Audition Workshops: We will be offering two audition workshops to assist with the audition process. During these workshops, we will be offering feedback on singing, dancing and acting with regards to the audition. CASTING As it is the directors job to cast the show, we view the production as a whole not as individual parts that seem less or more important than others. As a result, everyone s contribution is important and valued. We kindly ask that you trust in our decisions and realize the importance of working together as an ensemble, with each actor viewing his or her role as an important part of the entire project. The cast list will be posted outside the Lowers Commons, outside Ms. Saavedra s Classroom, and on the Website by Tuesday, November 20. 2
PRODUCTION Scripts: Each member of the cast will receive a souvenir script for the show. They will need to take care of the script. If lost, a new one can be purchased for $20. Please write down all blocking and notes in your script as well as bring it with you during rehearsals. Practice: Students are required to practice every evening just as if they are doing homework. All songs and music are located on the website. They can be downloaded through the website as well. If you are unable to get the music through our website, please bring a cd disc to Mrs. Postle and one will be made for you. Shoes: Each cast member will be responsible for supplying his or her shoes. Ladies will need ballet flats or black/tan character shoes no higher than 2 ½ heel height. Gentleman will need comfortable black lace up jazz shoes or character oxfords. SHOES MUST BE BROUGHT TO DANCE AND BLOCKING REHEARSALS. Costumes: Students may be asked to bring costume pieces from their own closet. All costumes pieces borrowed by TES must be returned to TES once the production has completed. Makeup: Students will be required to wear some type of stage paint for under the heavy performance lights. Students will need to bring their own makeup. During production students must supply their own bag to hold their shoes and makeup. Technical Crew: You must sign up for an audition time as well. During your audition/interview, we will ask you questions regarding your interests and experience so that you may be placed in the appropriate position. Each crew member will be assigned to a crew and responsible for various technical details. REHEARSALS The rehearsals take place during the second and two weeks into the third trimester study hall. If students are signed up to be in the musical, they were placed in the day 2 rotation of study hall. During second third trimester study hall, students will be required to be in class working on lines and rehearsing their scenes, music and dances. If a student misses more than 4 rehearsals, their role will be reassigned. Cast Participation and Attendance Requirements Once the audition process is complete, in order to maintain active participation status, a cast member must: Students and Parents must read and sign the Middle School Musical Packet. Comply with the TES Honor Code. Student not complying with the TES Honor Code will be dismissed from the show and their role will be reassigned. Bring script and music to every rehearsal. Take proper care of all materials including scripts, props, set pieces and costumes. Participate fully in all rehearsals and performances. Respect all Musical Theater staff, volunteers and participants. 3
PERFORMANCES AND REHEARSALS This year, there are no conflicts with TES sports and afterschool rehearsals. We have been working with our Athletic Director to avoid sports practices and meets. These rehearsals are mandatory and students can miss only one afterschool rehearsal but no performances. It is imperative that when students sign up they are committed to attending rehearsals and performances. Ensemble rehearsals are during DAY 1 Study Hall and run from Monday, November 26 to March 15. If casted as a lead, students may have rehearsals during a weekday afterschool. If a student is not in rehearsal during a study hall day they will be asked to attend study hall for that rehearsal. 