She was the prettiest one there, fashionable,gracious, turned to look at her, asked who she was, begged to be introduced. All the cabinet officials wanted to waltz with her. The minister took notice of her. She danced madly, wildly, drunk with pleasure giving no thought to anything in the triumph of her beauty, the pride of her success, in a kind of happy cloud composed of all adulation, of all the admiring glances, of all the awakened longings, of a sense of complete victory that is so sweet to a woman's heart. She left around four o'clock in the morning. Her husband, since midnight, had been dozing in a small empty sitting room with three other gentlemen whose wives were having too good a time. He threw over her shoulders the wraps he had brought for going home, modest garments of everyday life whose shabbiness clashed with the stylishness of her evening clothes. She felt this and longed to escape, unseen by the other women who were draped in expensive fur. Loisel held her back. Loisel held her back.but she wouldn't listen to him and went rapidly down the stairs. When they were on the street, they didn't find a car carriage; and they set out to hunt for one, hailing drivers whom they saw going by at a distance. They walked toward the Seine, disconsolate and shivering. Finally on the docks they found one of those carriage that one sees in Paris only after nightfall, as if they were ashamed to show their drabness during daylight hours. The cab dropped them at their door in the Rue des Martyrs. For her, it was all over,for him there was the thought that he would have to be in the Ministry at ten. 1

2 Read the text and answer the following questions. 1. What made the evening a sense of complete victory for Ms Loisel? People were flattering her and they wanted to introduce themselves. She was pretty and glorious as she has always dreamed to be. 2.How do you know Ms Loisel's husband loves and cares about her? He brought her wraps and he threw it on her shoulders so she doesn t catch a cold. He told her he will catch a cab to go home. 3.From which point of view has the text been told? The third person point of view. 4." She felt this and longed to escape, unseen by the other women who were draped in expensive fur." What does this line tell you about Ms Loisel? This indicates that Ms Loisel is never satisfied with her life. She doesn t want people to know that she is poor. 5. Ms Loisel doesn't belong to the same social class of the people who were in the party. Find two evidences from the text. a. She escaped from the women who were draped in expensive fur. b. Her and her husband were going home in a cab. 6. What's the purpose of the author? The writer is writing to entertain 2

Next, mom quickly browned the chicken and patiently let it cook through. She works fast. I eagerly waited for my next job, which was to gently sprinkle spices into the soup. But, I accidentally poured in too much cumin. I quietly told my mom my mistake, and she sweetly told me, as a child, she had coincidently made the same mistake. Now I realize cooking is not as hard as I thought. 4. Write two complex sentences using adverbs. a. 3

6 There are four kinds of sentences in the English language. 1. Imperative- gives a command (.) 2. Declarative- makes a statement (.) 3. Interrogative- asks a question (?) 4. Exclamatory- expresses strong feeling (!) 9.Read each sentence and label the kind of sentence it is. Example: Are you done with your homework? Interrogative 1. Please light the candles on the cake. Imperative 2. There are eight kittens under my house. Declarative 3. How far is the mall from here? Interrogative 4. I never want you to do that again! Imperative 5. I brought my sweater to keep myself warm.
