3 H E L L O I m Leanne Bear (and yes that is really my surname). I m a Durban born Multimedia Designer with a passion for animation,branding and illustration. This is a collection of my work from the past three years at Vega. During my varsity experience I have been able to expand my creative thinking, improve my skills and I have developed my own design style. I come bearing GIFs and awkward puns. I hope you enjoy.

5 I L L U S T R A T E D S E R I E S Illustrated Bear Puns: I wanted to include a personal project that was unique and fun in my portfolio, something that clearly represents me. Growing up with a surname like mine had its perks and downsides. The bear puns started early on. Hey Leanne, I see you are walking bear foot. This became a regular thing and now people call me by my surname. So it became obvious that this project had to be about bears. My style of illustration has a hand drawn and youthful feel which is often used for the graphics in children s books.

7 P A C K A G I N G D E S I G N The Brief: Loeires Awards Our challenge for this brief was to examine local awards, choose a brief and create something innovative and commendable. The tube: Made from a paperboard that is produced from agricultural waste. It is recyclable, compostable and biodegradable. Category: Communication design - package design Insights: Instant coffee sachet packaging is made of a hybrid of foil and plastic and therefore cannot be recycled. Executions: Redesign Nescafe instant coffee packaging: The redesign is focused on creating products that are less harmful to the environment, from their production through to their disposal. The tube allows for more pods (coffee servings) than the current box design. The new lid design shows a pattern, that incorporates the Nescafe logo in different colours. These colours match the circle label on each tube, indicating the various flavours of coffee. The overall design is a brighter and more modern look. The sachet: Packaging is eliminated by using Monosol films to create dissolvable coffee pods. These pods completely dissolve when added to hot water and as a result no packaging remains. 11 T Y P O G R A P H Y Brief: ISTD - Mark my words This brief is about the origins of language. Trace the history of a word, group of words or phrase and show where it came from its provenance how and when it became part of the English language and how its meaning, use, spelling and pronunciation may have changed in the process. Chosen Word: Dementia Having a grandmother who sometimes doesn t remember my name, made me feel the desire to explore this word and create something that could possible make a difference in tending to her care, as well as others living with the disease. The Booklet: I chose to create an A5 information booklet, aimed at the caregivers of dementia patients. They spend the most time with the patients and it s imperative that the caregivers have access to the best advice and information needed to take care of our loved ones. I placed emphasis on the letters me throughout the book, because Dementia includes personality changes and memory loss, and patients often forget who they are.the book contained copies of my gran s brain scans to emphasize that dementia is a brain disease. The Postcards: I designed a set of postcards, one for each day of the week, because Dementia patients struggle to remember small things like the date. This was a simple way of reassuring the patient on which day it is, without them feeling stressed. Reading messages from loved ones will help to reduce anxiety and allow the patient to feel safe.

16 F O N T D E S I G N Brief: ijusi Magazine Garth Walker of Ijusi magazine challenged us in creating our own font. It had to be inspired by something South African. We were tasked to explore Durban and photograph anything we found interesting. We then had to create a font based off of those photos. When I think about South Africa, I just think about the word home.when I think about my home, I think about my bedroom. When I think about my bedroom and the views from my window, I am reminded about how beautiful the city is and then a Hadeda that is perched on the neighbour s roof, squawks and disturbs my peace. Hadedas are loud and bold birds that are local to South Africa. We don t really stop to admire them because they are not particularly breathtaking. I decided to give them a second look and it turns out they are actually quite unique and interesting creatures. I wanted to celebrate their loud calls and messy poops, by using them as the inspiration for my font. I used the birds silhouettes in different positions and poses to form the letters. My font turned out to be strange and bold, just like our Hadedas.

19 G A M E D E S I G N Brief: Poison City The Game: We were tasked with discovering hidden gems across Durban. In order to do so, I had to take the bridge from Durban North to the city. On my journey I quickly realised the stigma attached to the bridge and Durban City centre which led me to my concept - Crossing the Bridge. Jade Story, Copywriter, wrote a piece emphasizing the ridiculousness that occurs when people consider taking a trip into town. It s hilarious, you should read it! Message: I decide to make a game that challenges the player (Durbanites) to cross the bridge into Durban City. The player avoids obstacles along the way, such as a taxi, a surfer and a cyclist. In order reiterate how simple it is to make the journey to town, the difficulty level is really low. The objective of the game is to cross the bridge and end the journey at Station Drive. This is where you ll find Poison City, which is the start of your Durban adventure. I kept the design of the game simple and clean and based the colours off of Poison City s logo. I wanted to emphasize the amazing things that central Durban has to offer and in order to do that, we all need to cross the bridge.

22 C R O S S I N G T H E B R I D G E Alright breathe, remain calm, repeat after me: It s... just...a...bridge. The treacherous journey from Umhlanga to Town Side has begun, this could be anything from Durban North to Warwick triangle, but it s imperative to keep this air of mystery because someone from the north does not venture to the city centre unless they feel like they need a good stabbing. Tensions are a tad high as the comfort bubble is about to be royally popped as the vehicle hurtles towards the heart of Durban: The vibey city, the hustle and bustle, the unfamiliar, the intimidating, the intriguing and the point of comparison. We all assume we know Durban, if you had to ask someone on the street to name three things they associate with Durban, they will mumble something along the lines of Ushaka Marine World, mumble mumble Gambit the Dolphin, Gateway, and famous spicy food in a soggy loaf of bread. This is atrocious, I will be booking you on the next plane out of here, would you like a window seat? Sally it s like the bloody bridge to Terabithia, nobody really knows what to expect. The windows go up, the doors are locked, the music gets changed from Now 52 to Post Malone as the prep for the city centre starts getting serious. Why are we doing this, I am on edge, where are my meds? It s time to lift up those damn unnecessary bulletproof Oakley glasses and allow your perceptions to openly change. It aint all that bad on the lower Umhlanga side of life, all s good in the hood! We have running water, electricity (sometimes), a vibey town, Woolworths and Musgrave Centre, so take that with two sweeteners! Once you ve made it to the other side in one piece and realised the ordeal was all in your head, your chances of falling in love with the city you perhaps wrongly judged from the outskirts is pretty damn high! For local music and conversations you couldn t find anywhere else in the world, add on dirt cheap food and drinks and you can t help but have a good time. Head over to Khaya Records in Florida Road or Cool Runnings in town for a real taste of the local Durban scene, share a beer and talk shit with whoever is there, and realise that regardless of where we live, Durban is a feeling! And oftentimes we forget to reconnect with the soul this city has to offer. So what s its soul that we need to connect with? It s the little things like bargains on the streets, world class art sprayed on buildings old and new, R18 coffee on the move through town, the little things that you ll miss if you walk too fast. The true Durban gems require a little hunting, don t be afraid of the cracks because this is where the magic hides. written by Jade Story

23 P R I N T S A N D P A T T E R N S Brief: Personal project: notebook design Alright, I confess. I collect notebooks and I don t use them. Stationery, specifically aesthetically pleasing stationery, and even more specifically notebooks, is my weakness. I have a collection of notebooks that I haven t used yet, because they are too pretty and I don t want to ruin them with my notes.now I know that this defeats the main purpose of a notebook, but I cannot help myself. I designed these patterns with the intention of them being used as notebook covers. Having my own line of stationery is in definitely in my plans for the future. I chose to illustrate things I enjoy daily -plants and breakfast!
