2 FROM THE ARTISTIC/MANAING DIRECTOR Thank you for attending ACT s first 2009 presentation. We are pleased to bring you this entertaining look into the past. It is only through memberships that ACT can continue to bring you high-quality live theater events. We have an exciting season planned and don t want anyone to miss a single show. See the back page of this program for how you can become a 2009 ACT member and membership benefits. The American Association of Community Theatre s (AACT) Festival cycle begins again this year. Last cycle, ACT s production Honk! won the state and regional festivals, placed third at the national festival and ultimately, represented the United States at the international Festival of Children s Performing Arts in Toyama, Japan. This year ACT is remounting its production How to Talk Minnesotan. Workshop performances are Thursday and Friday, March 26 and 27, 7:30 p.m. See the back inside cover of this program for details. As you noticed when you arrived, we are going through another phase of Capitol Theatre renovations. The lobby is being renovated to be a more welcoming place for you to enjoy our events. 5 Colleen Raye, the creator of The Girl Singers, has performed as a vocalist across the country from Las Vegas to Atlantic City. Raye also tours with A Musical Tribute to Patsy Cline, Straighten Up and Fly Right and The Girl Singers Christmas Show that she also created. A composer, she not only wrote the theme to this show, but also Winter Carnival Waltz, Touch the Sky for the Wisconsin Special Olympics and other songs and jingles. Jennifer, Sophie, and Reed Grimm are her children. For more info check or Debbie O Keefe, Raye s sister, has performed for the past seven years as a regular female vocalist with the Minnesota Jazz Orchestra and also performs annually with Colleen Raye & Co. in the New Year s Eve Production, Get Your Kicks at the Phipps! O Keefe has appeared in other Phipps productions and also sings with The Phipps Festival Chorus. Jennifer Grimm has been singing on stages worldwide ever since her first professional performance at age two. As of 2006, she has had success overseas with her music hit, Blue On Blue, starred in the Ordway's production of My Way: a Tribute to Frank Sinatra and has completed her third cabaret in New York City along with other solo performances on the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas. Her solo albums include Afternoon, featuring all original songs, A Christmas with Family and Friends and All Of Me. Sophie Grimm, 21, has been in several plays and musicals, including Winifred in "Once Upon a Mattress", Mama in "Chicago" and musical revues while singing professionally with her family for over 18 years. Now attending Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, majoring in musical theater, Sophie performs in cabarets CAST and ORCHESTRA NOTES and nightclubs in the city as well as a leading role in CCPA's spring production, "The Bells Are Ringing. Sophie also taught music at Summer Camp for inner-city Chicago children and composed music for the camp's production. Norton Lawellin shared the stage with headliners such as Jerry Lewis, Bobby Goldsboro, Roy Clark and Buck Owens, Ray Stevens and Kate Smith when touring the U.S. and Canada with a musical celebration of our nation's bicentennial. Following those tours, Lawellin relocated to the Twin Cities area. In 1982, he launched Track Record Studios, a recording and music production facility. His piano and vocal stylings are in demand for corporate special events and as support for local celebrities. In 2003, he was called as contemporary worship coordinator for his church. Reed Grimm, a multi-faceted performer is a graduate of UW-LaCrosse, majoring in percussion performance. He is the lead singer in "Shoeless Revolution" and the drummer and cowriter of several of their songs. The group recently released their first CD. Check out They perform throughout the midwest. Reed has been on stage since age two and is seen with Colleen Raye & Company at New Year's Eve in Hudson at The Phipps Center for the Arts. Tom Lewis is a freelance jazz bassist living in Minneapolis. He works regularly with a variety of national jazz artists visiting the Twin cities area. These include Eddie Higgins, Benny Golson, Slide Hampton, Lew Tabackin and Mose Allison. He is an active member of the Twin Cities jazz scene, in high demand as a performer, clinician and session player. Recent jazz recordings include the Phil Hey Quartet's Subduction, Eddie Higins Trio Live at the Dakota and Carol Martin's Pieces of Dreams. 7 WORKSHOP PERFORMANCES OF FESTIVAL SHOW PLEASE COME HELP US ACT s production How To Talk Minnesotan will be part of the 2009 American Association of Community Theatre s One-Act Festival cycle. This is the same festival that ACT s Honk! entered in 2007, ultimately sending it to Japan. ACT produced the full-length show last fall as part of its 2008 season. Audience participation is essential in helping cut the production down to one hour. We ll be asking for your input following each workshop performance. Schultz More fun than a smelt feed, How to Talk Minnesotan the Musical gives the audience lessons in regional vernacular through soon-to-beclassic songs like Hotdish Hallelujah, The One That Got Away and Probably Love or Whatever. Lessons at the lodge are interspersed with commercial-like jingles for favorite products like Slow Decay Snack Cakes and Guns n Lures. Filled with lots of laughs, this show transports audiences to the Lost Walleye Lodge. Here s your chance to go up to the lake without tying the bikes to the roof of the car.
