3 UPFRONT UPFRONT Ladies..! The God of Smooth Michael Buble has added a second date to his Newcastle gig in December and what better Christmas present? He s at the Metro Radio Arena on Friday December 5 and now Saturday December 6 with his unique brand of utterly smooth swing. A total 150,000+ tickets were sold during a 10-date residency at The O2 last summer, followed by a further 120,000 ticket sales for his recent shows in Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham. Seems it s about time Newcastle got a look-in then. Metro Radio Arena, December 5 & 6, from 50 MODERN MANNERS FRENCH CONNECTION TOM ALDRIDGE, 21, Alistair McGowan stars as Henry Higgins in a five-day run of George Bernard Shaw s masterpiece Pygmalion at The Theatre Royal soon. Perhaps best known as the inspiration for the musical My Fair Lady, Pygmalion is packed with larger-than-life characters and remains one of Shaw s most popular plays. Theatre Royal, April 22-26, from 12 MORE FROM MICHAEL Dawn French is heading to the Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre with her first-ever solo show. Settling somewhere between stand-up and spoken word, 30 Million Minutes is a tour about French s life and career with the odd irksome anecdote thrown in for good measure. Watch out Lenny Henry Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre, September 26, BUNNYMEN BOUNCE BACK Great news for music fans of a certain age...post-punk icons Echo and the Bunnymen are at the Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre on May 13 following the release of their first studio album in more than four years. Who can forget classics like The Cutter and The Killing Moon, and with three Gold albums they are are one of the most seminal British rock acts in modern history. The new album Meteorites - their twelfth - is out on April 28. Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre, May 13, from I WENT TO... JESMOND, STUDENT I saw Patrick Monahan at The Stand a couple of weeks ago. It s like watching someone in your front room, but it can get quite intense at times, being so close to the act. You definitely get your money s worth, with low prices and student discounts. You get a couple of hours entertainment and it s cheaper than the cinema. It s unique. FASHION! WITH SANDRA TANG MARKETING AND EVENTS MANAGER, NE1 It s almost here! Here s what I love most about NE1 s Newcastle Fashion Week, May 9-17: The amazing events: In the past, we ve turned the Millennium Bridge into a catwalk, had live mannequins in Fenwick s window and staged numerous fashion shoots. This year will be no exception. The stars: We ve worked and partied with the likes of Wayne Hemingway, Scott Henshall, Caryn Franklin, Will.I.Am, Dizzee Rascal, Diana Vickers and Lauren Pope in the past. Here s to many more celebs for Northumbria Uni Graduate show: Among the best catwalk shows I ve seen, and I ve attended a fair few, including London Fashion Week. Lauren Luke: The internet make-up sensation is our speaker on May 16 at 6.30pm at Northumbria University. Fashion Front Row: At Tiger Tiger on May 14 with this year s headline design house, Talullah Love. Swanning around Newcastle: In our sponsor s Mercedes branded in NE1 s Newcastle Fashion Week livery and working with our other sponsor, DDCA The Creative Agency. It s a hard job, but someone has to do it! For more info, visit

The man with the scissors speaks... BEST FOR THREADS? Reiss. You can t beat it for quality and price, and the staff are great. One of my favourite shops. BEST FOR FOOD AND DRINK? Caffe Vivo. Great food and it s always evolving. The Bacchus is great and it s opposite my front door. BEST FOR MUSIC? MSA. Music Slash Art - a new late room with great art and a fantastic range of music. BEST FOR PERFORMANCE? Theatre Royal and The Stand. I love them both, and they re both just around the corner. BEST COFFEE? Panis next door they make you feel like you re part of their family, which is just brilliant. Owen Oldroyd and Tom Colley in The Two Worlds of Charlie F THEATRE OF WAR One of the more unusual and compelling pieces of theatre to come to the region this year is The Two Worlds of Charlie F at the Theatre Royal; the story of Afghan veteran and amputee Lance Corporal Charlie Fowler as told by a cast which includes veterans, some of them severely injured in conflict. Charlie is one of many veterans who have used theatre in their recovery process; an exercise which led to the creation of this award-winning play. It sold out in London and is now on a major UK and international tour performed by serving and veteran soldiers. Members of the cast have made the leap from the theatre of war to the conventional theatre with a good deal of success. This is darkly comic stuff, uplifting and challenging at the same time, and without doubt theatre at its most direct. The run at the Theatre Royal includes a gala night on April 28, with drinks with the cast after the performance ( 50). There s also a post-show talk on Tuesday April 29. Theatre Royal, April 28-May 3, I WENT TO... RACHEL STOCKDALE, 23, HEATON I was at Northern Stage last week to see my friends in a play called Send More Paper. The production company gets local actors to come together and create their own performance, which makes the plays unique and individual to the city. They also do great Greek mezze dishes, with a discount if you buy a ticket for a show. Excellent value for money. OUT AND PROUD The brains behind Newcastle Pride have just announced the line-up for the festival s new second stage outside the Centre for Life. From Friday July 18, the festival, of which NE1 is a main sponsor, features an extended three days of music and entertainment. For the first time, there