Toolooa State High School Tune In Toolooa ISSUE 19 Term 4 Week 10 10th of December, 2015 Respect chievement Excellence Responsibility Student ttendance Level. cting Principal s Piece. Bryan Townsend 2015 Year in Review 2015 was another busy but successful year at Toolooa SHS. Our students have engaged in an enormous number of opportunities throughout the year; academic challenges, sporting options, curriculum excursions, service groups and so on. These help create the environment that our students enjoy here at Toolooa High. Thank you to all staff, students, parents and community members who have contributed to making 2015 a success at Toolooa. Year 7 Orientation Days Review What an impressive group of students! The opportunity for our 2016 year 7 students to experience two days at Toolooa SHS has been a tremendous success. Getting to know the layout of the school, who some of the teachers are, an understanding of how our days run and what our expectations are proved to all in all be a valuable experience for all of our new students. Each year we lose an enormous amount of talent and tradition when our year 12 s transition into life after school and we rely on our incoming students to replenish the stocks. We are very excited about this group coming in. big thanks to Jess Batey (Junior Secondary Coordinator), Craig O Connor (year 7 and transition coordinator) and year 7 teachers for organising and running the day. Reporting Many of our report cards have already been sent out with the last couple of year levels being posted this week. We would encourage our parents to contact the school in the New Year if these reports do not make it home. Leaving staff The quality of a school cannot exceed the quality of its teachers. This is a simple and obvious statement which has significant meaning at this time of a year. The student outcomes achieved at Toolooa SHS this year are reflective of the quality of our teachers, some of which are moving on. We would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment to improving the outcomes of students in their classes. Best wishes to the following staff who embark on their next journey. Peter Hammett (retirement) Bill Moloney Shari Worgan Karen Petherick Focus areas for 2016 To consolidate and continue improvement at Toolooa SHS there will be a deliberate focus in the following areas in 2016: Writing Reading Continuing to build an expert teaching team ttendance School Return for 2016 We wish our students, parents, staff and community a safe and relaxing holiday to end a very busy year. In 2016 the entire school (year 7 12) will return on Wednesday 27 January. Please also keep in mind that term 1, 2016 is a 9 week term. 2 FROM THE JUNIOR DEPUTY S DESK Term 4 Week 10 From the Deputy s Desk Danielle Willard Wow, what a year 2015 has been! The students have been involved in so many amazing opportunities and experiences. So many memorable moments, here are a few of them; watching students jump off very high platforms and conquering their fears at a camp, seeing our athletes run or swim and produce personal best times, seeing students succeed in the classroom where they were once having trouble, admiring the sound of the concert band and the string ensemble and viewing artworks in exhibitions. The students have applied themselves one hundred percent in all that they have done across looks to hold many more amazing opportunities. Wishing all the families at Toolooa a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. If you are traveling please stay safe and we are all looking forward to Cheers Mrs Danielle Willard FROM THE DEPUTY S DESK From the Junior Deputy Maree Dwyer Hello one and all. Wow! Where did that term go? Here we are in the last week of school, and I feel as though I would really like some more time to spend with our wonderful Year Sevens/Eights, and their dedicated teachers. It has been an absolute pleasure to have the opportunity to touch bases with many students and parents while in the Deputy Principal role for term four. I believe that 2015 has been a year of positive growth for all of us, and that this will continue as we all gather together in 2016, to begin a new year of promise and challenges. I would like to thank each of our wonderful Toolooa families for the support you have given during the year, and wish you all a very happy holiday. Kind regards, Maree Dwyer. ll the very best for 2016.

JNR / SNR SCHOOLING From The Junior Secondary Co-Ordinator With Jess Batey Student Leads Revision s you know, this is a very busy time of term as students and teachers are well into the assessment period. Recently, the year eight extension maths/science class was lucky enough to participate in a revision game show prepared by one of their peers. Kynan Elliott in year eight asked if he could prepare the revision game show for the class and he did a wonderful job! Kynan spent time at school and at home to create a challenging and engaging revision session for his peers. It was obviously very successful as everyone in the class achieved at a very high standard in their exam the following week. Well done, Kynan! Thank you to the generous support of Toolooa staff and students and South Rotary members who will help brighten the Christmas period for another 3 local families. Three hampers will be delivered to the Salvation rmy to support those in need this year dopt a Family Well done to the Toolooa Interact Club (pictured below) who were the driving force behind keeping this local initiative a goal for the club again this year. Graduating members of the Interact club Kaitlyn Read (president 2015) and Sarah Lumsden (secretary 2015) will deliver the hampers in the next week.

