Vera Claythorne was talking Vera Claythorne: So, Dr Armstrong, you say you found Mr Rogers dead? Dr Armstrong: Yes. Someone killed him when he was getting wood for the fire. Vera Claythorne: How do we know you didn t kill him? Dr Armstrong: I m a doctor! I don t kill people! Vera Claythorne: Oh really? So what happened to Mary Clees? Dr Armstrong: I I this is a mistake! I didn t kill anyone. I was drunk and she died, but it wasn t my fault. The nurse she never told anyone! Narrator: Everyone looked at Dr Armstrong. He was shaking. Judge Wargrave: Please! That s enough. We don t know who the killer is. It could be anyone. We need to stay together now. We don t want the killer to get anyone else. Henry Blore: Good idea. Let s sit in the living room. Narrator: said Detective Blore. Everyone thought it was a good idea, and they went into the living room. Only one person didn t stand up: Emily Brent. Emily Brent: I ll stay here for a few minutes. I m tired. Narrator: Emily looked at the table. She looked at the figures on the table and saw that there were only five. Emily Brent: How strange. I m sure there were ten little Indians on the table before. Narrator: Emily felt sleepy. She was thinking about Beatrice. Beatrice was planning to have a baby but she wasn t married. Emily couldn t help her. It was wrong! Then she heard footsteps. Emily Brent: Beatrice, is that you? But you re dead. You died because I took your job! Beatrice? Narrator: The other guests were sitting in the living room. They were all quiet. After a few minutes, Philip Lombard said: Philip Lombard: Where is Miss Brent? Narrator: Everyone looked around, but she wasn t there. Dr Armstrong said: Dr Armstrong: She must be in the dining room. I ll get her. Narrator: But Vera didn t like that idea. Vera Claythorne: No! Not you. I ll go and get her. Narrator: She opened the door and went into the dining room while the other guests waited. A few seconds later, they all heard a scream from the dining room. Vera Claythorne: No! Oh, no! Not Emily! Narrator: To be continued Six little Indian boys playing with a hive A bumblebee stung one and then there were five. Track 2 Adaptation of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, Episode 3, Part 2 Narrator: Emily Brent was dead and no one knew who had killed her. Detective Blore looked at the table where Emily was sitting. Henry Blore: Strange. I know there were ten little Indians when we got here. Now there are only five. 1

2 Vera Claythorne: And five of us here now. Judge Wargrave: We really need to stay together now. Narrator: said Judge Wargrave. They all went back and sat down in their chairs. They sat in the living room for hours. No one wanted to talk. They all looked at each other. Which one of them was the killer? Finally, Vera Claythorne spoke. Vera Claythorne: I can t sit here any more! I want to go home! Where is the boat? Philip Lombard: That s right. The boat still hasn t come. Where is it? Narrator: said Philip Lombard. Judge Wargrave answered him. Judge Wargrave: I don t think the boat will come. Someone made a plan. They brought us to this island because they want to kill us. Dr Armstrong: But it must be one of us. That means one of us is crazy! Narrator: said Dr Armstrong. Vera spoke next. Vera Claythorne: Well it s not me! I m not crazy! And I don t want to sit here any more. I m going upstairs to my room. Philip Lombard: Okay, but we are going with you. When you are in your room, you can lock the door. Then we will know you are safe. Narrator: said Lombard, and they all went upstairs. Philip Lombard, Detective Blore, and Dr Armstrong watched Vera close her door and heard her lock it. Dr Armstrong: Okay, so Vera is safe. Wait, where is Wargrave? Narrator: asked Dr Armstrong. They looked around, but he wasn t there. Henry Blore: He s older than us. Maybe he didn t want to come upstairs. Let s look in the living room. Philip Lombard: Quick, we all need to stay together now! Narrator: said Philip Lombard. The three men went downstairs. Judge Wargrave: Judge Wargrave was there, sitting in his chair. He wasn t moving. Philip Lombard: Oh God! We re too late! Narrator: said Philip Lombard. There was something red on Wargrave s head. Dr Armstrong went to look at him. Dr Armstrong: He s He s dead. Someone shot him with a pistol. Narrator: Vera Claythorne heard the noise and came downstairs. Vera Claythorne: No! Oh, no! Please, no more! I want to go home! Narrator: That night, everyone went to bed at the same time. They went into their rooms and looked at each other before they locked the doors. Henry Blore: What s that? Someone is not in their room. It must be the killer! Narrator: Detective Blore heard someone walk outside the house and close the door. Henry Blore: Now we will see who the killer is. It s the person who is not in their room! Narrator: Detective Blore got up and opened his door. He went to Vera Claythorne s bedroom and knocked on the door. Vera Claythorne: Yes? Who is it? Who s there? Please don t kill me! Henry Blore: It s okay, Vera. It s me, Henry Blore. Stay here. You re safe. Narrator: Next, Detective Blore went to Dr Armstrong s room. He waited, but there was no answer. Finally, he went to Philip Lombard s room. Philip Lombard: Yes? What is it? Henry Blore: Come out, Lombard. Dr Armstrong is not in his room. Vera Claythorne: Are you sure? Henry Blore: I heard someone walking down the stairs, and he s not answering his door. Philip Lombard: He must be the killer! Narrator: Philip Lombard and Henry Blore knocked on Vera s room. Vera: Yes? Philip Lombard: It s all right, Vera. Henry and I are going after Dr Armstrong. He went outside. He must be the killer! Stay in your room and don t open the door for anyone. Wait until we are both here. Vera Claythorne: Be careful! Narrator: Detective Blore and Philip Lombard went out to look for Dr Armstrong. They looked all over the island, but they couldn t find him. Henry Blore: Where is he? Philip Lombard: Forget it. There is nothing we can do. We need to go back. Narrator: They came back to the house and sat in the dining room with Vera. It was almost morning. Philip Lombard: I don t understand! Where is he? Narrator: asked Philip Lombard. Henry Blore: I don t know. Is he the killer? Did he take a boat and leave the island? But there was no boat! Narrator: said Detective Blore. Vera was looking at the table. In the middle, she saw something she did not like. Vera Claythorne: Look! Look at the table. The figures. The little Indians. Henry Blore: What? What s wrong? Philip Lombard: I see it. Vera Claythorne: Oh God! Please no! Philip Lombard: There are only three little Indians. I think I think Dr Armstrong is dead. Narrator: To be continued Five little Indian boys going in for law One got in Chancery and then there were four. Four little Indian boys going out to sea A red herring swallowed one and then there were three. Chancery a part of the court Track 3 The Witches of Salem Narrator: In the winter of 1692, Salem, Massachusetts was a small village in America. Soon everybody would know Salem because the village had the most famous witch hunt in history. Inside the home of Reverend Samuel Parris, his daughter Betty, aged nine, and niece Abigail, aged 11, are acting strangely Betty: Ouch! Ouch! Something is biting me! Abigail: Ow, it s got me too. Reverend: What is it children? What s hurting you? Betty: I don t know! I can t see it! Abigail: Me neither, but it hurts! Ow! Narrator: The girls were acting more and more strangely. Reverend Parris was the leader of the village church. He could not have a scandal like this in his house, so he called Dr Griggs, the village doctor. Reverend: Doctor, what s wrong with them? Doctor: I can t find anything wrong. It must be witchcraft! Reverend: Witchcraft? But how? Narrator: Soon other girls in the village started doing crazy things. Father: Oh no! Now our girl. We must find the witches. Girl: Woof, woof, woof. Narrator: Because more girls became ill, the Constable visited the home of Reverend Parris to talk to Abigail. Constable: Abigail, do you know who the witch is? Abigail: I saw the witches in my dream. They are Constable: They? There are more than one? Abigail: Yes, sir. They are Tituba, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. Constable: Tituba! Of course. I knew she was a witch. But the others? How do you know they are witches? Abigail: Because I saw them in a dream. They were hurting me and laughing at me. Constable: You saw them in a dream? That's enough. We will put these women in jail! Narrator: The first three women in jail were all people who were not typical of Salem s community. Tituba was a black slave and Sarah 2

3 Good was a homeless woman with a small child. She didn t have a husband. Sarah Osborne didn t go to church very often. Constable: I have the witches. Take them to the jail. Jailer: I knew these women were witches. Narrator: But it didn t stop there. Soon more and more people went to jail because they were witches. Jailer: More witches? We need a bigger jail! Narrator: It became very dangerous to live in Salem. It wasn t even safe to talk. Woman One: Did you hear? The Constable arrested four more witches yesterday! Woman Two: The girls are lying. They don t see any witches. Woman One: If you say that, then you must be a witch too! Help! Someone bring the Constable! Narrator: With more than 200 people in jail, the trials began. Judge: And how do you know it was Sarah Good who hurt you, Abigail? Abigail: I saw her in a dream. Judge: Sarah Good, can you prove this is not true? Sarah Good: That s not possible! This is crazy. Judge: Sarah Good, we are hanging you because you re a witch. Sarah Good: I am not a witch! Narrator: Twenty people were hanged for being witches, and not only people were hanged. Judge: You are guilty of being a witch. You will die! Dog: Arff, arff. Narrator: Sir William Phips, the governor of