s a main stage at the Town Moor with Shayne Ward and the Vengaboys and a second stage in the city centre. Acts include Kelly Wilde, Nicki French, and in a genius move, Steps tribute act Stepstastic. Newcastle Pride is free, with some VIP tickets also available. July 18-20, SCREENAGE KICKS RIGHT THROUGH THE NIGHT After a barnstorming debut at Lane 7 earlier this year, pop-up cinema Screenage Kicks returns in May with Quentin Tarantino s 1992 classic Reservoir Dogs at The Boiler Shop Steamer. There ll be live music from K Billy s Super Sounds Band (aka The Dogs) playing the film s soundtrack live, themed food with Reservoir hot dogs and sliced ear burgers, a disco after-party, and of course, the film in all its glory. The Boiler Shop Steamer, May 1, 14 facebook.com/wearescreenagekicks TYNESIDE REVAMP UNDERWAY The builders are now in at Tyneside Cinema on Pilgrim Street, turning an empty shop on the ground floor into a 1.3m café bar. Chief executive Mark Dobson says he wants to give Newcastle a multi-purpose cabaret cinema space, where you can sit at a table, have a drink and watch a movie. Once that is complete, the current upstairs bar will be transformed into a new fourth screen, acting as a video art gallery by day and a top-notch 40- seat cinema at night. Tyneside Cinema,

Some of the more unusual venues taking part include the Tyne Bridge Tower, Tyne and Wear Archives, and the Holy Jesus Hospital. Some of the many highlights of the programme include live music in Newcastle s medieval Castle Keep, an exciting new art installation inside the Tyne Bridge s North Tower, and an intergalactic-themed event at the Laing Art Gallery. Rock OAPs Status Quo are at the Arena, Rick Wakeman is at Newcastle City Hall, and in an amzing turn of events, Elivis is live at the City Hall on May 1. The king lives! WHO KNEW ABOUT... SUNDAY ASSEMBLY The experience of church can be lifeaffirming, fulfilling, and enlightening, but who s to say you need to believe in a deity to join in the fun? That s the view of two stand-up comedians who are both atheists but wanted to do something that had all the best bits of church without the religion, and with awesome pop songs. Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans set up the Sunday Assembly as a sort of church for the godless. It started in London but somehow ascended to the promised land (that s Newcastle to us). Each Assembly has an order of service which ties in with a theme such as ambition, friends and family, or home, followed by those awesome pop songs we talked about earlier (Don t Stop Me Now, Dancing Queen and such like). There are now 28 assemblies across the world, including Newcastle s at The Stand Comedy Club every last Sunday in the month. Plans are afoot for a house band, a collection for the food bank and more community activities. Hallelujah! At The Stand Comedy Club, April 27, facebook.com/ SundayAssemblyNewcastle

7 FOOD & DRINK FOOD & DRINK THE EAT ON THE STREET NEXT BING THING Tell you what, they come up with some weird names for food these days, but who cares when Mr Bing s Urban Asian Crêpes taste this good? The new kitchen has just popped up on Clayton Street offering Asian-style street crêpes, known as 'bings', with a variety of fillings, plus noodles and traditional dishes. The bings are quick, affordable, and good for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. They tell us they re having an official launch in May, but they re already doing a roaring trade. Just go Mr Bing, Clayton Street, tel SAINTLY OPTION Our spies tell us that the old Saints Hairdressing on the corner of Collingwood Street is about to re-open as a bistro kitchen called Two Fifths, majoring in modern British food, a well-stocked bar and cocktails. It s going to be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus late-night schmoozing. Two Fifths is on Facebook TO THE FORE Lane7, the kitchen and bowling alley which has made bowling cool again, has added mini-golf to its repertoire. Now, and for a limited period, you can follow up an American diner-style dinner of house smoked baby-back ribs, blackened Cajun salmon, or piri piri bbq spatchcock chicken, with a round of a seven-hole mini golf course. Booking is advised. Every putter has a name and at the final hole you can try the impossible putt. If you hole it, you win the round outright and your ball magically wends its way to the bar where a free drink awaits. Genius. Lane7, St James Boulevard, for bookings tel FAT HIPPO GOES UNDERGROUND After scoring a hit with their flagship burger joint in West Jesmond, the Fat Hippos have wandered into town with a new underground restaurant on Shakespeare Street. Appropriately named Fat Hippo Underground, it s serving up the same tasty menu as its namesake with the added bonus of being a stone s throw away from the city centre venues of Grey Street and High Bridge. Fat Hippo Underground, Shakespeare Street THIS WEEK......We ve mostly been eating veggie quiche at the Crisis Skylight Cafe. This place is a gem, providing work and a sense of purpose to people in need, and serving up fantastic food in homely kitchen surroundings. We love the curry, the soup (always veggie), leek and aubergine bake and the breakfast double egg sandwich. Tasty! Crisis Skylight Cafe, City Road, SYED ALI, 33, ELSWICK "I really like that all-you-can-eat place ZaZa Bazaar in the Gate. I ve got two kids so it kept them busy! The variety is brilliant, it has everything. Kids under three also eat free." HINS CHAN, 18, NEWCASTLE "Little Asia in Chinatown is excellent. The food is very close to my culture and the quality is very good. You pay around 7.50 for a main which is good value for money. I m there about three times a week."

