1 C NEWS Number 323 February 2017 Village Website: PUBLISHED BY COMPTON VILLAGE ASSOCIATION Editor: Jane Turner, Inwood House, Hog s Back, Farnham, Surrey GU10 1HE Telephone & Fax: janewturner@mac.com COMPTON VILLAGE ASSOCIATION It s the time of year when SUBSCRIPTIONS TO THE VILLAGE ASSOCIATION ARE DUE. They are unchanged again this year, at 4 per family or 2 for individuals and Senior Citizen couples. The donations generously included by many people, over and above this modest subscription, are very much appreciated. Whether you receive the NEWS by hand through your door or by , your contribution is truly valued and very welcome. The Village Association is a non-profit organisation and is responsible for organising the village Fete, managing the minibus in accordance with the joint venture agreement with the Watts Gallery, as well as producing a Welcome Pack for newcomers to the village, a useful guide to local services and organisations (which will be distributed with next month s NEWS) and of course the monthly NEWS. Last year, subscriptions were received from 170 households, which was a record! There are, however, over 400 in Compton alone, and more in Littleton who also receive the NEWS, so there is still room for improvement! Please support us - help us to continue supplying the Parish with what we hope are useful services and projects, all carried out by volunteers. Please use the form enclosed with this NEWS to send your subscription to the Treasurer, David Hunt, at Poplar Cottage, The Street, Compton, Guildford GU3 1JF. You may find it easier to do a bank transfer to the Association s account: Sort Code , Account No Please put your surname and initials as the reference. Alternatively, you can leave it in an envelope with the person who delivers your NEWS. Grateful thanks, as always, to our team of dedicated volunteers who deliver the NEWS and will collect the subs. Please could they let me know when there are envelopes to collect. January 4 th saw the long-anticipated appearance of the new Compo but it was found that the new minibus did not comply with the specification ordered and it had to go back to the suppliers to correct this. Compo returned on 17 th January with the original faults rectified and will start work in earnest before the end of January, once the drivers have received a familiarisation course. THINGS TO DO LOSELEY PARK WEDDING SHOWCASE EVENT is on Sunday 5 th February from 11am to 3.30pm. Admission and parking are FREE. View Loseley Park as it could look on your wedding day. The 17 th century Tithe Barn will be dressed for a wedding breakfast, the Great Hall in Loseley House for a civil ceremony, and you will be free to wander in the three-acre Walled Garden, a unique backdrop for Summer Drinks Receptions. Whether you already have your special day booked at Loseley or you have yet to decide on your perfect wedding venue, the Loseley team and Caper & Berry s Event Managers will also be available. To pre-register for this event, visit the website VIVACE CHORUS AND THE BRANDENBURG SINFONIA will be performing in Guildford Cathedral on Saturday 4 th March at 7.30pm. They will be playing Mozart s Mass in C Minor, Howells Requiem and Barber s Adagio for Strings. Serenity, intensity and beauty is what links this reflective and uplifting spring programme. Regularly voted as one of the most popular pieces by classical music fans, the powerfully passionate Adagio by Samuel Barber is juxtaposed with a work so personal, the composer kept it hidden from the public for 45 years: Howells wrote his Requiem in 1935 after the death of his 9-year-old son from spinal meningitis, and finally released it in 1980, only three years before his own death. And, although from one of the world s most prolific and celebrated composers, the Mass in C minor is regarded by many to be Mozart s finest choral work. This is a programme not to be missed! Tickets are 16, 21 and 26 available from Tourist Information on or online at Free pre-concert talk at 6.30pm in The Chapter House. SAM KNIGHT LIVE at the Compton Club on Saturday 11 th March from 7.30pm til late, in aid of the POPPY APPEAL. Come and listen to Sam Knight and dance the night away as he performs songs from the Rat Park Era, Pop, Soul, Motown and Rock & Roll. Tickets are each, to include a two-course dinner, and are available from Jo Ayshford on jo.ayshford@virgin.net. Full payment is required at time of booking, and please state any special dietary requirements. REVIEW OF COMPTON LITTLE THEATRE S MOTHER GOOSE

