In this section I will continue teaching you how to analyze sentences. We will be focusing on analysis of compound sentences in this section. 2 I attended a wedding of my cousin sister in Udaipur and there is an incident that is worth telling you all. The day I reached her house, my sister was in a complete chaos. When I asked her about why she looked so worried, she told me that she could not find her dress anywhere! The wedding was supposed to take place in about two days and my sister had lost her WEDDING DRESS! I told her to go and check with her servants, they said that they had not seen it anywhere. We began searching her whole house; my sister and I were exhausted by evening so we sat down to have some rest. Just as my sister and I sat down on the bed in her room, my sister noticed something lying under the bed. She got down on her knees and looked under the bed where she saw the dress was lying! We were taken aback and I asked her who she thinks could have done this. She then remembered that it was she who was trying on this dress the day before in order to imagine how she would look on the wedding day. Her mother had knocked the door; she hid the dress under the bed and went with her mother. We both started laughing uncontrollably and after we laughed a good deal, went down to have some dinner. Carefully look at the sentences that are highlighted. You will notice that in all the highlighted sentences, there are two main clauses joined by a conjunction, in some cases a subordinate clause is also there. Such sentences which have two main (or principal) clauses joined by a conjunction are called Compound Sentences. Let us now focus on how to analyze a compound sentence: Let us take a compound sentence that is It is dark outside and I am still at work. In this sentence, try to find out the main clauses and the conjunction. Main clause 1: it is dark outside Main clause 2: I am still at work Conjunction: and Now taking another sentence I attended a wedding of my cousin sister in Udaipur and there is an incident that is worth telling you all Main clause 1: I attended a wedding of my cousin sister in Udaipur Main clause 2: 2 / 5

3 there is an incident that is worth telling you all Conjunction: and There are four kinds of conjunctions that are used to join independent clauses, these are: 1. Cumulative Conjunction 3 / 5

A cumulative conjunction is that conjunction which is used to attach one clause. e to another. Examples for this are: and, as well as, not only but also, nor etc.

(You must note the inverted word order in the clause can he speak.)" 2. Alternative Conjunction An alternative conjunction, as the name suggests, is used to present two alternatives before us. Examples are: either or, neither nor, otherwise, or else etc. You should neither borrow nor lend. You can have either juice or cold drink. You must submit the article now, otherwise you will be rebuked. Come away from the door, or else they will find you. 3. Adversative Conjunction An adversative conjunction is used when you wish to draw a contrast between two facts. Examples are: but, still, yet, whereas etc. She is lazy whereas her sister is very energetic. She is good-looking but not intellectual. He is wealthy, yet he looks dejected. 4. Illative 4 / 5

Examples are: so, therefore, for etc. He has good influence over the judges, so he may get the decision in his favor. He may understand your problem for he is a sensible man. The two angles are equal; therefore the opposite angles must be equal.
