2 WELCOME I am excited to welcome you to the 16th season of performances and education at the George Daily Community Auditorium. We are thrilled about this season and the talent it will bring to the auditorium stage. There aren t many communities the size of Oskaloosa that have a place that fosters creativity and education like the George Daily. With the help of Friends of the Auditorium, all of our sponsors, our many volunteers, and the community as a whole, we will be able to experience a season of performing arts that we won t soon forget. You won t want to miss a single show from The Berenstain Bears, one of my personal childhood favorites, to Monty Python s Spamalot! SEASON While we are excited about the start of a new professional season, the auditorium is truly a community space. It was used 285 days in the past year (with as many as seven uses in one day) by the Oskaloosa School District, William Penn University, Oskaloosa Community Theatre, Daily Youth Theatre, and private rentals, just to name a few. A small group of people keep the auditorium operational for all the rest of us and they typically go unnoticed or un-thanked. So Randy, Jessica, Jerry, and Kaitlyn, THANK YOU! You are the wheels that keep the auditorium moving. The George Daily Community Auditorium has had a massive impact on people of all ages for the past 15 seasons and we look forward to seeing the difference it will make this year. Make sure to get your seat. The show s about to start! Amy Yarnell Friends of the Auditorium President

4 SEASON THE IMPROVISED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY Monday, October 15, :30 p.m. Adult $20, Student $10 Based on one audience suggestion (a title for a play that has yet to be written), The Improvised Shakespeare Company creates a fully improvised play in Elizabethan style. Each of the players has brushed up on his thee s and thou s to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy using the language and themes of William Shakespeare. Any hour could be filled with power struggles, star-crossed lovers, sprites, kings, queens, princesses, sword-play, rhyming couplets, asides, insults, persons in disguise and all that we ve come to expect from the pen of the Great Bard. The night could reveal a tragedy, comedy, or history. Nothing is planned-out, rehearsed, or written. Each play is completely improvised, so each play is entirely new! Sponsored by:
5 THE BERENSTAIN BEARS: FAMILY MATTERS THE MUSICAL Friday, November 16, :00 p.m. Adult $10, Student $5 Brother gets a bad grade on a test at school. Sister learns about the rules of talking to strangers. When Doc Grizzly points out that the Bears are eating too much junk food, it is a tough pill to swallow, especially for Papa, who rips his overalls trying to show off how fit he is. Everyone s secret is revealed when Mama finds Brother s test, Papa s junk food wrappers, and Sister s friend, Mr. Frog, who she snuck into the house to protect him from strangers. In the end, it becomes clear to each of the Berenstain Bears that what truly matters is family. The Berenstain Bears LIVE! is an adaptation of three of The Berenstain Bear s most beloved books: The Berenstain Bears Learn About Strangers, The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food, and The Berenstain Bears Trouble at School. This professional production uses the memorable life lessons and illustrations found within these classic books to create a new live experience appropriate for kids in Pre-K through third grade. 14 ALL ABOUT GEORGE George Daily grew up in a poor family. His father, John, was frequently absent, working as a traveling house painter. Although times were tough, John sometimes purchased small pieces of land in tax sales during his travels. Through a stroke of luck, a piece of land John purchased in Louisiana turned out to be rich with oil. George later inherited this land. Although George regularly received checks from an oil company for this rich land, he lived as a poor man. He never cashed the checks because he wanted nothing to do with the father who was so often absent in his life. No one knew about George s money until the oil company sent someone to investigate why the property taxes weren t being paid and the checks they were sending weren t being cashed. Before George died in 1993, he established a will leaving his entire estate in trust for the benefit of the Oskaloosa community. The George Daily Auditorium was made possible through the legacy of its namesake, who left his estate for the betterment of the Oskaloosa Community. What began as A Seed for Growth, the motto of the George Daily Family Trust, has grown into a venue for high-caliber performances and educational opportunities equal to those of big cities SEASON Since opening its doors in 1997, the auditorium has provided the Oskaloosa community with a place to foster the arts and enrichment activities of all sorts. The venue includes state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, a full orchestra pit, seating for 696 patrons, an intimate black box theater, a community meeting room, and a small kitchen. It also serves as one of the few large group recording studios in Iowa. On any given day, the auditorium plays host to educational children s theater workshops, high school play rehearsals, professional touring productions, regional dance competitions, business conferences, artist receptions, community productions, school assemblies, concerts, and so much more. The auditorium is also home to the Oskaloosa Symphony Orchestra. Each year brings new opportunities to the George Daily Auditorium. Join us this season to experience firsthand some of the many ways Daily makes a difference.
15 FUN FACTS There are over four miles of cable and rope used to fly the curtains and set pieces The fly system is capable of lifting the equivalent of three elephants The lighting system has 460,800 watts of capacity Scarlet O Hara could make 480 dresses from the material used to curtain the stage A four story building could be erected within the height of the stage 1,568 cubic yards of concrete and 70 tons of reinforced steel were used in its construction The cement blocks used in the construction of the auditorium would stretch over 18 miles if laid end to end There is no seat J32 because it is reserved for George Daily There is no row I because I can get confused with the number 1 Nearly 1,000 people and organizations donated money to make this auditorium a reality The auditorium has hosted nearly 200 professional events since its opening 16 years ago 1800 N 3rd Street P.O.