8 COMEDY COMEDY TODAY I M WEARING... I like to stay on trend, but don t really like shopping that much. It s easy to run into town quickly, grab stuff, then get away. No hassle! Mac, I ve had it for years. After a packed five-day showcase at Baltic Square last October, Jesterval pitches up in June when it is set to be bigger, and dare we tempt fate warmer than its predecessor. Manford opens the festival on June 6 and is followed by shows from Mock The Week s Stewart Francis, former Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Brendon Burns, Tony Law, Craig Campbell and alternative comedy favourite Simon Munnery. Local favourites Dave Johns, Carl Hutchinson, Lee Kyle and Jason Cook, writer of the BBC2 sitcom Hebburn, are also on the festival bill. There are also some family shows on the programme, and with clown acts, comedy and mime, there are plenty of free weekend activities to keep the kids occupied while you enjoy a cold one. Baltic Square, June 6-14, 5 to with free family shows SITCOM CLUB FOR THE STAND He s outspoken about the shortcomings of modern stand-up, and as if to prove it, Geordie comedian Gavin Webster has launched a new monthly live show dedicated to classic comedy favourites selected by him. Gavin Webster s Sitcom Club is at The Stand Comedy Club. It promises brilliant situation comedy from the glory days of TV comedy. From Steptoe and Son to Porridge, to Dad s Army and many more classics, Sitcom Club screens a mixture of gems you may not have seen, some it s always fun to revisit, and sitcoms so bad they re funny (US Red Dwarf, anyone?). All this is tied together by commentary from funnyman Webster himself, which is worth the entry fee alone. 9 PROFILE PROFILE NO MORE KNOB JOKES FRANK SKINNER S ALL GROWN UP I JUST DON T THINK ABOUT SEX AS MUCH AS I USED TO Last year, at the age of 56, Frank Skinner became a father for the first time. His son Buzz named after the astronaut (Aldrin, not Lightyear) is still finding his feet, and Skinner is discovering one or two things about himself as well. He is no longer the gobby, beerswilling Three Lions On A Shirt lad, and he s finally growing up. I ve done a lot of knob jokes in my time, but your comedy should be a reflection of what s in your head, he says. I just don t think about sex as much as I used to. Honestly, I don t! The die-hard fans who have booked tickets for Skinner s Newcastle show need not imagine he s become entirely safe, however, as there is still a healthy dose of filth in the show. If I didn t do it, it would be like Bernie Clifton not performing with his ostrich, he says. Skinner isn t the only thing in comedy that s changed. In the years he s been performing stand-up, the genre has been turned on its head and telly s fascination with Michael McIntyre and his merry men has thrust Skinner into different arenas. Hence, he currently enjoys a cushy job hosting BBC s Room 101 and Radio 4 has just commissioned Newcastle City Hall, April 25, a new six-part series of his comedy discussion show The Rest is History. But this is his first tour in seven years. So why now? I just love interacting with an audience, he says. When it goes well, suddenly I feel like I m part of the audience as well. That s very exhilirating. Last week there was a woman in the front row with an American accent and I asked if she was from the US. She replied, No, I m from Iraq. The audience laughed about it for at least a minute. Those moments are precious because they re not repeatable. They happen so quickly that you re not even aware of the process. After seven years out, Skinner brings Man In A Suit to Newcastle City Hall, and admits he s enjoying this tour considerably more than his last outing in Back then I was still feeling a strong obligation to be who I was in 1997, he says. I m never good at playing a version of myself. I like being me and reflecting where I am at that time. But I ve always had the showingoff gene. I see it now in my son. The other day he did an impression of me doing my impression of Louis Armstrong. I don t think I ve ever been prouder

The band, who recently released their third album Big TV, join the multi-grammy and Brit award-winning Tennessee rockers in Newcastle on Saturday May 31 for the band s only UK stadium show. St. James Park, May 31, from 55 THE OLD ONES ARE THE BEST In a remarkable pairing, rock n roll pensioners Status Quo are set to appear in Newcastle with cockney pub singers Chas and Dave. With a rumoured combined age of 402, the Quo line-up includes new drummer Leon Cave alongside Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Andy Bown and John Rhino Edwards. Chas and Dave, who are mere bairns by comparison, will warm up the hordes beforehand. Unmissable. Metro Radio Arena, December 8, SAGE ONE OF WORLD S TOP 15 Its