1 Newsletter of Harbor City Wings Melbourne, Florida Gold Wing Road Riders Association SEP 2012 Hey everyone, Just wanted to let everyone know that we had a great time in Mt. Dora during the Segway trip. No one crashed which is always a good thing. We had 18 people go and enjoy the Segways and the scenery. The day was overcast so we were not sweating like crazy. We ate lunch afterword's at a restaurant called the Frog and the Monkey. After that Deb Dalton forced us to the local ice cream place where again we were forced to endure the ice cream. After the ice cream we drove over to see Mike and Steve at the TRC course. They were both there and behaving themselves. Barb and I stayed in a bed and breakfast for our first time ever, while everybody else headed home. We enjoyed the time greatly. Barb was able to find some other things to do in the area that our members might like. For example there is a float plane ride across the lake in Tavares. Meetings - First Tuesday of each month. 5 Safety Educator Locked Brakes Sometimes (rarely) this is the fastest way to stop By: James R. Davis The coefficient of friction is greatest for our tires at the point just prior to a slide, and it decreases by 20-30% as soon as you start sliding. This, in part, because a sliding tire generates so much heat at the contact patch that the rubber there begins to liquefy. [Actually, dynamic coefficient of friction is always lower than static coefficient of friction.] (Curiously, it turns out that asphalt actually melts as well and your skidding tire cuts a trench in it as a result.) Clearly, then, in order to make the fastest stop possible you want to use enough brake to 'almost' make the tires slide. You do not want to ever 'lock' your brakes, then, right? Well, this is true in almost all cases. True enough, at least, that it is held to be gospel in almost every discussion of stopping a motorcycle that I have ever participated in. But there are times when you can stop faster if you lock those brakes. Before getting into the details about this let me make a few points that should be obvious: If you lock your front brake you lose ALL steering control. If you lock your rear brake you lose stability for about 80% of your motorcycle. If you can stop fast enough without locking your brakes you should do so. The odds of dumping your bike are many times greater if you lock your brakes (either of them) than if you do not. Stopping performance is a function of your brakes, your tires, and the ROAD SURFACE. So, when does locking one or more of your brakes make sense? ONLY if you must stop as quickly as possible to avoid a major accident and the road surface is not firm! That is, in order to avoid serious injury when riding on snow, loose gravel, or sand! Further, ONLY IF YOU ARE driving in a straight line!!! It should be obvious that because the odds of dumping your bike goes way up whenever you lock a wheel, you would almost always want to use a more gentle touch on your brakes - indeed, in any situation that does not call for fastest stop possible. When you stop the rotation of your tire in a soft surface environment (like snow, sand or loose gravel), that wheel will not merely ride over the surface. It will plow through the material and in so doing it creates a 'dam' of the material in front of itself. This 'dam' grows and provides rather a substantial, and growing, amount of resistance that is a greater (by far) stopping force than whatever traction your rotating tire could provide by rolling over the material. Since you will lose all steering control if your front brake is locked, you must straighten the bike to vertical before you grab your binders or you will dump the bike! If you are able to allow your rear tire to continue to spin while doing this then you should as this will provide gyro- T-CLOCK CHECK : Tires and wheels, Controls, Lights and electrics, Oil and fluids, Chassis, Kickstand. 5
6 scopic stability for the majority of your bike until you are moving very slowly. Even in a situation in which failing to stop soonest puts your life in jeopardy, locking BOTH brakes is NOT the way to go, in my opinion. (I don't think it EVER makes sense to aggressively use your rear brake.) Mind you, locking your front brake to stop as quickly as possible is ONLY TRUE if the road surface is loose!!! Any normal road surface condition requires that you NOT lock either of your brakes in order to stop quickest. Copyright by The Master Strategy Group, all rights reserved. (James R. Davis is a recognized expert witness in the fields of Motorcycle Safety/Dynamics.) This safety information article was taken from msgroup.org, a motorcycle safety forum. 