6 Before writing know: Your audience Your subject matter Your communication vehicle" Who you are!
7 Redundancy vs. Emphasis Do not use two (or three or four) words when one will do.
8 Eschew surplusage. Mark Twain
9 Adverbs are a monkey on the writer s back. Re(ly) on nouns and verbs and limit the long tail of the ly. Try to write without them.
10 As to the adjective: When in doubt, strike it out. Mark Twain
11 Simplify! If you need a big word to make a specific point, use it... Otherwise Clear, simple words are better than complex five-dollar words. small rather than diminutive heavy rather than burdensome

18 TEN STEPS... and you are on the road to good persuasive writing
19 ONE: Find the image at the heart of the piece you are about to write (use the facts and stories you have already gathered)
20 TWO: Look at it from every angle.
21 THREE: Write everything you can think of... blurt it onto the paper.
22 FOUR: Now, start crafting the narrative with the reader in mind...
23 FIVE: The first sentence should grab the reader s attention. (An image works well)
24 SIX: Develop bite-sized paragraphs and sentences that flow.
25 SEVEN: Make sure to carry the image/idea throughout the piece. (Don t mix metaphors, no matter how good they are choose!)
26 Visualize your metaphors {or you may end up with hats hanging on thin gruel}
27 EIGHT: Read through for continuity and cut any excess.
28 NINE: Put it away and read it the next day with fresh eyes.
29 TEN: Proof Read. Have others Proof Read. PROOF READ, again.
30 How to Proof Read Spell Check. Then... Print hard copy (best), or enlarge on-screen copy to 200% Read line by line with a ruler under each line Read each and every word OUT LOUD (we think we are reading carefully when we read silently, but we are scanning for meaning and easily skip over simple errors) Correct text and have someone else read it Proof read that copy... OUT LOUD
