1 Winter Reading Assignment AP Literature and Composition Actively read Frankenstein Complete Literature Data Sheet- Attached Actively read the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Tips: Think about the connection between Coleridge s poem and Shelley s novel Write speculatively about the connection between Frankenstein and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Focus composition construct clear, competent paragraphs that use transitions, topic sentences, support sentences, and lines/quotes from works [SC13 & SC14 ]. Assignment 1: Poetry Analysis- Examine the Text [SC2] a. In a well written essay (1-2 pages: double spaced), examine each of the following as found in the poem: i. The poem as a narrative ii. The narrative voice iii. Themes of the poem iv. The supernatural v. Imagery Assignment 3: Stylistic Prose Techniques [SC2] a. As you read, notice notice the stylistic techniques that the author uses in order to communicate more effectively and powerfully. b. Examples of stylistic techniques are point of view, tone, diction, syntax, narrative pace, humor, satire, figurative language, imagery, irony, selection of detail, and many more. c. Prepare a list of ten examples of powerful prose techniques. d. Define the term in your own words, cite the example from the text, and provide a brief analysis of how the author uses the technique effectively. e. Use the format as noted on the sample; it must be typed. Do not forget page numbers. f. Use appropriate MLA format. g. This assignment should be 1-2 pages double spaced. Assignment 2: Reader Response (attached) [SC7] a. Your book is divided into six parts (1. Introduction, Preface, Letters; 2. Chapters 1-5; 3. Chapters 6-9; 4. Chapters 10-15; 5. Chapters 16-20; 6. Chapters 21-24). After you finish reading each part, write a reader response/reaction to that section. These responses should be typed and limited to the space provide on the Reader Response Sheet sample. b. Do not write a plot summary. I want you to react to what happens in the novel and to the characters and their personalities and motivations. Do not forget the page numbers. Assignment 4: Prose Analysis (attached) [SC2, SC3] a. Choose one passage from the first half of the novel and one passage from the second half. b. These passages should be several sentences long to get some feel or idea of the author s style. These must be typed or photocopied (reduced to fit) on the Prose Analysis Sheet. Do not forget to use the page number. c. In the analysis section of the Prose analysis Sheet, write an analysis of the prose. Write about diction, imagery, syntax, choice of detail, figurative language, tone, and any other tools of the writer that you consider significant. Include what makes this passage memorable to you and what makes this passage representative of the author s style. This assignment must be PRINTED and turned into me on the first day of class, Thursday, January 3rd; any late work will go in the gradebook as a 0. If you are absent the day that it is due, the assignment is expected to be ed to me prior to the start of class (I will look at the time stamp). It must be typed; no hand-written assignments will be accepted. None will be returned to you to type. If you wait until the last minute to type this work and your computer/printer misbehaved, you will have no grace period. Any work that does not conform to the format of the assignment will be penalized. 4 Reader Response Journal Sheet *You will create one of these per section. You will end up with SIX to turn in* Critical, Analytical Response Personal Response *No use of first person* Consider the following questions: (naturally you would not answer all of them for every entry these are just suggestions) Discuss the language in a specific passage. How does the diction contribute to the overall tone? Consider connotation. How is the personality of a specific character established within a specific passage or stanza? Consider the use of dialogue, foils, and/or actions. Setting is often a pivotal factor in the development of theme. Consider a notable literary technique in the text. Is there irony, satire, symbolism, allusions, etc? What is the impact of the technique on the overall work? Are there any predominant images that keep recurring throughout the work? Discuss how some of the characters or situations fit into the typical archetypal categories. Explain the effect of any unusual organizational or rhetorical strategies in the work multiple narrators; pacing elements (flashbacks, intercalary chapters, time lapses, etc.); unusual punctuation or use of italics; chapter divisions; syntax, like repetition of words and phrases or rhetorical questions; letters about events. What are the key characteristics of the speaker or the narrator? *You may use first person* Personal response to something you read in the assigned chapters. - In this space, write your personal response. Tell how the quotation or events surrounding this quotation make you feel. Use the pronoun I here. You may make connections to your life, to other works of literature you have read, songs, etc.
