14 1 3d LET S READ A) 1. Have you ever heard of, or tried abseiling or zip-lining? Dear Ron, It s been a long time. How s your vacation going? Have you done anything exciting? You ll never believe what I ve been doing! I m at a summer camp for two weeks, and I m having a fantastic time. There are so many different activities to participate in, you can never get bored. I ve been abseiling and canoeing they were great new experiences. As you know, I m not usually very adventurous like you. I worry about the safety of activities and getting hurt all the time. For the first three days, I played it safe, and just went swimming and hiking. But now I ve tried lots of potentially dangerous activities I ve tried abseiling (I was terrified), and I ve been climbing (I hate heights), and I ve even been on a zip-line (That was really scary!!) Are you impressed? I m a new guy! I know fear is a natural response to danger. It keeps us safe by stopping us from doing dangerous things. Keeping safe is a natural human instinct, but I m beginning to understand why people like doing these scary activities. I ve been feeling scared all week, but after doing the activities, I ve felt incredibly good! I ve read that fear causes the body to produce dopamine, and dopamine is called the feel-good hormone. I think that s why people get addicted to doing extreme sports Would you like to try them? Why or why not? Are there any facilities near you where you can do these activities? How dangerous do you think they are?... B) Now, read the and write True of False next to the statements below. 1. Andy is normally a daring person.. 2. Andy is usually concerned about having an injury during sports.. 3. Andy s friend is a similar type of person.. 4. He started participating fully after four days. 5. After a few days, Andy no longer felt afraid.. 6. Fear is a natural response to excitement.. Can you match the synonyms below. I m not planning to become an extreme sports athlete, but I have had a fabulous time. Maybe you can come with me on this camp next Summer. What do you think? We could have a great time together. Anyway, that s all for now. Write soon. Andy P.S. I ve attached some great photos for you to look at. 1. danger (n.) 2. scared (adj.) 3. addicted (adj.) 4. potentially (adv.) 5. experience (n.) 6. fabulous (adj.) 7. difficult (adj.) 8. far (adj.) 9. painful (adj.) 10. place (n.) a. event b. remote c. challenging d. peril e. location f. frightened g. sore h. fantastic i. hooked j. possibly 42

How long do Koala s sleep each day? 2. Are Koala s considered an endangered species? 3. Are Koala s considered bears? 44

17 4 LET S READ Read the text carefully and try to remember the facts. Then prepare 3 questions about the text to ask your partner. Ask each other your questions. Cool Koalas The Koala is native to Australia, and is mostly found in the eastern and southeastern parts of the country. Although it is commonly called the Koala bear, it is actually not classified as a bear. Koalas have coarse grey fur like a bear, and sharp claws for climbing trees, but they are classified as marsupials like kangaroos and wombats. Marsupial females have a pouch where they carry the joey for the first 6 months of its life. The joey is born after 30 to 35 days. At this stage, it is blind and deaf, and has no fur. It uses its sense of smell to find its way into the mothers pouch. The joey stays there and feeds on its mother s milk until it is fully developed. Once the Koala is mature it begins to eat the leaves of the Eucalyptus tree. There are about 600 different species of Eucalyptus tree, but Koalas only eat 1-2 species. Eucalyptus leaves are poisonous to most animals, but Koalas are able to digest them safely. They eat about 1 kg of eucalyptus leaves a day. The leaves spend more time than usual in the koala s body, which allows the maximum amount of nutrients to be absorbed. Koalas also absorb a lot of water from the leaves, so you won t see Koala s drinking much water. Koalas live in the trees and sleep in them for about hours a day. They are considered very lazy animals and don t require a lot of energy because they are so inactive. Koalas are considered vulnerable in the wild, but they will soon be endangered if humans keep destroying their habitats. If humans keep cutting down the Eucalyptus trees, then the koalas will have nowhere to live, and nothing to eat. 5 LOOK AND SEARCH In Australia there are many places, especially zoos, where you can take your picture with a Koala and possibly even hold or feed one. Almost every zoo across the world also has Koalas available for viewing. Do you think keeping animals caged up and away from their natural habitat is healthy? Do you think that keeping animals in zoos can help to save species? Do some research about this. 45