2 - 2 - The perennial favourite pantomime, Mother Goose, surely needs no introduction. Good triumphs over evil, all loose ends are neatly tied up, all live happily ever after, but what a charming tale! The sets were super, very atmospheric, and transported one back to the time of fairy tales. They were perfect in every way. I especially loved the enchanted arch setting. The costumes were absolutely brilliant, authentic to the mediaeval settings, not too glittery, not too much bling except where essential in the Mother Goose Transformation Scene in the second half! The costumes truly enhanced the audience s enjoyment of the show. The fairies costumes were a delight, both for us to see and for the youngsters to wear, I am sure. As for the costumes of Mother Goose, they had to be seen to be believed. Her make-up and hairdos too! I was very impressed by the dance numbers, a great choice of songs, excellently sung, excellently danced. What a superb evening of fine family fun. A great sense of tradition and continuity was had, as old sang along with young, all joining in of course, clapping along, tapping their feet, as Brits have been doing for, well, how long exactly? 100 years, 150 years? The jokes were all clean, funny, and not too corny. An overwhelming atmosphere full of exuberance, colour, movement, humour and excellent acting. Special praise must go to the wonderful Noel Ruddy, who played Mother Goose to perfection he also sang and danced well, and transformed himself into quite a vamp in the second half! Clive Grant played a superbly creepy Squire Sidney Snyde, with some fine body language and grimaces. Virtue and Vanity, the good and bad Fairy Queens were brilliantly cast, as were our very credible young lovers, Jack and Jill, and the cheeky son of Mother Goose, Billy Goose. Bodjit and Scarper kept turning up in various guises, living up to their names, and they led us all very well in the jolly rendering of that brilliantly catchy number Ever so Goosey, that I now can t get out of my head! Finally, of course, who could forget Candy, our much put upon Magic Goose. Quite difficult, I should think, to put in an Oscar-winning performance in an outfit as large and cumbersome (and as hot, probably) as this, but Caitlin Ruddy pulled it off a loveable, sensitive and also fun-loving Magic Goose! Contributed by Pauline Surrey, NODA representative for Guildford COMPTON FETE SATURDAY 13 th MAY Plans are in hand for what we hope will be another enjoyable and successful Village Fete. Our traditional Fete, with nearly all the stalls and entertainment organised and run by local residents, raises a considerable sum of money for local causes and charities. We provide family entertainment, with lots of activities for children. Already, the very popular JUGGLING JAKE and the MOBILE FARM have been booked. The success of our Fete depends on the contribution that local residents make and there are many ways in which you can help: Save the date and be there, with family and friends from outside the village. Buy or sell the Grand Draw tickets, which will be distributed with the April Compton NEWS, with the chance to win one of the many fabulous prizes. Can you or your business or employer contribute a Grand Draw prize, or else something (or a service) that we can auction in our Silent Auction? Help on the day. If you can spare a few hours on Saturday 13 th May, you would be making a major contribution to the success of the Fete. Please contact Peter Barnett on shadowland@talktalk.net, We can never have enough items for the stalls - plants, bric-a-brac, bottles, books, cakes, toys and games. If you have anything you wish to donate now, please do contact Peter, as above. THE PAVILION ART THEMEN QUARTET Wednesday 8 th February A huge figure on the British jazz scene since the early 60s, ART THEMEN has continued to work at the highest level both in the UK and on the international stage. 