3 Jim is my friend who lives in Canada. When he visited me last summer, he said to me, It is very hot. Do you have hot summer days like today this year, Satoshi? I answered, Yes. I think this year is hotter than last year. Then Jim asked me, Do you know the word Global Warming? Jim and I began to talk about Global Warming while we tried to get information from the Internet. Why do we have Global Warming? The sun ( leaves, but, warm, makes, the heat, the Earth) the Earth soon. So the temperature has been good for every living thing on the Earth. But when we burn fossil fuels to get energy, we have much CO2 in the air. The CO2 absorbs the heat and the Earth gets warmer. On the Internet we found the temperature ( A ) up 0.6 from 1900 to Temperature differences from 1900 Year Difference() Jim said, If the Earth gets warmer, ( ) will happen? I thought for a minute and said, We will have only a little ice in the Antarctic and have too much water in the sea. He said, That s right. Then ( ) will happen? I thought for another minute and said, The level of sea water will rise and many beaches will be under water. He said, If the level of sea water rises, many towns and villages near beaches will also be under water in the future. I was surprised to ( ) his words and said, Global Warming is a very big ( ). Jim also said, In Canada we look after forests very carefully because trees absorb much CO2 in the air. We are ( B ) many things in our lives to stop Global Warming. After we talked about Global Warming for some time, we began to think how to stop it. These are three ideas we found on the Internet. 1. If we don t watch TV for an hour in a day, we will cut 4.8 kg of CO2 in a year. 2. If we don t use the air conditioner for an hour in a day, we will cut 6.6 kg of CO2 in a year. 3. If we don t use 40 water and use 30 water to wash the dishes, we will cut 19.8 kg of CO2 in a year. 4 ( ) ( A )( B ) 5 go come stay try get ( ) 2 ( ) who which what why ( )( ) The Earth gets warmer and the temperature rises every year because a lot of CO2 is in the sea all over the world. If the Earth gets warmer every year, all the towns and villages in the world will be under water in the future. A lot of people in Canada were very interested in Global Warming but did nothing to look after forests. If we don t watch TV for an hour in a day to stop Global Warming, we can cut 0.4 kg of CO2 in a month. ( )( ) We make a lot of CO2 in the ( ) around the Earth when we burn fossil fuels to get energy. It absorbs heat and the Earth gets warmer. I was surprised to know that many towns and villages near beaches will be under water in the future. After talking about Global Warming, we ( ) three things to stop it on the Internet. A B - 4 -
5 Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Many people agree with this idea, but some find it is hard to eat in the morning. Junior and senior high school students in Saitama were asked about breakfast. About 70 % of them said they ate every morning and about 10 % of the students said they always skipped breakfast. Students who don t eat breakfast often say, I don t have time to eat or I m not hungry in the morning. People think in different ways about breakfast, but let s find out why it is so important. If you look at the word breakfast, you will find that it is made up of two words. The first word break means to stop, and the second word fast means a period of eating no food. So, the morning meal, breakfast, means to stop the period of eating no food. After dinner, your body keeps working and using energy, even while you are sleeping. In the morning, you need to eat breakfast to get your energy back. People who eat just before going to bed or people who go to bed very late may not want to eat breakfast in the morning because they don t feel hungry. But eating breakfast plays a big part in everyday life. If you eat breakfast in the morning, you will have energy and can begin your day feeling good. If you do not eat breakfast and always feel hungry, you will not have enough energy to do much. For example, you may not want to have fun with your friends. It may also be difficult for you to concentrate in your first period English class. Some experts say that students who eat breakfast every morning do better in class than students who skip breakfast. It is good for students to think about breakfast, so some schools started to teach about it in Japan. Here is one example. In an elementary school in Aomori, fourth year students had a special morning class. They made their own breakfast with their parents and ate together. Before they began cooking, they listened to an expert and learned how to make a healthy breakfast. After the class was finished, one student said, I m going to have breakfast every morning now because I learned how important it is for me. You may be very busy every day. Some of you may think you don t need to take the time to eat in the morning, but skipping breakfast is not a good idea. To make your day happy and healthy, it s important for you to eat breakfast. Fifteen minutes for breakfast is much better for you than fifteen minutes of extra sleep. meal skipped period energy plays a big part concentrate experts elementary school healthy extra - 5 -
6 1 The writer is trying to say in this story that we should eat three meals every day. that dinner is more important than breakfast. that breakfast is very important. that you should eat breakfast in fifteen minutes. When the students in Saitama were asked about breakfast, about 70 % of the students said they skipped breakfast every morning. about 70 % of the students said they sometimes ate breakfast. about 10 % of the students said they ate breakfast every morning. about 10 % of the students said they did not eat breakfast. Breakfast is the meal that breaks the fast because many people eat fast food in the morning. you eat after a long period of eating no food. many Japanese young people stop eating in the morning. people cannot run fast without food. When you get up in the morning, you have to get your energy back by eating food. you need to stay in your bed fifteen minutes longer. you never want to eat anything. you must know how to make a healthy breakfast. a special morning class ( )( ) 1 Having breakfast is very important for most of us, but some people think that it is not ( ) to eat breakfast every day. Some students skip their breakfast because they don t have time to eat or don t want to eat anything in the morning. You are usually ( ) when you get up in the morning. This is because your body uses energy while you are sleeping during the night. When you go to school without eating breakfast, you don t feel good and don t want to have fun with your friends. It is said that students ( ) eat breakfast every morning do better in class. People think in different ways about eating breakfast, but breakfast is an important meal for your health and plays a big part in your everyday life. To have a healthy life, you should try to ( ) breakfast every morning
