14 READING PASSAGE MrFrenshamopenedhisshopateight-thirty,butitwaspastninewhen thewomanandthechildwentin.theshopwasempty.thechildlistenedto themelancholysoundofthebellasthedoorclosedbehindhim hehad neverbeeninthisshopbefore.hewasgoingtohavehishaircutforthefirst timeinhislife,exceptforthetimeswhenhismotherhadtrimmeditgently behind the neck. MrFrenshamwassittinginalargechair,readinganewspaper.Hecould makethechairturnaround,andhespuntwiceaboutinitbeforeheputdown his paper, smiled, and said, Good morning. Hewasanoldman,thin,withflatwhitehair.Heworeawhitecoat. One gentleman, he said, to have his locks shorn. Heputaboardacrossthetwoarmsofhischair,liftedthechild,andsat himonit. Howareyou,mydear?Andyourhusband,ishewell? hesaidtothe child s mother. Hetookasheetfromacupboardonthewallandwrappeditaboutthe child s neck, tucking it into his collar.
