2 Mood Mood is how the writer's words make us feel. Often the setting can help develop and establish the mood of a story or poem. A vivid description of the setting will help us to see, hear, smell, taste, and touch the images; setting the mood. 2

9 What Is Tone? You probably know that your tone of voice affects the meaning of what you say. Say each statement aloud using different tones. Have others describe the tone. Statement OK, I ll do it in a minute. That was the best meal I ve ever had. Could you please keep your voice down? Whatever. 10 The Power of Tone You ve just discovered that tone, or a speaker s attitude toward a topic, can have a big impact on listeners. Analyzing tone can help you: understand a speaker s message gain a sense of that person s personality or mood know how to respond to that person determine how your words might be perceived by others 10