7 The Audition Process Dance Audition: The kids will learn a short combination of multiple steps that they will perform for us in groups. We will assess how well they can dance in order to group them in certain dance numbers. Everyone will be involved in this. Acting and Singing Audition: Closed Auditions. Actors are to learn and sing their song one by one. Actors are asked to sing their song. Song choice should be in the same style as the music from the show. If auditioning for a character part, try to find a song that suits that character. - They will later be asked to do their lines, which will is included in this packet. (These should be prepared as much as possible. We get to see a lot more of their personality and acting skills when they are not fully inhibited by a cold reading script. We try to make this process as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Remember to have fun!! Callbacks: At the end of the second day, we may group kids together that we are interested in for certain parts. Not getting called back doesn t mean we didn t like someone; we may just not need to see them again. Audition Materials Audition Songs: Please prepare one of the following pieces of music for the audition you may sing any of them, but you will only be allowed to sing one of them at the time of the audition. In addition to what is listed below, anyone may sing Into the Woods Act I Opening, Part 9 (m. 1-12) Ladies Red: I Know Things Now (m.33 end) Cinderella/ s Wife: On the steps of the palace (m.1-22) Witch: Stay with me (m.8-27) Gentlemen : It takes two (m ) : Giants in the Sky (m.20-37) Prince(s): Agony (m. 1-17) Audition Scenes: Scenes are included after page 8 of this packet. Please be prepared to read for any of these roles at auditions. Plot: The Brothers Grimm "go Broadway" in this cockeyed fairy tale where all of your favorite characters (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, (of beanstalk fame) and The Witch) meet and interact on their journeys. The sophisticated score by Stephen Sondheim has been adapted to make it easier, though still challenging, for the young talented singers and actors. Into The Woods Junior is a funny and engaging way to get young people to think about the stories with which they've grown up and the ethical issues raised therein. 7
Narrator 1 Narrator 2 's Wife Little Red Wolf Witch 's mom Milky White Cinderella Stepmother Florinda (stepsister) Lucinda (stepsister) Steward Cinderella's Prince Rapunzel Rapunzel's Prince Mysterious Man Cinderella's mother Sleeping Beauty Milky White 2 Granny Snow White Sleeping Beauty Dwarfs Little Red Ridinghood and Wolf Good day, young lady. Good day, Mr. Wolf. ( resumes. continues. stops her again. MUSIC stops) Whither away so hurriedly? To my grandmother's. (MUSIC resumes. continues briefly. stops her once more) And what might be in your basket? Bread and wine, so Grandmother will have something good to make her strong. And where might your grandmother live? (BAKER APPEARS behind a tree and eavesdrops) Further in the Woods; her house stands under three large oak trees. ( grunts and watches skip off; HE howls and EXITS) BAKER (Horrified) Is harm to come to that little girl... in the red cape! 8
SIDE 2 But Grandmother, what big eyes you have! The better to see you with, my dear. Oh, Grandmother - what a terrible, big, wet mouth you have! The better to eat you with! (Bloodcurdling scream from, who DISAPPEARS) CINDERELLA & BAKER S WIFE (BAKER'S WIFE races ONSTAGE) Don't come any closer to me! CINDERELLA (Breathless) Please, just hear me out! BAKER'S WIFE CINDERELLA We have nothing to discuss. You have attacked me once before - BAKER'S WIFE I did not attack you! I attacked your shoe. I need it. (Reaches into her pocket) Here. Here is a magic bean in exchange for it. (Hands CINDERELLA the bean) Magic bean? (Takes bean) CINDERELLA Nonsense! (Throws the bean away) I've already given up one shoe this evening. My feet cannot bear to give up another. (Begins to leave) (Rising) I need that shoe to have a child! BAKER'S WIFE That makes no sense! CINDERELLA (We hear RUMBLINGS from the distance) 9
THE WITCH & RAPUNZEL SIDE 2 (WITCH drags RAPUNZEL ONSTAGE and throws her to the ground) Why didn't you tell me you had a visitor? WITCH It was lonely atop that tower. RAPUNZEL (Stroking RAPUNZEL'S HAIR) I gave you protection and yet you disobeyed me. WITCH I am no longer a child. I wish to see the world. RAPUNZEL WITCH I will not share you, but I will show you a world you've never seen. (Cuts RAPUNZEL'S HAIR) No! NO! RAPUNZEL JACK & BAKER Good Fortune! Good fortune, sir! Look what I have! Here s five gold pieces. (Astounded) Five gold pieces! (he examines the gold) I had more, but my mother made me surrender them. She allowed me these five to do with as I pleased. Oh, my. Where is Milky-White? 10
Milky-White is back home with my wife. Let s go find them! (he grabs the baker and starts to pull him away) Wait! I don t know that I wish to sell. But you said I might buy her back. I know, but I m not certain that five gold pieces would- Are you saying that you wish more money? More money is always- (hands him gold) keep this. I will go fetch more. 11