Massachusetts, heard about the witch hunt. He could not believe it. Governor Phips: Two hundred people in prison for being witches? That s crazy. I didn t know there were 200 people in that village. Narrator: After Governor Phips said dreams weren t evidence, no other people were found guilty. Later, the families of the victims of the witch hunt got some money. The Salem witch hunt was over, but it will never be forgotten. Track 4 KET for Schools Practice Test 1 This is the Key English Test for Schools Listening Paper. There are five parts to the test. Parts One, Two, Three, Four and Five. Now look at the instructions for Part One. Part One You will hear five short conversations. You will hear each conversation twice. There is one question for each conversation. For each question, choose the right answer, A, B or C. 1 What is the girl going to wear to the party? Man: What s the matter, Judy? You look sad. Judy: I wanted to wear my favourite jeans to the party on Saturday, but they re dirty. And I don t think it s a good idea to wear the blue skirt and white T-shirt they re too boring. Man: Yes, I think you re right. Why don t you wear your lovely new dress? Judy: That s a great idea. I ll wear that and my pink trainers. It ll be perfect! 2 Which building is next to the swimming pool? Girl: Excuse me, where s the swimming pool, please? Man: Oh, that s easy. Go straight on to the café on the corner and then turn left. The swimming pool is next to the cinema. Girl: Is it far? Man: No, it isn t far. When you get to the supermarket, you ll see it. It s opposite. Girl: Thank you. 3 What is a good present for Mary? Boy: Hmm I think a computer game is a good present for Mary. Girl: Well, I like computer games, but Mary hasn t got a computer! Boy: Oh, yes! You re right! So, what about a music CD? Girl: Yes, that s a good idea. She loves music. 4 What sport did the girl play yesterday? Boy: Did you go swimming yesterday, Mona? Mona: Not yesterday, that was the day before. Yesterday, I wanted to play tennis, but it was raining. Boy: So what did you do? Mona: We played volleyball in the school gym in the end. It was fun! 5 Where are the family going to stay? Mum: Look at the photos of these hotels. This one by the sea is ours! Boy: It looks nice, but I wanted to stay in a tent! Mum: Well, your dad and I want something more comfortable this time. And it s got a swimming pool! Boy: Oh, Mum! That s boring! This is the end of Part One. Track 5 Part Two Now look at Part Two. Listen to Adrian talking to a friend about the activities he did at summer camp. What activity did he do on each day? For questions 6 10, write a letter A H next to each day. You will hear the conversation twice. Sophie: Hi, Adrian! Did you have a good time at the camp? Adrian: It was great. I tried all sorts of new activities. On Monday a local guitarist came and we had a music workshop. He taught us how to play one of his songs on the guitar! Sophie: I bet you were great! And was that the only musical activity? Adrian: No! On Tuesday, we got a chance to write songs of our own. Some of my friends wrote some beautiful music. Sophie: Great! And what about Wednesday? Adrian: We could choose between a hip hop or a cooking class. You know how much I love hip-hop music. But I m very bad at dancing, so I learnt how to make lasagna instead. Here, I ll show you a photo. Sophie: Mmmm! Adrian: And look! This is what we did on Thursday. Look at that wall! It took me about an hour to climb it. Sophie: Amazing! Adrian: I didn t do anything during the day on Friday, but in the evening I watched the comedy My Talented Grandfather: It s so funny! Sophie: And Saturday was your last day. Did you do anything exciting? Adrian: Not much. A friend lent me his skateboard and we practised a bit. But then we had to get ready to leave. Sophie: You re so lucky, Adrian! This is the end of Part Two. Track 6 Part Three Now look at Part three. Listen to two friends talking about buying a present for someone. For each question, choose the right answer A, B, or C. You will hear the conversation twice. Look at questions now. You have twenty seconds. Now listen to the conversation. Olivia: Hi, Joe. Joe: Hi, Olivia. What are you doing? 3

4 Olivia: I m thinking about what to buy Henrietta for her birthday. She really wants a new mobile phone, but that will be too expensive. Joe: What s everyone else giving her? Olivia: Well, her mum s going to give her a new purse. Her dad wanted to give her a sweater, but she already has lots of sweaters, so he decided to look for a nice belt for her instead. Joe: I didn t think of that, and I know she needs a new belt. Olivia: Yes. Oh, and her sister s bought her a DVD of her favourite film. Joe: Oh, Olivia, that s great, too! I can buy her a book about the same film. Olivia: Good idea, and her brother bought her the computer game from the same film, too. He wanted to get her the poster, but he couldn t find it. It s a shame because she