1 OFIS News September-October 2015 Principal s Post By: Jordan B. I went to Mr. Svec s office and asked him a few questions. Question: Have there been any problems with kids running to or from the buses lately? Answer: Since reminding students of the importance of being safe when walking to and from the buses, the number of students running has declined significantly. Question: Have there been any incidents on the playground and or blacktop, like has anyone been running, falling and hurting themselves, lately? Answer: Although I know student are bummed about the new, no tag rule, it has helped to reduce the number of students injured on the playground. Question: Do you like the way Mr. and Mrs. Judson are doing the morning show (Bulldog Broadcast)? Answer: I am really excited about the new format. Soon, students will be taking part in the process of creating the show and who knows...that could be the beginning of a very lucrative career for them in broadcasting. That concludes my interview with Mr. Svec. Thank you for reading! Halloween Fun at OFIS!
2 Meet Mr. Bennett! By: Skylar B. I interviewed Mr. Bennett, our new P.E. teacher, and I asked him some questions. Here are his responses to them! If you could be in any book what would it be? My favorite book I read growing up was the BFG by Roald Dahl. If you were stuck in traffic what would you do to pass the time? When I was younger, my family would take a lot of trips and we would always drive. We drove everywhere; the furthest we ever drove was San Diego, CA. One game that we would play in the car was the State license plate game. We would try to see how many license plates we could find on those trips and we would keep track of them on a book that we traveled with. What s your favorite color? My favorite color is blue. If you were stuck on a deserted island what are two things you would have to have? If I were stuck on a deserted island the two things I would need to have would be my wife and sun block because I burn very easily! Did you always want to be a P.E. teacher? I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was young. I have always looked up to my dad, and he s the reason I am a teacher today. He was a Math teacher, and a girls basketball coach, so with him being a basketball coach, I grew up in the gymnasium. Have you taught anything besides physical education? I think preparation in all parts of life are important for success. The saying is if you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail. What it means is that if you are not ready to put the work in, and get ready for your next assignment, you can t expect to do well. What s your favorite sport? I like all different sports. I played soccer, basketball, and baseball for my high school team.in the summers I spend all of my time golfing. My favorite sport is the sport I am playing at the time but as I learn new sports I have begun to enjoy them as well.

5 Meet Mr. Sunkle! By: Kaylee S. I interviewed Mr. Sunkle, the new 4th grade math teacher. Here are some pretty cool things I learned about him in this interview. Why are you a math teacher in the first place? I love math and I have always loved working with and helping kids. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in the fourth grade and I just ran with it from there. Math being my favorite subject in school made this an easy choice for me. Why did you become a teacher in Olmsted Falls? Previous to teaching at OFIS, I had taught seventh and eighth grade math at a school in Cleveland. I knew that I wanted to make a change and I have always had great respect for Olmsted Falls and had always heard great things about the teachers and school system. I am honored to be working with great people and look forward to coming to work each and every day. If you could be an animal, what would you be? If I was an animal, I would be a dog. I love dogs and they are man s best friend, so that is what I would want to be. When you were a child, what was your favorite book? It is hard for me to choose one book, but I can choose a series that was my favorite. When I was younger, Goosebumps was all I wanted to read. As I got a little older, I really got into Harry Potter, which is by far, my favorite series of books to this date. Who is your hero and why? My heroes would be my parents because they have always encouraged me in everything that I did and they have always been fantastic to me. Who is your favorite basketball player? This is a really hard question for me to answer. Basketball is my favorite sport, so I am a fan of a lot of players. In student Council we plan fun days and service projects to build school spirit and to build a strong sense of community among the students and staff. What is the next project you might do next? The last week in October was Red Ribbon Week, and at the first all Member Meeting, members will decide on our December service project. Are you still doing the door decorating contest? Judging for the door decorating contest was held on Monday, October 26th. The fourth grade hallway won! Do your students come up with stuff right away or not right away? Student Council members often come to meetings, the ideas get bounced around and often grow into something even better than they originally wanted to have happen. Do a lot of people like student council? I think kids in Student Council enjoy being involved, especially when we collect items like toys or food and then have to sort pack, and deliver the donations. I play Lacrosse in Rocky River with my friend Anna and a bunch of other girls! We do tons of drills and fun games too! My coaches are very nice and give lots of good tips to us! LACROSSE ROCKS! What Gear do you need for Lacrosse? You do not need a lot of gear for Lacrosse. You just need a stick, mouthguard, goggles, and a ball to play the game. History of Lacrosse Native Americans played Lacrosse. The game began by the ball tossed into the air and the 2 sides trying to catch it. Because of all of the people that wanted to play, a huge group of players threw the ball to each other across the field. How do you play Lacrosse? Lacrosse is an easy and fun game to play. It s like soccer but with sticks. There are 2 goals and only 1 ball. You throw it around with your teammates. Before you start throwing the ball around, there is a face off, 1 person from each team. You throw the ball up in the air and if you catch the ball, you have to throw it to your teammates until they make a goal. The scripts are what we record after every mini project. We write the scripts. There are 5 days in Planet Zak project.
