1 Colonnade Newsletter September 2010 Wiley and the Hairy Man Hansel and Gretel C A T O O S A C I R C L E R I N G G O L D, G A Colonnade Newsletter Wiley and the Hairy Man and Hansel and Gretel will be performed live on stage at The Colonnade September 24, 25, October 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. The Community Players, under the direction of Kim Parrish, will present these two popular children s stories which will please audiences of all ages. Ticket prices are $11 for general admission, $9 for seniors (age 55 and older) and students, and $8 for groups of 15 or more. Wiley must go out into the swamp to build a hound house for that dog of his. However, he s sure the Hairy Man is lurking nearby, and would rather stay in bed instead. Mammy won t put up with that, though, and as the best conjure woman in the whole southwest county she hopes to arm Wiley with charms and chants to keep him safe. Of course, the Hairy Man can t stand no dogs either, but that won t help Wiley. To get rid of the Hairy Man forever, Wiley must outsmart him three times, and to do that Wiley must trick him on his own. Adapted from the traditional southern folktale, Wiley is able to overcome the terrible Hairy Man and realize that he has the power in himself to face whatever fears may haunt him. Hansel and Gretel are the young children of a poor woodcutter. They have an evil step-mother who convinces their father to abandon the children in the woods as there is not enough food to feed the whole family. Hansel, aware of the plan, leaves a trail of pebbles back to the house so he and his sister find their way back home. The step-mother is angry and locks the two children up for the night with only a loaf of bread and water. The next night, the woodcutter attempts the same plan again; this time Hansel leaves a trail of bread crumbs but they get eaten by hungry birds and the two children get lost in the woods. After wandering around, Hansel and Gretel stumble across a house made of gingerbread and other confectionery. They are very hungry and begin to eat it. It is owned by an evil old witch who lures them inside. She traps Hansel in a cage and forces Gretel to do the housework, continually sweeping the house. She feeds Hansel lots of food with the intention of eating him. Eventually the witch turns on the oven. Gretel comes up behind her and kicks her into it, shuts the door firmly and padlocks it. They hang around in the house for a couple of days eating the sweets and they find some valuable gold coins. Once they are convinced that the witch is completely burnt they successfully find their way home and are met by their ecstatic father. He tells them that his evil wife is dead and they are now rich because of the gold coins' value. They all live happily ever after. Bring your family and enjoy these two adorable plays! 3 Dealt a Deadly Hand Dinner Show Looking for dinner and a show? Well, look no further! Dealt a Deadly Hand on September 10 and 11 is sure to satisfy both needs! After two sold out dinner-show productions, Closed Door Entertainment is proud to continue their attempts to wow your eyes and ears while dazzling your taste buds! This time, we are not at a Louisianan Hotel, or an insane wedding reception, but at a casino! The story takes place at Rick's club, the first legal gambling casino in the Poconos. Rick dreams of striking it rich, but will he realize his dream? With Chief Wooden Nickel and Princess Wanna Wampa two crafty Native Americans trying to claim the land and his gold-digging ex-wife Lola added to the picture, along with a two-faced lawyer, an Australian Croc Chaser with bad luck, and two little old ladies on a gambling mission, the phrase "making a killing" takes on a whole new meaning. Someone will cash in his or her chips tonight; who knows, it could be you! After their mouth-watering menu in the Spring, Elegant Moments Catering is back with a slightly altered menu, serving a baked broccoli and cheddar-stuffed chicken breast, roasted asparagus, meatballs in marinara, garlic rolls, salad, and a delicious desert, with your choice of sweet or unsweet tea! (Children s menus are available by reservation if made before the evening of the show.) Dinner is served buffet-style at 7 p.m. when the doors open, and the show begins at 7:30. Tickets are available at General Admission seating is $19, students and seniors are $16, and groups of 15 or more are $15, all including both the dinner and the show! To reserve, or for more information, call JC Smith at (423) Don't forget, our last two productions sold out, so don't be left without a seat. Reserve today! "The sun'll come out, tomorrow! Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow, there'll be sunshine!" Can you hear the tune in your head? Well, now you can hear it with your ears too! After their smash hits of The Wizard of Oz, The Hobbit, and Camelot, Closed Door Entertainment is pleased to bring you. In the heart of the Great Depression, while the hungry, huddled masses hunker under bridges and in orphanages, the most unlikely of friendships emerge!, an orphan who dreams of one day finding her parents, is selected from Ms. Hannigan's orphanage to stay with the billionaire Oliver Warbucks. With a search for 's parents using every string Warbucks has to pull (including the President himself), a shady deal between Ms. Hannigan and her good-for-nothing brother Rooster, and songs that will bring back memories from years gone by, this classic is bound to be an evening you won't forget! With JC Smith, Lora Ogden, and Paul Stone at the helm, sets by Associated Builders, drops by Dave Riall and Kathy Morris, and Closed Door's incredible costume team, this is sure to be the show of the season! Performances will be October 15, 16, 22, and 23 at 7:30 p.m., with a 1:00 p.m. matinee on the 23rd. Interpretations for the deaf will be provided during the evening performance on the 16th. School matinees are available by reservation only! For tickets or information, call (706) COLONNADE NEWS L ET TER Page 3

4 A Christmas Story A Christmas Story will be performed live on stage by The Community Players, under the direction of Heidi Riddle November 19, 20, 26, and 27 at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $11 for general admission, $9 for seniors (age 55 and older) and students, and $8 for groups of 15 or more. Ralphie, a young boy growing up in the '40's, dreams of owning a Red Rider BB gun. He sets out to convince the world this is the perfect gift. But along the way, he runs into opposition from his parents, his teacher, and even good 'ol Santa Claus himself. Nine-year-old Ralph "Ralphie" Parker wants only one thing for Christmas -- an official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model BB rifle with a compass in the stock. Between his younger brother Randy and having to handle school bully Scut Farkus, Ralphie doesn't know how he'll ever survive long enough to get the BB gun for Christmas. When Ralph asks his mother for a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, she says, "No, you'll shoot your eye out". When Mrs. Shields, Ralph's teacher at Harding Elementary School, assigns the class to write a theme about what they want for Christmas, Ralph sees a golden opportunity to express his desire to have a Red Ryder BB gun. Ralph gets a C+ on the theme, and Mrs. Shields has written "You'll shoot your eye out" on the theme. Ralph's next plan is to ask Santa Claus for a Red Ryder BB gun, and how does Santa respond? By saying "You'll shoot your eye out, kid." By this time, Ralph has had enough of that. When Scut Farkus and his sidekick Grover Dill start in on Ralph while he's on his way home from school that day, Ralph knocks Grover Dill to the ground, beats Scut's face bloody, and then pounds Scut's head on the snow-covered ground several times. Ralph thinks he'll never get the BB gun for Christmas now. And all of the other kids are going to be getting what they want for Christmas. But someone may have planned a surprise for Ralph. Come out and enjoy this fun, family-oriented holiday story! Auditions Auditions for A Christmas Story will be September 20 and 21 from 6-8 p.m. Performances will be November 19, 20, 26, and 27 at 7:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Kim Parrish at: msdirectorlady@yahoo.com. Did you know that up to 60 volunteers are used in one production? Volunteers also graciously give of their time to help out in our office when special needs arise. In addition to their gift of time, our Volunteers use the proceeds from the concessions sold to enhance our beautiful facility. The lovely benches both inside the building and outside the building were donated by our Volunteers. The hall monitor welcoming guests to The Colonnade, the information case, the table in the entry way, the flowers (both inside and outside) have all been donated by our wonderful, generous volunteers.
