Persuasive essay ( ( Students will prepare a persuasive essay on a relevant topic that they find important. They could use the research done for this essay to inspire further service projects. 5 MYP 5 English Language & Literature To Kill a Mockingbird 7 Perspective Fairness & Point of View From the point of view of 6 year-old Scout, To Kill a Mockingbird shows the context of the American South in the 1930s while exploring themes of racism, injustice, and loss of innocence., v Students can draw parallels between social and racial issues in To Kill a Mockingbird and their own surroundings, and they could develop a plan to address racism (or other forms of discrimination) in their world. War, Conflict and Poetry 6 Creativity Personal and Some situations are too horrible to express directly, and poetry can help the author to make sense of the atrocities of war. Reflective skills Students will consider past and present conflicts around the world. They could develop a SA project to help current conflict areas. Satire & Social Commentary 7 Communication Globalization and Satire uses exaggeration, incongruity, parody and/or reversal to criticize aspects of society, and if used effectively can raise awareness or instigate social changes. After identifying the global issue they wish to write about, students are encouraged to also find other, more active and direct, ways to interact with this issue. Gothic Literature 7 Creativity Personal & s The dark side of things fascinates us all: ghosts, haunted houses, the supernatural, madness, secrets. It is the aesthetics of death, decay and frightening creations of science and the imagination. An exploration of this dark side of us is essential to being a complete human being.
