2 LENGTH: 30 minutes Teenage Nightmare By Laura Toffenetti ABOUT THE SCRIPT: Touching on the trials and tribulations of being a teen, this one act satire brings teen life center stage in the form of a live news magazine. Loaded with teen-friendly sketches such as Shopping With Mom, Babysitting a Child Named Moose, and Trying to Ask a Girl on a Date, it also includes a flashy street interview titled, Dumb Things Parents, Teachers, and Kids Say in addition to four short scenes between parents and teens on What Happened in School Today. Find the latest in teen fashion, poetry, and of course, advice columns on makeup and shaving from Babs and Philipe, your favorite editors. The play also includes two commercials: Zitaway: A Unique Blend of Vitamins B1-27 and Parents in a Box: All of the Comforts of Home. A quick reality check and it continues with Chores That Bore, a comical stand-off between parents and teens on cleaning their rooms and taking out the trash. *Note: Below is a representation of the characters in the play. Please understand that some roles may not be listed while others are gender flexible and may be cast differently than shown. In addition, some skits may be added or deleted. 3 Top 10 things you should know about MT Theatre: 1. Theatre takes commitment. Look at the rehearsal schedule carefully and consider the time requirement of other activities you are involved in. If you cannot put forth time and effort needed during this production, don t audition. 2. Theatre is a team effort. Missing rehearsal lets down the other members of the cast and crew no matter what your role is. 3. Sports. MT cross-country and football practice will conflict with fall play rehearsals. 4. Auditioning. You will not be considered for the production without a parent signature and a photo. All students wishing to audition must sign up on the callboard outside Mrs. Azeltine s room. (1521) Students will be called up in random order. Actors should bring their completed audition packet and production contract to auditions. Crew should turn in their packet to Mrs. Azeltine on or before the audition date. 5. Getting chosen. Remember that being selected for the cast or crew is an honor. Quitting a production after you have been cast will affect your future involvement in MT Theatre. 6. Working your way in. If you don t get your ideal role or crew position the first time you try out, don t be discouraged. This is a chance to prove yourself. You will find that all positions in theatre are fun! Remember that the director is always watching for a positive attitude, responsibility and commitment to the program.you are always auditioning. 7. Getting cut. While every effort is made to involve as many Timberwolves as possible, cuts are a normal part of theatre. Remember that getting cut is not a reflection of the judges feelings towards you. We often have large numbers of students wishing to be involved and only a finite number of roles available. If you are not selected this time, try out again! It may be that the perfect role is waiting for you in another play. Perseverance is noticed. 8. Mandatory rehearsals. All known absences must be listed on your audition form (Dr. appointments, vacations, prior commitments, family gatherings etc.). All rehearsals during the final two weeks of the production are MANDATORY, unless in the case of illness. No early dismissals are allowed. 9. Communication. If you are ill and cannot make rehearsal, you must let the director know personally by phone or . The office does not notify extracurricular sponsors when a child is called in sick to school. It is your responsibility to communicate with the director. Unexcused absences demonstrate a lack of consideration for other members of the cast and crew and may lead to your dismissal from the play. 10. Tips for audition success. Memorize your lines if you can (see monologues at the end of the packet)! Try to relax and have fun. The judges will be looking for people who are willing to step outside their comfort zone and act a little crazy.
4 Teenage Nightmare Tentative Rehearsal Schedule The following schedule is TENTATIVE and includes all possible dates for rehearsal. Rehearsal times will be extended during the final week of the production. 3 I agree to maintain good grades while involved in the school play (C or better). I also understand that if my grades are not at an acceptable level I will be dismissed from the play. 4 I agree to make sure that my behavior in school and at school activities is appropriate. I agree to be respectful to all staff, parent volunteers, and members of the cast and crew at all times. If my behavior becomes a problem (disrespect, detentions, ISS, OSS etc.) I understand that I risk my continued involvement in the play. 5 I understand that it is my responsibility to have the rehearsal schedule and to make my parents aware of the times and days that I will be attending play rehearsal. Missing rehearsal is unacceptable. 6 I understand that my transportation home must be arranged before rehearsal each day. 8 Monologues Please be prepared to perform ONE of the following monologues at auditions. If you obtain this packet at enrollment, memorization is requested. If you obtain this packet at the start of school, memorization is not required due to the early audition date. Remember... speak extra loud, use lots of expression, be confident and have fun! Female Strict Parents My parents? Strict? Naw...I mean once...my teachers told them I was texting in class... So they took my phone away. And to top it off I came in past my curfew last Friday so they grounded me for a week. A long, week without my phone or TV privileges in the house, no one to talk to...except my mom... so I talked to her non stop from the moment I came home until it was time to go to bed. Being grounded only lasted for 3 days, and then she started yelling, I CAN'T take it anymore! I got the phone back. So, yeah...they pretty much let me do what I want since then!! Mom Trouble Lizzie...you have got to help me. I have to find a way to get my mom to STOP singing. She sings in the car, she sings while she makes dinner, it s nonstop... Who wants to see and hear their mom singing Beyoncé while dancing all crazy around the kitchen??!! It s embarrassing. Not to mention she is tone deaf. Her singing sends our dog running into the other room. In fact, it s so bad she was kicked off the PTA because the other mom s couldn t stand another karaoke fundraiser with her! So... quick Lizzie...You have GOT to help find a way to keep my mom from singing!!! Male Why Grow Up? I don t ever want to be a grown-up. I don t. I mean, look at them! Their faces are all sour and stern and old looking! Why would I ever want to be one of them? They walk around like robot-people. No expression. No smile. No life! It s like they re half-dead already! What normal teen would ever want to become one of those? No time for hanging out with your friends, listening to music, going skateboarding! All work and no play! What kind of life is that, I ask you? Loud Mouth Fan Everyone loves to be cheered on. It can make anyone stand a little taller, walk a little prouder. (Pause) Except when that roaring crowd is your mother, and she thinks it s totally OK to not only holler at you the entire game, but to holler nicknames at you! It s completely humiliating. She even got yellow carded by the referee once. Then she figured out the rules. You can only not yell when someone s shooting a free throw. After that, it s fair game. Open season. I love my mom and the support she gives me so how do I politely tell her to shush up?
