Volatile, short tempered and a slave to vices like wine and women. Such things are said about him incessantly. His wife, Zarina Wahab, and children, Sooraj and Sana, are probably the main stabilising factors in his life. And, when recently that was rocked, with Sooraj landing in trouble after his girlfriend, Jiah Khan, hung herself, Aditya took over the role of a father who d go to any extent to protect the interests of his son. He is aware of his reputation. He is candid when he says that he has always advised Sooraj to maintain a good public image and not to become like him. I advised him never to drink, smoke or lose his cool. He knew these were the virtues that would help him in his life and they did in the case of Sooraj. On the day that Jiah died, ironically, Aditya was having dinner with Rabiya Ali Khan at famous yesteryear actress Anju Mahendru s house. It was a common occurrence. Aditya has been going to Anju s house for the last 25 years. Though he insists that he had only met Rabiya off and on over a period of time. Just before dinner, Rabiya left for home in an auto rickshaw. (Her house is very close to Anju s). Within five to seven minutes of us having said our goodbyes, Anjuji got a call, remembers Aditya. He heard her saying, Don t scream, talk softly, what s the matter? Once the conversation was over, she told Aditya that there was something wrong with Rabiya. Even at that point, says Aditya, everyone thought she had some problem with the autowallah. Anjuji, Munnu (my friend) and I took the car and rushed to find Rabiya. It was when Anjuji
