4 Giving Directions In this programme, we look at language you can use when asking for and diving directions. Look at different expressions below. 1. Asking the directions Can you tell me the way to the post office? Excuse me. Do you know where to the bank is? Pardon me, but can you direct me to the station? Excuse me, could you tell me where the nearest hospital is? How do I get to Dr. William s office? How can I get there? Where is the nearest bus stop? Please tell me where Erawan Hotel is? How can I get to the theatre? I d like to know where the park is? Can you tell me how to get to the bookstore? Could you tell me where the Banyan tree is? Can you help me please? I want to get to Phimai Sancturary. Is this way to the market? 2. Giving Directions Go straight ahead. Go straight on. Go straight ahead for three blocks. Turn left. go left. it s on the left. take a left take the second (turning) on the left. Turn right. go right It s on the right take a right take the second (turning) on the right. Follow this street. Go along the street. Gross over Silom Road. Cross the bridge. Keep going along this street. Go down this street and turn to the left. Go back straight down this road for about ten minutes. At the junction of May street, Turn right. Go past the police station. The library will be on the bend on the right-hand side. The bank is on / at the corner of the street. It s just down the street.

5 Asking Where to Find the Nearest Mall A: I need some help. B: What s up? A: I m looking for the mall. B: You can t find it? A: I ve looked everywhere. B: The mall is right next to the movie theater. A: Where is that? B: You ll find it on Washington Boulevard. A: In that plaza? B: Yes. It s in that plaza. A: I know where it is now. B: I m glad I could help. Transportation In one way or another, we all use some form of transportation to get where we want to go. Listen to the words below avenue 1. bicycle lane 2. bus 3. bus pass 4. bus stop 5. cable car 6. highway 7. intersection 8. motorist 9. pedestrian 10. street 11. subway 12. subway line 13. subway station 14. taxi 15. taxi stand 16. ticket machine 17. train station 18. truck

6 Asking about Place/Location Here are some sample phrases and sentences for asking about location Where is the bank? It's on Main Street. It's next to the post office. It's between the bakery and the barber shop. It's on the corner of Ninth Street and Pine (Street). Where's Lagoon? It's in Davis County, near Kaysville. It's on I-15, between Farmington and Kaysville. It's ten miles north of Salt Lake City. Directions How do you get to the sporting goods store? : on foot First, go down State Street until you get to 4th South. Then, turn left. Then, go down 4th South for three blocks. It's on the right side of the street next to Wendy's. : by car

7 Take State Street to 4th South. At 4th South, turn left. Stay on 4th South for about three blocks. The sporting goods store will be on the right, next to Wendy's. How do you get to (your house in) Lehi? Take I-15 south about 20 miles. After you cross the mountain, watch for the signs to Lehi. Take the first Lehi exit. When you get off the freeway, make a right turn at the stop sign. Follow the road (15th East) for five blocks. Make a left turn on Royal Drive. Continue on Royal Drive until you see the big oak tree. My house is on the left hand side. It's a two-story, red brick house with a large front yard. You can't miss it Here are some phrases and expressions for asking directions in English. 1. Excuse me. Is there a grocery store Yeah. There's one right across the around here? street. 2. Can you tell me how to get to Phoenix? Sorry. I don't live around here. 3. Where's Tanner's Leather Shop? It's on the corner of Holly and Vine. 4. How do you get to the bank? Next to the library. Go straight down this street for two blocks. Turn left when you get to Maple Street. Stay on Maple for half a block. It's on the left hand side. After you have learned this programme, get some more practice with the conversations of this topic.

8 Asking Where to Find Places to Eat A: I just moved into the neighborhood. B: Do you know where everything is around town? A: I could use your help with something. B: Exactly what can I do for you? A: I m looking for somewhere to eat. B: What kind of restaurant do you want to eat at? A: I want Chinese food. B: I know of a fabulous Chinese restaurant down the street. A: How do I get there? B: It s just a few blocks away. A: Would you like to go to lunch? B: That would be great. Asking Where to Buy Lunch A: Let's have some lunch; do you know of a great restaurant somewhere? B: I'm hungry, too. What types of food sound good? A: Maybe just a quick sandwich, salad, or something. B: I have a great idea of where you might like to go. A: Can we walk there? B: It's on the second floor. May I join you? A: Of course! Let's go. B: Let's hurry. I'm starving! Where to Find a Church A: Do you need help with something? B: I m trying to find something. A: What are you looking for? B: I m trying to find a church. A: What kind of church is it? B: It s a Catholic church. A: There s a Catholic Church right on Lake Avenue. B: Is that right? A: Yes, and it s huge, so you can t miss it. B: Where exactly is it? A: It s right at Lake and Woodbury. B: Thanks for your help.

9 Asking Where to Find a Movie Theater A: Could you help me? B: What s wrong? A: I think I m lost. B: Where are you going? A: I need to find the movie theater. B: You re not sure where it is? A: I really don t know. B: You do know where the mall is, right? A: I know exactly where that is. B: There s a movie theater inside the mall. A: When did they get a theater? B: They just built it. Where's the Theater? Steve: Hey, Ranae. Do you happen to know where the movie theater is downtown? The one near the hospital. Ranae: Yeah. Why do you want to know? Steve: Well, on Monday, I asked Jennifer out on a date for this coming Saturday night. Ranae: Wow. You've really been seeing a lot of her lately. Sounds great. Okay, write down these directions so you don't get lost. Steve: Okay, go ahead. Ranae: First, drive down 1st street going west, cross the river, and keep going straight until Pine Street. Steve: Until Pine Street, right? Ranae: Right. Then turn left, and the movie theater is the second building on the right. It's next to the church. Steve: Second building on the right. Got it. Now, can you recommend any nice restaurants? Ranae: Yeah. The Pink Flamingo serves excellent Spanish food. Steve: Well where's that? Ranae: Well, starting from the movie theater, go south on Pine Street, cross 2nd Street, and drive to 3rd Street. You'll see a parking lot on the left side of the street. Okay so far? Steve: A parking lot on the left. Okay. Then what? Ranae: Okay, then turn left on 3rd Street and drive east. The Pink Flamingo is the building just before the river on the left side. I think it's open weekdays from 10:30 in the morning to 11:30 at night, but it stays open until midnight on the weekends. Steve: Okay, I think I've driven by there before. Oh, last thing. Where can I buy some flowers? We're going out to celebrate Jennifer's birthday.
