3 MAIN ATTRACTIONS Main Attractions What main films will play at the Hiway? Predicting in advance what films will play at our beloved one-screen Hiway is the biggest challenge that we face. It is very hard to know ahead of time. The films listed here are an educated guess. Our website is always the best place to get up-to-the-minute information. Scheduling our main films is weekto-week. On Monday, we decide what main film will play starting that Friday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we set the showtimes for the upcoming week and then update our website and telephone hotline. We also send out a weekly (sign up at our website). Sometimes, we book a main film a few weeks in advance, which we post on our website. (Or call our Hotline at ) On the Basis of Sex USA - Mimi Leder - 2 hr The story of young lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg as she brings a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court of Appeals and overturns a history of gender discrimination. The Upside USA - Neil Burger - 1 hr 58 min THE UPSIDE is a life-affirming film about making connections in unlikely places. Bryan Cranston plays a wealthy quadriplegic who hires an unlikely young man, played by Philadelphia native Kevin Hart, as his personal assistant. Despite being from different worlds, the two find a common bond and a new exuberance for life. Also with Nicole Kidman. If Beale Street Could Talk USA - Barry Jenkins - 1 hr 57 min Director Barry Jenkins follow-up to the 2016 Best Picture Winner Moonlight. Set in 1970 s Harlem, this poetic adaptation of James Baldwin s last novel is about a young couple who are planning their life together when one of them is wrongly accused of a crime. Jenkins gorgeous cinematic technique mirrors the thoughtful prose of Baldwin s text. Featuring wonderful performances from KiKi Layne and Stephan James.

In addition to screening classic films from the likes of Spielberg and Hitchcock, we also teamed up with local community groups to screen documentaries, independent and local films, and lectures about issues and topics in the Jenkintown community. Summer Member Drive Exceeds Goal This summer we held our first ever membership drive and it was a great success! Our goal was to bring in 80 first-time Hiway members. After campaigning online, on screen, and in person at the theater, we surpassed that goal with 107 first-time members. Classroom Outreach Initiative This year we began to lay the foundation for the Hiway Theater Classroom Outreach Initiative. We met with local teachers to build a program that reflects the interests and curriculum of schools in our area. The Hiway Classroom is a new program that offers an immersive, big-screen learning experience to local schools. The program offers different options for schools to bring students during school hours to the theater to watch stage productions from London, classic film, as well as our current Main Attractions. Our plan is to help build visual literacy in the community by showing that our theater is not only a source of entertainment, but a resource for education.
