15 Skills in Context weekly tests 18.2 Skills in Context Read the passage Aidan s Race before answering Numbers 1 through 10. Swimmers, take your mark 1. Aidan s Race Aidan took a final stretch, bouncing down to touch his fingers to his toes twice before climbing onto his starting block in lane two. He got into position as the starter checked that all swimmers were motionless. The starting horn sounded, and Aidan dove into the crisp water to start the 50-meter freestyle race. As Aidan swam, he could feel the other swimmers around him. His heart pounded when the swimmer in lane one passed him. Each time he turned his head to take a breath, he tried to see the other swimmers locations. He saw another one pass. That s it, he thought. I ve come in fifth place again. Aidan touched the wall and turned to look at the results on the board. Sure enough, his name was on the board in fifth place. Only the fastest four swimmers would advance to the next round. Aidan hung his head in defeat. He was jealous of the top four swimmers. After the meet, Aidan s mom congratulated him on the race. Mom, he said sadly, I came in fifth place again. I m going to tell Coach Thomas tomorrow that I m quitting the team. After school the following day, Aidan s mother drove him to the pool. Aidan walked up to the coach. With eyes downcast, he announced, I ve decided to quit the team, Coach. Coach Thomas shocked Aidan when he declared, I don t think you should. Aidan just knew the coach would be relieved not to have to train him anymore. Why would he want Aidan to stay on the team? He hadn t won a single race. 1 take your mark: get in your starting position Story Structure, Theme, Allusion, Target Vocabulary 15

16 weekly tests 18.3 Skills in Context The coach continued, Aidan, you are a determined swimmer. You ve improved tremendously this season. You defeat yourself at the meets by giving up before the end of a race. You just need to acquire some confidence. Keep swimming and stay focused. You ll get the results you want. Aidan decided to stay on the team. At practice, he was more focused than ever. His times improved. He was feeling more confident at the beginning of the next meet, but would it be enough? Could he win a race? Just before his heat 2, Coach Thomas gave Aidan a pep talk. Remember, stay focused on your swimming. Do not pay attention to the other swimmers. You can do this, Aidan. The starter called, Swimmers, take your mark. As always, Aidan took a final stretch, bouncing down to touch his fingers to his toes twice before climbing onto his starting block, this time in lane six. As the starter made a final check of the swimmers, Aidan visualized himself in the water. He saw himself swimming strong and steady. He took a deep breath, filling his lungs with air. The starting horn sounded, and Aidan dove forcefully into the pool. 2 heat: early race to narrow down the field for a final contest Story Structure, Theme, Allusion, Target Vocabulary 16

17 weekly tests 18.4 Skills in Context Aidan felt confident as he took his first few strokes through the water. As he turned his head to the side to take a breath, he saw the swimmer in the lane next to him. Suddenly, his heart beat faster and he lost concentration. Not again, he thought. Aidan forced himself to remember Coach Thomas s words. I can do this. The other swimmer disappeared from Aidan s mind. Aidan thought about the story of Odysseus, the ancient hero who avoided monsters at sea to make it safely home. Soon, Aidan had forgotten the other swimmers and was focused only on his goal, finishing the race. Aidan remained focused on his own swimming all the way to the pool wall. He stretched out his arm, touching the underwater sensor. Immediately, he turned his head to look at the results. He saw his name, A. Pérez, in third place. He d done it! He d made it to the next round! He beamed with pride. Coach Thomas quickly caught up with Aidan. I did it! I made it to the next round, but how will I keep up with these swimmers? They re even better. They.... Aidan, Coach Thomas interrupted. Forget about the other swimmers. Swim for yourself. I believe in you. As he waited for the next race to begin, Aidan thought about Coach Thomas s words. He knew he could do this. He would swim for himself, and he would do well. This time he knew it was true. 29 ELL B L A C K L I N E M A S T E R E L L Selection Summary Hercules was the son of Zeus, king of the gods. Zeus loved his son. Hera was Zeus s wife. She wanted Zeus to love only her. When Hercules was a baby, Hera dropped snakes into his cradle. But Hercules killed the snakes. So Hera devised a new plan. She plotted to coerce Hercules into using his great strength for harm. Zeus got upset with Hercules. He sent Hercules away to a kingdom, to protect the king and the people. But Hera wanted Hercules out of the way for good. So she got the king to give Hercules dangerous tasks. First, Hercules had to kill a lion. Then, he had to kill a monster with nine heads. Finally, he had to acquire some apples from a garden. A dragon protected the garden. Hercules didn t know how to get the apples. But he was resourceful. So he went to Atlas. Atlas owned the garden. Atlas held the weight of the world on his shoulders. Hercules said he would hold the world if Atlas would get the apples. Atlas agreed. Hercules returned to the king with the apples. He also vowed to only use his strength to help others. Zeus was pleased with his son. English Language Learners 29
