Please fill out the Audition Form, Commitment and Responsibility Contract and Conflict Sheet and BRING WITH YOU TO YOUR AUDITION!!! Not doing so will hinder you being cast in the show. Vocal and Acting Audition: Thursday, December 20, 2018 Choir Room Upper School You will be given a 5-minute slot to audition. Sign up here: SONG: You will need to prepare and sing 16 bars from a similar musical and bring the karaoke track on your phone to sing with. Examples of musicals to choose from are My Fair Lady, Oliver, Music Man, Jekyll and Hyde and Les Miserables. 3 rd and 4 th graders need to do the monologue only, NOT a song. MONOLOGUE: Must be between 1-2 minutes in duration. It should be in first person. Make sure the passage conveys emotion and is not too passive. It needs to be memorized. We do not need a copy of it. The most convenient place to find good monologues is online or age appropriate books. Introduce yourself! Good afternoon, my name is and my piece is from. This should be simple and give us a glimpse of your personality! All auditions are CLOSED to the public. No parents, siblings or students who are not auditioning are allowed in the audition room. Only the musical production staff and the auditioning student will be present during the auditions.

2 Please arrive 5 minutes prior to call time. An assistant will bring you to the room for the audition. The best doors to use for auditions is the one outside the Blackbox Theatre near the Administrative offices. You may leave after your audition. Cast Posted: Friday, December 21st: 4:00 pm on the school website. Auditioning FAQ S Do Seniors always get the principal roles? No. Everyone comes into auditions on the same level no matter what grade or how many shows they have been in. If there is a tie between two students of EQUAL TALENT, the part will usually be assigned to the older student. How can I get the role I want? Do everything you can to show the director that you can fill this role. Speak/Sing with EXPRESSION. Express the EMOTION of the song through your voice and body. PRACTICE so that you can avoid staring at the paper for the words. PROJECT loud enough for someone to hear you in the back row. Make eye contact with the director and lookout to the audience when you sing. Use gestures with your body, hands, arms, etc. Act confident and pretend that you are not nervous or afraid to be on stage. Research the show, find out what the show is about, who the characters are. Check out the script, listen to the music, watch the movie. These suggestions will help you put your best foot forward and to stand out from the rest. How does the director assign the roles to students? There are many things that are taken into consideration when assigning roles. Ability to sing &/or sell a song to an audience on your own, ability to act, ability to speak clearly and with volume, behavior at auditions (followed directions, was helpful, respectful of others, honest, a good leader, etc.), behavior during rehearsal and performances of previous productions, being a leader and a good role model, and potential conflicts with the rehearsal schedule. Why didn t I get the part I wanted? It may be one or more of the above. A director s main task is to take the talent of each student that wants to participate and use that talent for the good of the individual and the production as a whole from the principal role to the chorus role. A director must coordinate and match the members of the cast so that they are balanced and feel comfortable as well as be able to present the story to an audience with direction. If I don t get a lead why should I be in the chorus? The chorus is a very important part of any production as they bring the musical to life with choreography, volume and how they react to the dialogue and situations on stage. A wise chorus member will pay attention to the principal roles and blocking and learn those parts as well. If there is ever a problem and a principal actor cannot perform, a director tends to look for someone within the cast to fill the role. The experience will also help you feel more confident for next audition. Show Synopsis Produced nationally and internationally, Little Women has been praised by critics for its ambition in adapting such a wellknown story for the stage. This timeless, captivating story is brought to life in this glorious musical filled with personal discovery, heartache, hope and everlasting love. The original production starred the unparalleled Sutton Foster, who received Tony, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations for her performance. Based on Louisa May Alcott's life, Little Women follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, but the publishers are not interested her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her that she has to do better and write more from herself. Begrudgingly taking this advice, Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America. Little Women embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears and a lifting of the spirit. The powerful score soars with the sounds of personal discovery, heartache and hope the sounds of a young America finding its voice.

3 Little Women Cast: Jo March Our story's protagonist. Passionate, adventurous, and brave. She has the idea of writing Little Women and eventually becomes engaged to Professor Bhaer. Vocal range top: A5 Vocal range bottom: E3 Professor Bhaer German Professor who exemplifies proper manners. He is a boarder in Mrs. Kirk's boarding house and eventually falls in love with Jo. Gender: Male Vocal range top: F#4 Vocal range bottom: G2 Amy March The youngest, most energetic sister with a rather pompous air about her. She later marries Laurie. Vocal range top: Gb5 Vocal range bottom: -1 Meg March The world-weary, yet hopeful, oldest sister who yearns for a great life. She marries John and has twins with him. Vocal range top: Gb5 Vocal range bottom: A#3 Beth March The second youngest sister who tragically dies of Scarlet Fever. Peace-maker, lover, and an optimist who is always encouraging her sisters to dream. Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: A3 Marmee March The girls' mother. She is the strong backbone of the family, who is courageous in spite of the difficult odds she faces. Vocal range top: Eb5 Vocal range bottom: Eb3 Mr. Laurence Laurie Laurence The bright-eyed boy-next-door with considerable charm. He loves Jo but later falls in love with Amy. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, all students scheduled to be at rehearsal are expected to remain there for the entire time. The week prior to the performances and the week of the show will consist of late and long hours for everyone involved in the production. Be sure you and your parents understand this before you audition for the show. Attendance and CONFLICTS: The musical is a MAJOR extracurricular activity. If you are already participating in another major activity, you must be willing to compromise and keep up in your schoolwork. YOU MUST ATTEND REHEARSALS and be on time. If you insist on being late, we ll ask you to withdraw from the show. We will be operating on a 3 Strikes You re Out! policy. If you have 3 unexcused absences/arrive severely late/have to leave early from rehearsal You will be Dismissed and/or Replaced. Illness is an accepted excuse except in chronic illness during which you would miss more rehearsals than could be allowed. In the instance that you should become chronically ill and miss several rehearsals, your participation level in the musical may be altered (i.e. given a different role or removal from some dance numbers). Meetings, rescheduled athletic practices, a rock concert, the movies, vacations, birthdays and other such events will NOT be valid excuses for missing rehearsals. If in doubt about any of these things, check with Mrs. Wenk. We are aware that the musical is a HUGE time commitment. Attached is a conflict sheet. Parents and students should take extraordinary care in filling this out. Any conflicts that are listed on the sheet will be considered an excused absence and will not hinder your role in the show. However, conflicts during mandatory rehearsals will need to be discussed with Mrs. Wenk directly as missing any could hinder your role in the show. Anything not listed on the conflict sheet and considered last minute risks being considered an unexcused absence. Availability is important. Do not expect the directors to develop a rehearsal schedule to suit you. If you plan to participate in athletics or you have a job, you must indicate this on your audition form. This does not mean we will work around your schedule - it simply tells us who has a job and who does not. YOU MUST plan your work schedule around rehearsals! It is your responsibility to be flexible if you want a part, no matter how large or how small. Please understand that a lead in the musical is just as important as any other music or sport activity. For this reason, it is of the utmost importance that you mark on your audition form any conflicts, since leads will be chosen from those candidates who will be most available for rehearsals.

5 Having conflicts will not necessarily keep a student from being a part of the production. We will try to be as flexible as possible and we ask you to do the same. If you are able to change times and/or dates of lessons, classes, meetings, etc. then we ask that you do so first. The most important part of this, however, is the upfront knowledge of what we are dealing with as far as schedules are concerned. While we understand that emergencies do happen, it is detrimental to the process of creating theatre to have people suddenly miss rehearsal because they forgot or have something better to do. Check your rehearsal schedule daily to know when you are needed. ***See pages below to fill out and bring to your audition