7 Ride Coordinator MEMORIES..,,We all have them. Good or bad. We cherish them all and every now and then take them out and look at them. Just like old photos from our past. They might be memories of our childhood birthdays or they could be of Christmases of long ago. High school, sweethearts, marriage, or the birth of our children we all have made memories. Now in the twilight of our years we are making new MEMORIES. GW MEMORIES. Meaning, that we are meeting and making new friends and new interest at this time of our life. Getting together at meetings, kicktires, and rallies. MEMORY; Florida rally in Kissimmee Mike Duquette falls over his trailer tongue and hurts his shoulder. He tells us that it is starting to stiffen and get sore WELLL good friends that we are, we tell him to keep moving it around. Mike, knowing that we all have medical knowledge, proceeds to rotate the shoulder... all weekend. On Monday at the doctors, he finds out it is the worst thing he could have done,oh BOY. MEMORY; The birth of the Melbourne Monkeys. Thanks to the help of Moe Dalton. I will go no further on the subject. MEMORY;Hawaian theme The guys looked great in their hula skirts and coconut bras. (Want to pet the monkey?)charlotte Mercer, maybe a tad too much wine and her ''Monkey..Monkey,Monkey'. MEMORY;Chapter banner-first prize. Chapter collage-first prize (twice) Most memorable winning, first place at two different talent shows with our presentation of the American flag. MEMORY; Sitting outside the motel rooms in the evening sharing the days events, lots of jokes, exchanging opinions with good friends, food and wine. MEMORY; The long bike rides to wing ding. The week ends spent in Savannah and Charleston, drinking the wonderful history of these two cities. The fun trip to the keys. All the while with G.W friends and making G.W. MEMORIES. These are just a few of the memories for me that have been made the last fourteen years. Memories made from kicktire, meetings, Bike week and the unforgettable hot dog sales. As I have said before, each of us joins an organization for different reason, but I believe the main reason is for friendship and in reaching that goal.memories are made. They are made each and every time you join us at a meeting, kicktire, or any other function. So, when you hear a story being told an all the laughter that follows, make sure you know what the laughing is about because you were there. And finally a GREAT MEMORY was made, Sunday August 19 when sixteen of us took a Segway tour of Mt. Dora. WHAT A DAY. The weather was beautiful and the town well no words can begin to describe how fantastic it was. But the thing that crossed my mind was the blanket of friendship that covered us all. You see, about ninety percent of us were nervous, a little scared about getting on the seaways and making fools of ourselves. But it wasn't to be, and with a lot of encouragement from each other and practice, we were soon rolling all over Mt.Dora and another wonderful memory was made. THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.So get up and get out, join us.. your GW family. Trust me you will make some wonderful memories Lynn Anderson 7

16 While on vacation in Tennessee, Ray and Rachel Moyer came upon a new BMW proving ground for next generation concept motorcycles. As you can see from the photos, the Germans have attempted to disguise their new and secret designs. Actually, they have done a rather good job of it. This is a TEST! Who is this fellow? He is one of our very own. At the September Meeting this mystery man will be revealed. 16
17 Paraprosdokians (Winston Churchill loved them) are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected; frequently humorous. 1. Where there's a will, I want to be in it. 2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list. 3. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak. 4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong. 5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public. 6. War does not determine who is right - only who is left. 7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit.. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. 8. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research. 9. I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you. 10. In filling out an application, where it says, 'In case of emergency, Notify:' I put 'DOCTOR'. 11. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy. 12. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice. 13. I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target. 15. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car. 16. You're never too old to learn something stupid. 17. I'm supposed to respect my elders, but its getting harder and harder for me to find one now. 17
18 Two little ladies were shopping in the mall when Joanne smiled: "My cat can really play chess!" With a shocking expression, Angelina praised Joanne's cat: "Really? It must be very smart!" Just when Angelina finished her sentence, Joanne said:" Well... Actually, I don't know about that. I usually win three out of four times." An irish farmer sees a welsh farmer with two sheep under his arms.. and he asks.."are you gonna shear them?.."nope"..says the welshman...."they"re both for me".. A blonde, a brunette, and a redhead all work at the same office for a female boss who always goes home early. "Hey, girls," says the brunette, "Let's go home early tomorrow. She'll never know." So the next day, they all leave early right after the boss does. The brunette gets some extra gardening done. The redhead goes to the salon. The blonde goes home to find her husband cheating with her female boss! So, the blonde quietly sneaks out of the house. "That was fun," says the brunette the next day. "We should do it again sometime." "No way," says the blonde. "I almost got caught." A special thanks to our members who submit articles. We love the support and the good information.