detractors once called it the Slug, which was unfair and unwarranted, but since it opened The Sage Gateshead has shut them all up, doing remarkable work to keep the region on the national and international map. Now, the iconic venue has been named one of the world s top 15 music halls in a list compiled by Emporis. It praises The Sage s remarkable architecture, offering audiences a great show before they have taken their seats, which is nice. www. On Saturday May 24, some 40 artists will take over nine venues in the Ouseburn Valley for Evolution Emerging. It s basically the Glastonbury of the local music calendar, featuring some of the best emerging talent the North East has to offer. The line-up includes Vinyl Jacket, Bridie Jackson and The Arbour (pictured right), Boy Jumps Ship, Gallery Circus and The Lake Poets (pictured above). Ouseburn Valley, May 24, 7pm-3am, 3 TUNE IN WITH BOB ALLEN Newcastle always punches above its weight in terms of musical talent and it s incredibly vibrant at the moment, from the anthemic alt-rock of Boy Jumps Ship to the ethereal folk of Bridie Jackson and The Arbour. Gaining strong support from the likes of Kerrang! and Rock Sound, Boy Jumps Ship are building a fervent following through releases and constant touring. So much so that they ve now signed to Rude Records and toured Europe with Arcane Roots. Bridie Jackson and The Arbour (pictured below), meanwhile, were crowned Glastonbury Emerging Talent winners in 2013 and following airplay on BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music they re releasing their second album in May before headlining at Generator s Evolution Emerging event later the same month. 11 Q&A Q&A LOOKING GOOD, BOYS... We presented the boys with our NE1 s Newcastle Fashion Week t-shirts and they were delighted with them. James I love my new t-shirt I always need clean clothes. YOU ASK THE QUESTIONS MCBUSTED, THE SPECTACULAR PAIRING OF BOYBANDS MCFLY AND BUSTED, ARE ABOUT TO MELT 10,000 TEENAGE HEARTS IN NEWCASTLE. HERE ARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON QUESTIONS ASKED BY NE1 READERS What do you do when you re on tour (apart from gigs)? Matt We re travelling so much, sometimes we don t wake up until 4pm, then we go straight to rehearsal at the venue, do the gig, go to bed, and set off to the next place. Sometimes we don t see anything of a place. Are you going to record together? Matt I hope so, but to be honest we don t know what s going on. We announced 11 dates and it just went crazy. Now we re just playing catch-up. Tom It s all taken us by surprise. The response from everyone has been crazy. The dates sold out in 300 seconds. That s five minutes, you know. It s mad! Harry We ve talked about recording, and I think we know what we want to be about now. Tom We re the biggest fans of our own bands, if you see what I mean, so we want the same as all the fans, but that doesn t mean that we re definitely going to release music. We want it to be incredible. Anything we do has to live up to the legacy of Busted and McFly. The expectations will be so high, it has to be perfect. Matt Yeah, we don t want to rush it. It would be cool to have some songs that incorporate a lot of vocals because there are so many singers in the band, It would be great to have maybe some crazy harmony action going on. Some songs with hooks that depend on big group vocals would be marvellous. You know the sort of thing; Beach Boys-type of stuff. That s right for us. We do want to do it, but it s early days and up to now it s been a bit of a blur. We only announced our dates a few weeks ago. We only want to create an album if it s very good. It s got to be perfect. Are you planning to work with any other writers? Danny Of course! We re open to working with a lot of people. James I like working with different people, just like this. It s great. Matt I was writing with Steve Robson last year, before I knew this was all going to happen with the bands. Steve did our first album. Me, Tom and the rest of the guys love writing our own songs. Harry There s a lot of songwriting talent in the combined band, and I think everyone s open to anything right now. We re just having fun. Matt Don t be surprised if you see James wearing that t-shirt on TV. James, have you got a clean t-shirt on? James Yes! Ha! MCBUSTED LOVE NEWCASTLE! Tom It s a beautiful, amazing city. I love coming here. Danny Every time we come back here, I get a bit of a buzz, it s quite a buzzy place. We went for a little jog when we were here last time and the last TOTP performance we played was in on a yacht would you believe? I love the Quayside. The bars down there are really cool. Matt It s great down there. I ve been to Pitcher and Piano a few times. I love it there. McBusted are at the Metro Radio Arena on April