really wants it and it s not too expensive. Joe: Well, perhaps you can buy it online. Olivia: No, my parents don t let me shop online. I know that Henrietta s brother couldn t find it in the town centre. I m going to that new shopping centre with my mum on Saturday. I ll look for it there. Joe: Good idea! This is the end of Part Three. Track 7 Part Four Now look at Part Four. You will hear two friends talking about a new sports centre. Listen and complete each question. You will hear the conversation twice. Jim: Hi, Matt. It s Jim. Matt: Hi, Jim. Jim: I m calling to ask you about the new sports centre near your house. Matt: The one on Bridge Road? Yes, it s really great. I go two evenings a week. Jim: Oh, right. What time do you go? Matt: Well, it s open from nine in the morning to nine at night. I go at seven on Tuesdays and eight on Thursdays for about an hour. Jim: Is it open every day? Matt: No. It closes on Mondays, but it s open all the other days of the week. Jim: Do you have to be a member? Matt: No, you don t have to be, but I am. It costs 200 to join, and that s for one year. Or you can pay 3 every time you go, which is more expensive if you go a lot. Jim: Oh, I see. I think I ll ask Mum if I can join then. Have you got their phone number? Matt: Yes, it s Jim: Oh, wait, say that again, please. Matt: Jim: OK, thanks. Oh, one more thing. Do I take the same bus from the High Street that goes to your house? Matt: That s right, the number 21. Jim: OK, great. Thanks, Matt. This is the end of Part Four. Track 8 Part Five Now look at Part Five. You will hear a man talking about a TV documentary. Listen and complete each question. You will hear the information twice. Man: Hey, kids, there s an exciting new documentary that I d like to tell you about. It s called A Dinosaur s Life, and it will be on Channel Four at seven o clock every Tuesday. The show gives lots of information about these interesting animals that lived so long ago. The documentary includes twelve programmes, each one about a different type of dinosaur. The programme will talk about where each dinosaur lived, what it ate, how large it was, and other interesting facts about its life. A team of four scientists will talk about the different dinosaurs in each programme. The scientists travel to the places where the dinosaurs lived in countries all over the world. They will also visit places where dinosaur bones have been found! Each programme will show detailed drawings and pictures of what each dinosaur looked like. Viewers are invited to send questions to the programme s scientists. At the end of each show, the scientists will read a question sent by a viewer and, of course, give an answer! To learn more about each programme and what dinosaurs the scientists will talk about, you can visit the website and you can also post questions on the site. We re looking forward to hearing from you! The Republic of South Africa is called the rainbow nation because people of many different nations live there. There are 11 official languages. The Khoisan were the first people in South Africa. In 1488 the Portuguese explorer Dias sailed around Africa, reaching the Indian Ocean from the Atlantic. This was the first time that a European sailed around Africa. He called the rocky headland the Cape of Storms; it was later renamed the Cape of Good Hope. In 1652 the first Europeans came from the Netherlands and settled in what is now the city of Cape Town. They built a fort and made a garden, to grow fresh vegetables for sailors who stopped there on their long sea voyage between Europe and the East. The first English people came to live in South Africa in The coast is 2,500 kilometres long, with many wide, sandy beaches. The Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet at Cape Agulhas [ - g -l s], which is the furthest south one can go in Africa. It is never very cold in South Africa and many people have never seen snow in real life. There is only one ski resort in the whole country. South Africa is famous for the big five animals: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. You can see them in the 19 national parks. 4

My favourite is Romeo and Juliet (I loved the movie with Leonardo Di Caprio anyway) and I ve heard of Macbeth How many plays did he actually write? G: He wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets (poems). V: Wow. That s a lot of work! I clearly don t know very much about him. So, for a beginner like me, can you recommend some of his plays? G: Well, you know the story of Romeo and Juliet already; it s one of the most popular ones. So I recommend Macbeth. It s a bit scary, so be careful! Also, Much Ado About Nothing is funny and romantic. V: What is Macbeth about? G: It s about a Scottish soldier who will do anything to become king. There are also witches in this story. V: Sounds interesting. Maybe I will try Shakespeare s comedy instead. G: Great. I hope you enjoy your stay in Stratford-Upon-Avon!
