Involuntary Painting, for those that don't know, can be described as follows: "With all the changes in contemporary art over the last 100 years what, out there in the world, could be mistaken for a painting? If you were a visiting alien or a robot who understood the criteria by which art is judged, what might you misattribute as a painting? That through some process: time, decay, graffiti or some kind of abuse, has become 'Involuntary Painting'." Twenty of the pieces are now on display at the Kerry Geopark Information Centre. Page 6

His topic Biodiversity with specific references to his own work areas of Kilcummin and Gortbrack - is close to his heart. He explained the word Biodiversity as the interaction of all living things, at both micro and macro levels, with every living organism having its own place and each is dependent on all around it. He stated that the web of life, as we know it, is cracking on a universal scale and that we must at local levels insist on proper development such as community involvement, natural fertilisers, habitat creation, fair trade all features that are disappearing in the wider world and hence the appalling and unstoppable temperature rise of 2 degrees in the next twenty years. He spoke about the forest garden and how to create and tend it, from the outside shelter belt to trees within that fix nitrogen, fruit for sustenance both above and below ground and the use of mushrooms and fungi. With such attention, the yield per acre can be five times that of conventional farming. At the end he posed to us the question What Can We Do To Improve Our Habitats? The talk ended with useful discussion in all directions. Our next get together will be a fun evening on Thursday, 3 rd December, 7.30 p.m. at Gateway for the Club s Christmas Party. Page 9

10 Sneem International Storytelling & Folklore Festival 2015 This year s Festival was our best by far and we have so many people to thank: firstly all our wonderful storytellers, the GAA Legends, Sneem DramSoc and all our volunteers without whom we couldn't have done it. Also we have to thank our sponsors Fáilte Ireland for their kind support and the Friends of Muckross who sponsor our Young Tellers. Sneem Hotel, Louis and his staff for an amazing performance at a very busy time. Lastly, we must mention the Crèche, Sacre Coeur and the pubs for their hospitality which made so many of our events possible and successful. The first teller was in the barn: Killarney s Ray O Sullivan. It was his first time at our festival and he threw himself into it, literally. At the festival closing he was up and down off the floor. David Campbell hosted our Tellers from Abroad and over two days they appeared in the Wrestlers and the Blue Bull. Niki Na Meadhra, Anne Glover, ReVonda Crow and David McDonnell were very well received and learned a lot from our main storytellers. Maureen Sullivan from Kenmare enhanced our Friday night concert with songs in between our storytellers. Each of our main tellers have their own style and so a very enjoyable night was had by all. David Campbell told ancient Scottish and Irish stories of adventure and romance. On the closing story swap he sang us a song about a Scotsman s kilt. Those of you who were there will remember the little blue ribbon! Clare Murphy told lovely stories with a twist! Lisa Feeney s lecture was well attended and enjoyed. The guided walk led by John Vincent around the village finished up in D. O Shea s followed by a story swap with Clare and Ray. This was so good they nearly missed seeing Gabriel Fitzmaurice, the acclaimed poet and author. One of our most popular events every year is Batt s performance in the Blue Bull which was packed out. We had to really squeeze them in as everyone loves hearing his yarns and verses. This year there were nine Young Tellers who had a much bigger audience than previous years. Our main concert was the GAA Legends an evening with Micháel Ó Muircheartaigh, Pat Spillane, Tony Hanahoe and Weeshie Fogarty - what a night! A very appreciative audience lapped up every word uttered by them. We have had nothing but positive comments from people who attended. The Thomas Markham cup was also on stage - another legend! DramSoc s Lunchtime Theatre: A Reluctant Tragic Heroine and The Evils of Tobacco was attended by over 60 people. The last two story swaps of the festival - one in Riney s, the other in Dan Murphy s - had many new tellers but everyone was waiting for Ger Coffey - always a smash hit! The two events held for children in Sneem Community Crèche were greatly enjoyed by young and old, in particular Anne Glover s story with string and Clare Murphy s tales which captivated their audience. To see more photos, please look at our Facebook page: Sneem Storytelling Festival. PS. Irish TV came - see Sky 191 Kerry Matters episode 162. Page 10
