1 HONORS ENGLISH 10 Fulton 10 th Grade HONORS SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS You will be working on 2 summer reading assignments. Before returning to school next school year, you will need to read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and complete assignment # You will also need to choose another book from the list and complete assignment # This organizer is intended to guide your reading and focus your thoughts in preparation for the discussions, summer reading test and writing assignments you will engage in when you return in August. You can use this on the test. Assignment is due: the first day of school: August 22, Assignment #1: The House on Mango Street- by Sandra Cisneros This assignment does not need to be typed; it can be handwritten and stapled together for submission. You may use the graphic organizer here to write directly on, or you may type it up. Simply label everything and print it out for submission on the first day of school. This assignment is designed to encourage active reading habits by requiring you to pause and reflect after you read. It is important to note that The House on Mango Street is written as a series of vignettes. A VIGNETTE (French, "little vine") is a short composition showing considerable skill, especially such a composition designed with little or no plot or larger narrative structure. Often vignettes are descriptive or evocative in their nature. Cisneros writes vignettes about her life rather than using normal chronological plot sequencing. Each chapter is a vignette or a snapshot of her life as she remembers it. SECTION 1: Setting Instructions: Esperanza s reactions to her physical environment often reveal aspects of her character. Choose three large or small elements of Esperanza s physical environment (e.g., houses, neighborhoods, city, school, trees, concrete, windows) and follow them as they repeat throughout the novel. In the first column, write the quotations (with their page numbers) that describe your selected elements. In the second column, write a short analysis that explores Esperanza s reaction to the element. 3 SECTION 2: Female Characters Please examine the similarities and differences between Esperanza and three other female characters in the book. 4 SECTION 3: Mood Mood is the emotional effect that a text creates for the audience, the way the reader feels when reading a work. It is the atmosphere that an author creates in a literary work with the intention of evoking a certain emotion or feeling from the reader. Mood may be created by a combination of such elements as setting, diction, figurative language, and syntax. 6 SECTION 4: Cisneros Style in My Name (10-11) Cisneros writes in a style that can be considered prose (novel-like), but she also employs literary devices frequently found in poetry. Re-read the chapter My Name, and find two examples of imagery, two examples of connotation, and two examples of repetition and list those in the left-hand column. In the right-hand column, discuss how each example creates a specific mood. Concrete details of imagery How these examples create a specific mood. 8 SECTION 6: Final Analysis The House on Mango Street addresses numerous social issues such as housing, education, the environment, prejudice, the treatment of women, poverty, and immigrant struggles. Select three (3) key social issues that are represented in the book, provide a brief explanation of how this issue is addressed in the story and two concrete details for each. 9 Assignment # 2 : Student Book Choice Selection Your purpose for reading is to discover which elements of language these authors use and to what effect. You are ultimately studying STYLE and the components that comprise it. Style involves the author s choice and arrangement of words in sentences (diction and syntax), the use of sensory and/or figurative language, the tone, and the mood. Look for such things as the length and complexity of the sentences; the use of words that are unusual or sophisticated or colloquial; and the use of elements such as allusion and irony. As you read think of adjectives that you could use to describe the author s style. Honors English 10 Suggested Reading List: CHOOSE ONE A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas Assignment: Write a brief summary followed by your reaction to the novel/nonfiction book and your brief identification of its major strengths/themes. In other words: What happens? What did you think? Why do think this work is (or at least is considered) important? (1-2 pages max.) Create a Vocabulary Journal of words whose meanings are unfamiliar to you. Choose 15 words from your book. For each word use the following format to study the word. Write the word Copy the clause in which it appears and provide the page number. Find a synonym for the word (use the thesaurus). 4. Write the dictionary definition that seems to apply to the way the word is used in the text. 5. Identify how the word functions in the text (part of speech: noun, verb, adjective, adverb) and record its alternate forms.