3 -3- MANE CHANCE SANCTUARY is delighted to become part of the Compton NEWS. Hopefully, most of you already know about us but for those who don t, we are the charity based in Monkshatch Garden Farm. Founded by Jenny Seagrove in 2011, the charity is now home to 28 horses who have been rescued from various situations over the last 5 years. These beautiful animals now form our healing herd and we regularly welcome children and young adults from organisations such as Shooting Star Chase, Challengers, Jigsaw+ and many more, who benefit from interaction with our horses and our volunteers. Some with life-limiting illnesses spend time sitting quietly with the horse s head in their lap, gently stroking it. Others learn many life skills from our staff and volunteers. We receive no government funding so all our income has to be fundraised or comes from grants and trusts. We also have a very small staff and rely heavily on our wonderful volunteers who help us in many ways, both at the Sanctuary with poo picks, grooming, maintenance, etc, or at fundraising events, rattling buckets or promoting the charity. We are always delighted to welcome new volunteers, particularly those who live locally. If you re interested in getting involved, please contact Abi on , amina@manechancesanctuary.org. You can see what we do and read all our news on In the meantime, if you would like to support us, we have a Table Quiz at Shackleford Village Hall on Friday 24th February at 7.30pm. Tables of 4 are 50, which includes a light supper, and we have a pot of 500 for the winning tables, plus lots of spot prizes. Teams must be registered by Tuesday 14th February by ing tickets@manechancesanctuary.org. All proceeds will go towards the great work at the Sanctuary. It would be wonderful to see a couple of tables from Compton joining the fun! THIS AND THAT HEDGEHOGS. Any mild spell can cause hedgehogs to think it s spring and to come out of hibernation. This can be very dangerous to their chances of survival and in these circumstances, they need to be taken to Hydestile Resident Animals. This is what happened to one Jean Miller found earlier this year and this joined the other 88 already there! If you see a hedgehog before early March, please get in touch with Hydestile Resident Animals ( ) or contact Jean Miller ( ) and she will arrange for the animal to be taken to Hydestile. This charity looks after many different types of animals and birds in distress and the charity s expenses are high at this time of the year. They always need towels, sheets, blankets, any spare animal food and any unused animal medication. Please help if you can. OLD BARN ANTIQUES in The Street, Compton, is looking for one or two interested people to join the Centre. You would be required to be on duty for one or two half days a week (10am to 1pm or 1pm to 4pm) and you would provide items for your own section. The Centre is well stocked and has a good reputation, having twice been featured on the TV programme Antiques Road Trip. When a customer recently asked me how I knew so much about antiques, I replied You have to be one to know one! We are not all past our sell-by date so do give us a ring on , or call in. Chloë Dancey. LOOKING FOR A BABY SITTER? Holly Flynn lives in Down Lane, Compton and is looking for babysitting opportunities in the local area to help her raise money for her charity trip with Operation Wallecea to Indonesia in the summer of Holly is 15 years old and attends the County School in Guildford. She can be contacted on or DID YOU SEE ANYTHING? Some time during the holiday season, a large holly tree was chopped down on a bridle path, crossing private land, near Van Arnhem Nurseries off the Priorsfield Road. If you saw anything that might help identify the person who did this, please contact Jamie on MELISSA BRAY currently runs very popular PILATES CLASSES in Compton Village Hall at 10am on Wednesdays. 