Congratulations to the students of Toolooa State High School who celebrated the completion of their Certificate I in Business at the EBITS Centre. Students were treated to a smorgasbord style lunch kindly donated by Boyne Smelters Ltd. During their time at EBITS, students have not only completed their certificate, they have been exposed to a world class luminium Smelter and experienced the necessary Workplace Health and Safety requirements. From studying onsite, they have witnessed first-hand the requirements of working at the Smelter and have gained a better understanding for choosing future career paths. These students should be congratulated on a wonderful past six months, and we look forward to seeing many of these students return to EBITS in ME mbassador Presentation Breakfast rd Thursday 3 December saw Janaya Ray being presented with her ME ambassador certificate and pin. The formal breakfast was the culminating event following three days of induction, tour and guest presentations. Kaitlyn Read (2015 ME mbassador) was one of the MC s for the event and was proud to be part of the handover ceremony. Best of luck to Janaya in her role as ME ambassador many opportunities to promote and be invovled in the next 12 months will be an amazing experience. 5 Good Guidance with Silke Hetherington & Jenny Morris FROM THE GUIDNCE OFFICE Laughter Is The Best Medicine How is it that the sound of laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle, or yawn. Laughter is a natural part of life. The part of the brain that connects to and facilitates laughter is among the first parts of the nervous system to come on line after birth. Infants begin smiling during the first weeks of life and laugh out loud within months of being born. Even if you did not grow up in a household where laughter was a common sound, you can learn to laugh at any stage of life. Now is the time. While humour and laughter can cause a domino effect of joy and amusement for anyone in range, it is well researched that this activity can make us healthier. Though it can be difficult to define what exactly makes humour funny, laughter has long been considered helpful to the healing process. Substantial research indicates that humour and laughter play a health role. Did you know that laughing: exercises the internal organs (great for the stomach muscles and the cardiovascular system), with all that mouth opening and deep breathing, laughing gets more oxygen to the brain (to enhance alertness and thinking), boosts endorphins (natural mood-elevating and pain-killing chemicals), strengthens the immune system (to help fight off disease.) Laughter has also been shown to improve pain tolerance, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and protect the heart. The social effects too are many. They include: improving a person's optimism and outlook on life connecting you to others others will want to spend time with you fostering instant relaxation and most importantly IT MKES YOU FEEL GOOD Unlike more invasive therapies, laughter therapy is cheap and has no harmful side effects - not bad for such an enjoyable activity. The great Groucho Marx who spent his movie life clowning around stated : clown is like an aspirin, only he works twice as fast. But Humour must be used with care. Children should not be exposed to inappropriate adult humour. Never use humour to offend or shame another person. It s not about laughing at another person but ensuring everyone enjoys the joke. If you feel a need to laugh at someone make sure that that someone is you. Try these activities. They will benefit your child and you: Watch comedy DVD s and TV shows Visit the circus do some clowning around yourself Listen to comedy while driving the news these days is very depressing Read comic authors/ tell jokes. Seek out funny people - spend less time with overly serious people. Bring humour into conversations. Tell and invite funny stories Just practise smiling and laughing. If you have to - `fake it till you make it` Let s see more people laughing, and smiling. Our communities, including schools and workplaces, can only benefit. dapted from Gregory J. Boyle and Jeanne M. Joss-Reid, "Relationship of Humour to Health", British Journal of Health Psychology, Feb GOOD GUIDNCE

GOOD GUIDNCE Good Guidance with Silke Hetherington & Jenny Morris FROM THE GUIDNCE OFFICE Laughter Is The Best Medicine Here are some jokes to share with the Kids In which battle did Napoleon die? his last What can you never eat for breakfast? Lunch or dinner What looks like half an apple?.the other half If you throw a red stone into the blue sea what will it become?.wet How can a man go 8 days without sleeping? No problem, he sleeps at night How can you lift an elephant with one hand? You will never find an elephant that has one hand! If it took 8 men ten hours to build a wall, how long would it take 4 men to build it?..no time at all as the wall is already built How can you drop a raw egg onto a concrete floor without cracking it?.. ny way you want as concrete floors are very hard to crack. SO LET S LUGH MORE Konnichiwa! LOTE News This year has been a very busy one for LOTE! ll year levels have worked hard and have made achievements to be proud of. Language learning is an important subject area in schools and helps with all aspects of brain development. Learning a second language helps with: improving brain power and memory. Increasing a person s ability to multi-task Enhancing knowledge of English language and performance in other academic areas Helping a person become more flexible and open with other cultures Building self-confidence and aids in self-discovery In short, encourage your child to continue with Japanese! It s fun and can help them in far more ways than just how to order some sushi! LOTE NEWS

The Technology staff are looking forward another massive year of outstanding results and high standards of safety and curriculum delivery.

rt Exhibition RT NEWS Last Friday, Toolooa's illustrious year 10 Visual rt students hosted their first exhibition in the art block. Through this last semester, students have been working within groups to create artworks which respond to a theme chosen by the group. There was a wide range of skills on display, ranging from painting to sculpture, photography to mixed media constructions. The classes were visited by other classes in the school, as well as many parents, teachers and staff.
