7 ABOUT US Theatre Junction is a crossroads for the exchange of art and ideas, where people, art forms and philosophies converge, creating a rich cultural landscape in the city of Calgary. HISTORY +CULTURE Built in 1912 by the visionary leader Sir James Lougheed, the GRAND is the oldest theatre in Calgary. It was the venue that presented many of the first theatre, opera, ballet and symphony concerts in Calgary, cementing The GRAND as the city s cornerstone of cultural life. Through the efforts of Mark Lawes and the Theatre Junction Society, The GRAND Theatre was saved from demolition in It remains what is widely regarded as one of the best performing arts spaces in Canada.
