5 CHAPTERS 1-5 After Reading 1. Re-read the descriptions of Green Lake on pages 3-4. Write at least three sentences about what has changed in the past hundred years. (ex.: There used to be a large lake but now it is just a flat wasteland.) 2. Why are all the men in the Yelnats family named Stanley? 3. What happened to the first Stanley Yelnats (Stanley s great-great-grandfather) while he was traveling from New York to California? Why does Stanley s mother say he was lucky? 4. Why do you think Theodore likes to be called Armpit? 5. Think about this quote: If Stanley and his father weren t always hopeful, then it wouldn t hurt so much every time their hopes were crushed. Agree or disagree with the following statement, writing at least three sentences to support your opinion: It is bad for unlucky people to be hopeful. 5

6 CHAPTERS 1-5 Extension Activities Choose only one of the activities below to complete. 1. In the picture frame below, draw a detailed picture of one character from the story. Write a description of that character s appearance and personality, including as many details as you can from the story. 2. Re-read what Stanley brought with him to Camp Green Lake (page 6) and the supplies he was given when he arrived (page 13). He must keep all those items in his wooden crate in D Tent. Imagine you must stay at Camp Green Lake for 18 months. What would you bring with you? Draw all the items that would be in your wooden crate below, and write an explanation. Feeling Wistful The phrase If only is used to express wistfulness: a feeling of regretful longing. You can write your own wistful If only caption here. You can write more on page 24. If only the bark on the tree were a little softer. 6

8 CHAPTERS 6-8 After Reading 1. In your own words, explain why Stanley was sent to Camp Green Lake. 2. Describe Elya Yelnats. How is he related to Stanley? 3. Why did Madame Zeroni give Elya Yelnats a baby pig? What did she tell him to do with the pig? 4. What promise did Elya Yelnats break? 5. Think about this quote: A lot of people don t believe in curses. A lot of people don t believe in yellow-spotted lizards either, but if one bites you, it doesn t make a difference whether you believe in it or not. Do you think Elya s descendants are really cursed? Explain your answer in at least four sentences. 8

9 CHAPTERS 6-8 Extension Activities Choose one of the activities below to complete. 1. Re-read the description of Madame Zeroni on page 29. Draw a picture of her in the box below, including as many details from the book as you can. 2. Think about this: In Holes, Elya Yelnats breaks his promise to Madame Zeroni and so his descendants are cursed with bad luck. There are many other stories that involve curses. For example, in Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent is not invited to the princess s birth, and so she curses the princess, saying the princess will prick her finger on her sixteenth birthday and fall asleep forever. Imagine a new curse for people who do something you don t like. It could be a curse for people who mistreat animals, or who waste food, or who throw their garbage on the ground. In the box below, explain who your curse if for, and what sort of thing happens to them after they are cursed. 9

Label the pictures using the vocabulary words above. 3. In chapter 12, Mr. Pendanski will tell Stanley: You are here on account of one person. If it wasn t for that person, you wouldn t be here digging holes in the hot sun. What do you think Mr. Pendanski means when he says Stanley is here on account of one person? Explain it in your own words. 4. Do you have any nicknames? If you do, what are they, and how do you feel when people call you by your nickname? If you don t have a nickname, make up a nickname for yourself, and explain why it would be a good nickname for you. 10

11 CHAPTERS 9-13 After Reading 1. What nickname do the other boys give to Stanley? How does he feel about it? 2. What is the first interesting thing Stanley finds in his hole? Do you think he deserves to take the day off? Why or why not? 3. Draw and describe the second object that Stanley finds when digging, include as many details from the book as you can. What do you think the object is? 4. Instead of showing the golden tube to Mr. Pendanski, Stanley gives it to X-Ray. Do you think he made the right decision? Why or why not? What would you have done? 12 CHAPTERS 9-13 Extension Activities Think about Camp Green Lake s philosophy: If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy. Respond to this quote by choosing one of the activities below to complete. 1. Write a letter to the Governor of Texas, arguing that Camp Green Lake is a bad (or good) idea. Explain why you disagree (or agree) with the camp s philosophy. 2. Design a new camp to help boys who have made bad choices to fix their lives. Write a daily schedule of the boys activities. 3. Imagine you are Mr. Pendanski. Write a page in your diary, expressing your thoughts about the boys in D Tent, and about each boy s chances for a better future. 12

In one picture, show what Stanley s mother thinks Camp Green Lake is like, and in the other picture, show what Camp Green Lake is really like. 2. Imagine what would have happened if Stanley had not given the tube to X-Ray, but had shown it to Mr. Pendanski himself. Write that version of the story in the lower box. 15

Why were the people of Green Lake angry with Sam and Kate? 3. Explain why Trout Walker and Kate Barlow met again at Green Lake twenty years later. What happened then? 20

21 CHAPTERS Extension Activities Choose one of the activities below to complete. 1. One of the themes in this story is the unexpected consequences of words. Think about how many characters were affected by Elyas Yelnats broken promise to Madame Zeroni, or by Hattie Parker s decision to tell the rest of the town about Katherine and Sam. Write a paragraph discussing the power of words in this story. 2. Maybe you, like Stanley, have been accused of something you didn t do. Were you punished? Or were you able to prove that you were innocent? Write a paragraph about this experience, and how it made you feel. (If you haven t had an experience like this, you can write about someone you know.) 3. The people of Green Lake told Katherine that God would punish her for what she did. Think about this quote from the book: This all happened one hundred and ten years ago. Since then, not one drop of rain has fallen on Green Lake. You make the decision. Whom did God punish? Write a paragraph explaining this quote and responding to the question. _ 21

22 BONUS ACTIVITIES Enjoy these bonus activities once your teacher has checked your work. Spiced Peaches Katherine Barlow was famous for her spiced peaches. Try this recipe at home and tell us how you liked it! Spiced Peaches Recipe Yield: 4 Servings Ingredients 4 pounds peaches 1 cup vinegar 1 Tablespoon cinnamon 1 Tablespoon cloves 3 pounds brown sugar 1 teaspoon ginger 1 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon Cayenne pepper Instructions Boil sugar and vinegar Scald peaches in boiling water Remove skins and cook in sugar and vinegar mixture Tie spices in cheesecloth bag and cook with peaches When peaches are tender, pour into stone jars Reheat syrup every day to a boil for a week Word Search How many vocabulary words from the booklet can you find in the puzzle? Sam the Onion Man has ointments, lotions, syrups, and pastes all made out of onion juice and different parts of the onion plant. Some are good for the stomach, some for the heart, and some for the brain. Some cure asthma, others cure warts, and others make your hair grow. Make a poster selling one of Sam s onion concoctions. DO NOT CREATE YOUR POSTER HERE. USE A LARGER PAPER. (You may use the box below to create an outline). 24

25 BONUS ACTIVITIES Enjoy these bonus activities once your teacher has checked your work. Come to Beautiful Camp Green Lake! Make a brochure to advertise Camp Green Lake. Try to make the camp seem as attractive as possible, without actually lying.
