4 Act I Act II Setting: Websterbridge, New Hampshire Time: A dark winter night in Dudgeon's, in the morning (Intermission) --The home of Rev. Anderson, the evening of the same day (Intermission) Act Ill, Scene 1 --The anteroom, the next day Scene 2 --The courtroom later that day Scene 3 --The town square, later that day Ladies and Gentlemen: Welcome to this evening's performance of G. Bernard Shaw's The De viz's Disciple. Since this 50th year is comprised of shows which you have enjoyed in the past, we wanted to give this classic Melodrama a modern look. Although The Devil's Disciple is a bag of old Melodramatic tricks (the scapegrace with a better nature who protects an oppressed orphan, the reading of a will in his favor, the heroic sacrifice, the court-martial, scaffold and reprieve), they are used to drive home a deeper emotion and moral contrary to the ethics of Melodrama. Not only does the hero of this one disappoint the expectations excited by his romantic, role by repudiating the notion that he was sacrificing his life for the heroine's sake, but this heroism itself is finally exhibited to a disadvantage beside the really efficient though unself-sacrificing energy of a robust, entirely prosaic parson. Everything that had happened before had made us feel the superiority of Richard; but however keenly we had felt that, or the Author himself had sympathized with him, he was not going to permit us to exalt martyrdom above effective service in a cause... 14 AACTANDGBS Ann Arbor Civic Theatre, now in its fiftieth season, managed to survive and prosper for the first thirty of those years without recourse to the works of George Bernard Shaw. Obviously, such abstemiousness could not go on forever. So, in January 1960, believing that we were ready for Mr. Shaw-and hoping that he was ready for us- we took the plunge with a sparkling production of Major Barbara. Jerry Sandler directed; prominent in the cast were Ann Arbor notables Zeke Jabbour, Winifred Pierce, Allan Schreiber, Jim-Bob Stephenson, Phyllis Wright, and a promising newcomer named Beverley J. Pooley. Alice Crawford designed the sets, which were described by a veteran theatre-goer of the time as the most adventurous and exciting sets so far designed for a Civic Theatre production. Having found this marriage of Playwright Shaw and the Players of AACT to be highly successful, the partners have been repeating their vows at somewhat irregular intervals ever since. In March 1965, the production was Candida, starring Aileen. Mengel as Candida and Dr. Robert Green as Reverend Morell. Also in the cast was a man who has since become one of the best-known people in Ann Arbor theatrical circles, Mr. Norman Gibson. Ted Heusel directed, and au of M student named John Haber played Marchbanks and designed the set. Two years later, in March 1967, we first brought The Devil's Disciple to Lydia Mendelssohn stage. Some familiar names reappeared: Allan Schreiber, directing this time, also playing the Sergeant; Alice Crawford as set designer; and the promising newcomer--now a seasoned leading man--beverley Pooley, as Richard Dudgeon. Bette Ellis was cast as Mrs. Dudgeon, Kathy Kosobud played Essie, the Reverend Anthony Anderson and his wife Judith were played by Alfred Reilly and Mari Anne Annis. Also in the cast were such AACT stalwarts as the father-and-son team of Dave and Larry Harbison, Warren Eveland, John Rae, Cora Greenberg, and Mike Gould. The dashing General Burgoyne was played by George Scrivener, an exchange teacher from Thaxted, England, who had given us generously of his talents in conducting our acting workshop during that season. The list of names on the production staff was a roster of the cream of AACT. The construction of the gallows on a wagon, to be wheeled Upstage Center at the proper moment, was a triumph of the technical crew headed by Bob Seeman. 15 Our forty-second season opened with Misalliance, billed as "George Bernard Shaw at his wittiest and most outrageous, in a comedy about love and marriage, turn-of-the-century style." Produced in October 1971, it flourished under the inspired direction of John Reid Klein. The elegant Victorian set, designed by Jim Fisher, featured a huge, domed conservatory window upstage, a round love-seat, and a "new, portable Turkish bath." On the cast list were two names which also appear on your program tonight: Charles Sutherland and-beverley J. Pooley. Arms and the Man came next, in October Directed by Jan Stolarevsky, it was costumed in charming Old Bulgarian style by Marianna Hoad. The cast, in alphabetical order, included Erik Hansen, James Henriksen, Leo McNamara, Susan Morris, Ray Nieto as Bluntschli, Diane Pomerance, Beverley J. Pooley as Major Petkoff, and Cathe Wright. Our forty-eighth season included a production of You Never Can Tel~ the play described by G. K. Chesterton as the nearest approach of Shaw to the purely comic. Charles Sutherland directed, and the ingenious sets were designed by William L. Schiefer. A number of new names appeared in the cast list, along with such familiars as Marie Gilson, Sandra Hudson, and Father Alex Miller. And now, to open the season of our half-century birthday, we dip into our Shavian history to revive The Devil's Disciple. Noting in passing how often we have opened our season with a play by Mr. Shaw, you may well conclude that we hope you enjoy him as much as we do.