4 - 4 - WATTS GALLERY NEWS Join us this year at Watts Gallery Artists Village for WATTS 200: CELEBRATING ENGLAND S MICHELANGELO. As you all know, G F Watts was an outstanding painter, talented sculptor, famed draughtsman and muralist, and philanthropic visionary and this year we are presenting him to the outside world as England s Michelangelo. Watts 200 is a one-off programme of exciting exhibitions and events celebrating 200 years since the birth of England s greatest Victorian artist. The season will be starting off with the first two of our three dedicated exhibitions. Our first will help you to discover Watts s singular career in A LIFE IN ART: G F WATTS , brimming with his finest works on paper. The second is MONUMENTAL MURALS, giving you a chance to see the most celebrated of Watts s creations in a major exhibition showcasing his colossal murals, one weighing almost a tonne! WATTS S BIRTHDAY - 23 rd February - will see the first of our literary events with a book launch for THE ART OF G F WATTS by our curator Dr Nicholas Tromans on Thursday 23 rd February itself at 7pm (Bar opens 6.30pm). Your party invitation is enclosed with this month s NEWS. 10 per ticket and signed copies of the book will be available for purchase. You can also join us for our first music event of the season - ZRI: SCHUBERT AT THE RED HEDGEHOG TAVERN - on Saturday 4 th March, 7.30pm, tickets 12 ( 10 concessions), 2 students. ZRI are a five-piece folk and gypsy band and you can hear them perform Schubert s String Quartet in C, newly bursting with gypsy and Hungarian themes, as part of Guildford International Music Festival. This year really is going to be an exciting one for us all and we hope that you will be able to join us, for some or all of it. For more information about Gallery events and to book tickets, phone or visit PARISH COUNCIL NEWS PARISH COUNCIL VACANCIES. The Parish Council was very sad to say farewell to FIONA CURTIS in December. Fiona has moved to Suffolk and will be very much missed, not just by the Council but by everyone in Compton. She worked tirelessly on behalf of the village in all aspects of community life and also with the bigger picture of the Local Plan and other Borough issues. Her loss will be felt for a considerable time. As a result of her move, and that of KAREN STEVENS, who has moved to France but is thankfully still acting as our eyes and ears as far as the Local Plan is concerned, we now have two vacancies on the Council. If you would like to know more about the role of a Parish Councillor and whether it would be right for you, please contact the Clerk at joanna@joannacadman.com. ANNUAL LITTER PICK. The Council's Annual Litter Pick will take place on Saturday 25 th March, starting at the Compton Club at 10am and returning there for soup at mid-day. Please come and join us for this much needed and very rewarding work. We will supply litter pickers, high vis jackets and bin bags. Please bring your own gloves and wear suitable footwear. ANNUAL PARISH MEETING. This will take place this year at Watts Gallery on Thursday 6th April. The theme will be Compton s heritage and we are promised some very interesting speakers on a subject close to all our hearts. We will start with a welcome drink at 7pm, and supper will be served during the evening. PARISH OFFICE. Don t forget! The Parish Clerk, Joanna Cadman, is in her office at Watts Gallery every Thursday afternoon, between 1.30pm and 3.30pm. The room is above the shop - please ask at the desk and they will show you how to find her. To be on the safe side, since she may be out at the Cemetery or running an errand, please phone her before coming on DIARY DATES FOR FEBRUARY TUESDAYS Bell Ringing Practice, St Nicholas Church, 8pm THURSDAYS Art Class, The Old Barn, 10am-12 noon THURSDAYS Parish Clerk available in the Pottery Office, Watts Gallery, 1.30pm-3.30pm Wed 1 st Tower Café, Puttenham Church, 2.30pm-4.30pm Sat 4 th Bingo, Compton Club, 8pm Sun 5 th Wedding Showcase, Loseley Park, 11am-3.30pm Mon 6 th Coffee Morning, Old Barn, 10am Wed 8 th the Pavilion, Guildford Rugby Club, 8pm Tues 14 th Jazz Café, Electric Theatre, 7.30pm Wed 15 th Tower Café, Puttenham Church, 2.30pm-4.30pm Fri 17 th Country Music with Hank Lee Travis, Compton Club, 8pm Sat 18 th Bingo, Compton Club, 8pm Mon 20 th Coffee Morning, Old Barn, 10am MON 20 TH DEADLINE FOR THE MARCH NEWS Thurs 23 rd Book Launch The Art of G F Watts, Watts Gallery, 7pm Fri 24 th Mane Chance Table Quiz, Shackleford Village Hall, 7.30pm Fri 3 rd MARCH Country Music with Hank Lee Travis, Compton Club, 8pm Sat 4 th Vivace Chorus & Brandenburg Sinfonia, Guildford Cathedral, 7.30pm Sat 4 th ZRI: Schubert at the Red Hedgehog Tavern, Watts Gallery, 7.30pm Sat 4 th Bingo, Compton Club, 8pm Sat 11 th Sam Knight Live, Compton Club, 7.30pm
