publication compares this terminology with earlier bindings, when leathers of the cover used to be glued onto spines. It has been said that a flexible hollow spine structure originated in about 1770 in France. Those are today s common case bindings which feature a hollow back. Very little information could be found about a spine reinforcing technique we used extensively in fine Bible and high quality hardcover bindings. There is a little 8 The Endpaper May 2010 known hollow tube technique. Hardcover bindings must be engineered to perform and last like so many other products. What are the moving parts? Where are the critical points and stress factors exerted onto the binding? At the LBI/RIT book-testing laboratory, we have done many studies and evaluations and thanks to the UBT book testing device, we learned about the structure / reinforcing techniques which are best for durable hardcover bindings. Just evaluate some bindings yourself. Where do hardcover bindings fail? They always seem to fail in the joint areas. The bindings either lack appropriate reinforcements or sufficient joint gluing. In other words, the main stress factors are always on the very binding edge, in the Continued next page

9 Technical Director s Report Continued from page 8 front and in the back, that is, in the flexible hinge areas of a hardcover binding. Now, we must ask ourselves, is there a structure capable enough of absorbing these forces? The answer is yes. When hand bookbinding, a hollow spine tubular back-liner is simply the best. How else could you mount those leather hinges onto the cover? In earlier times, we could purchase hardcover binding lining-up machines which applied a tubular lining onto the spine. While to my knowledge these gadgets are no longer available, certain bindings require such a tubular back lining. Take for instance a leather-lined, flexible cover. There is simply no other way than to case-in such bindings with a crafted, tubular liner. At World Publishing, at that time the Worlds largest printer and binder of Bibles, we bound those particular, expensive leather Bible bindings by the hundreds of thousands. Those book blocks, gilded on all three sides, required back-lining with a hollow tubular back-lining. The tubes were folded and cut on a specially built machine. PVA adhesive was applied to the spine and the tubes mounted. Needless to say, those relatively stiff tubes made from a strong, black paper did not adhere well. This required a trick. The books were stacked. While stacking and reversing them, a sheet of plastic from a roll above was intertwined, forcing the tubes to stick tightly to the spine. Left to dry in stacks, those hollow tubes never came loose. But this work is very special for certain types of flexible leather bindings, which we intend to cover in another newsletter. Now what about hardcover bindings? Common hardcover bindings do not require a hollow, tubular back lining. Today s hardcover binding equipment is capable of doing an exceptional good job with joint gluing, however, there are always special hardcover bindings which must be exceptionally strong and durable. Others may be bound with a limited, flexible joint area. Take the fine leather hardcover bindings from Franklin Mint and others. When you use relatively thick leather and try to avoid Leather lined covers require a tubular liner. Continued next page The Endpaper May

10 Technical Director s Report Continued from page 9 joint creasing, there is a problem. Worse, these bindings, like those Franklin Mint bindings, feature Moire-Silk endpapers which are stiff and resist flexing in the joints. When opening such a fancy binding, the forces exerted onto the joint area are exceptionally strong and may split the bindings between the first pages. There are ways to absorb these forces with specially engineered endpapers and reinforcing structures. But as stated, the very best solution is a hollow, tubular back-liner. It will absorb those stress forces exerted like no other technique. As stated earlier, engineering a case binding structure requires indepth knowledge of all the forces at work and most of all, choosing the right options for a successful binding. When should hand, library and edition hardcover binders use a tubular liner? Let us assume you are binding an exceptionally large format hardcover binding; one that exceeds all limits of your available machinery. You know this is a most difficult task when it gets to the casing-in operation. When you apply the water-based adhesive onto the endpapers, the papers tend to curl. You try to control that expansion, folding the corners slightly over. Glue gets on your fingers! Then you transfer the adhesive onto the cover. The same holds true for exceptionally large or heavy book blocks. A tubular back-liner is a blessing. Apply a coat of PVA onto the spine and wrap the cover around the book block. Now you are able to concentrate on perfect squares without getting glue on your fingers. Let the cased-in binding set and dry and then, using a casing-in Leather hardcover bindings with small hinges can be furnished with tubular linings mounted into the cover. Shown is a partial tubular lining. Casing-in is done on the hardcover binding machine, tight-backed, that is the spine is glued to the cover, yet the tubular lining allows the book block to flex freely within the cover. adhesive, paste-off one endpaper at a time. All you have to do is close the cover. The perfect squares are guaranteed. Then follow with pressing. As for using a tubular, hollow back-lining on edition works, like the fine leather hardcover bindings as described earlier, you must first fabricate the tubular liner. They must be exactly the height of the trimmed book block and exactly the width of the spine. Then, using a gluing machine, mount those tubular linings into the covers, onto the top of the inlay. When hand bookbinding, I use light cloth, usually small left-over pieces, matching colors. However, most of the time, a strong paper is used to fabricate those tubular liners. Make sure that the grain direction is always parallel to the binding edge! When casing-in on your hardcover binding equipment, use the tight-back gluing feature. Now, in the joint areas, you have a reinforced, hollow spine and best of all, an enhanced structure ready to absorb any stress like no other technique. No matter how you test and evaluate your hardcover structures, there is simply no better combination of strength and open-ability when you use a sewn-throughthe-fold book block furnished with a hollow-back tubular back lining. 11 Executive Director s Report Items of Note: Debra S. Nolan, CAE Soon, a registration form for the 2010 fall conference will be available. This meeting will offer an unprecedented opportunity for three bindery tours in addition to a celebration of the association s 75th anniversary. If you have ideas on activities or content, please let me know. In the next issue, I will share with you the progress made on the photobook standard during the International Imaging Association s meetings in Rochester, New York, May 18 and 19. The working group minutes will soon be available. The first 60 sets of the Library Binding Toolkit have been distributed since they were made available earlier this year. The toolkit will be showcased during the ALCTS meetings to be held in conjunction with the American Library Association Annual Meeting late June, Washington, DC. Given the dates of the ALA Annual Meeting, June 25 28, the June and July Endpaper issues will be combined. Certified library binder member Southern Library Bindery closed their doors in April. Something to Think About Who has the most scientific knowledge of large-scale organization, collection, and access to information? Librarians, says Bol. A librarian can take a book, put it somewhere, and then guarantee to find it again. If you ve got 16 million items, he points out, that s a very big guarantee.
