7 P A G E 7 Thoughts on Winning a Gem Jewel Box has and will always hold a very special place in my heart, and it is always a great honor to be recognized through the Gem Awards for the work that I have done there. This particular award, however, has an extra bit of meaning for me. Being able to share the story of Charlie, and to see the way it seemed to resonate with audiences was such an incredible experience. His story is one that made me think about what it is to be human - our joys, our sorrows, our failures, and our triumphs - and if any audience member left thinking about life in a different way even if just for a moment - that makes this award, and the story of Flowers for Algernon worthy being told. - Dalton Thomas, Best Actor

8 P A G E 8 Thoughts on Winning a Gem Gem Banquet Night...for me nervous and exciting, and then thrilling to be honored with the award among so many fine performances. I loved becoming Opal, I loved my excellent cast mates, loved my director and crew. And I love this theatre. After exactly 30 years and 14 productions at Jewel Box, working with wonderful people onstage and backstage, being led by outstanding directors, I'm saying to Jewel Box: "Judas, what a ride! I wanna make a toast to my old and new friends. If you got friends in the world nothing real bad can happen to you. An' that's the truth." - Vicki Wilcox, Best Actress

9 P A G E 9 Thoughts on Winning a Gem There are definitely more customary paths to a Gem Award. I was a mere understudy to the incomparable Jane Hall for the role of Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit. Because she became ill right before we opened, I took over the role. As I believe I remember saying at some point, though Jane is a tiny little person, she left really large shoes to fill! So to say I wasn't expecting to win would be an understatement. There were some outrageously talented ladies in the Best Supporting Actress category. But there's really nothing quite like hearing your own name called!! - Chris Harris, Best Supporting Actress

10 P A G E 1 0 Theatrically Tweed JEWEL BOX GEMS ARE SHINING What a great two weeks for the Jewel Box! 1. The Oklahoma Community Theatre Association named Jewel Box the theatre of the year. 2. Board member Jana Hester was one of three honored with the Charles Hair volunteer of the year award for her 30 years of exemplary service. 3. The Oklahoma Gazette called for information and pictures for our upcoming auditions. What a way to start the 58th season! We are so proud of all those who helped make us an Oklahoma Tradition. We start with 'Chicago', a musical we did 30 years ago, to huge success. Five shows follow that make up another stellar Jewel Box season. I'm especially happy that the patrons got to vote for one play for the season. That choice was the iconic On Golden Pond. A fun fact: Two years ago when I thought of the Boot Camp idea we had 3 volunteers. The second year we had 10 total for the season. I decided that if were to grow we would have six people for each show. This year (get ready to gasp) we have the following numbers signed up: Chicago: 10 Dial 'M' for Murder: 10 The Fourposter: 5 As Long as We Both Shall Live: 7 On Golden Pond: 7 Light Up the Sky: 7 Boot Camp is a fun way to see how a show is put on from start to finish, and you get an I survived Boot Camp T-shirt, and meet new theatre enthusiasts. We have other fun things when we start season: check out the new lobby wall, free tickets, and more! You'll be surprised. Jewel Box continues to grow, perform, and fly! 11 P A G E 1 1 ~GET FREE TICKETS WHEN YOU VOLUNTEER~ Volunteer and become part of the Jewel Box Theatre family! Choose a position for which you would like to volunteer, call us, and we ll train you! So easy, so fun, and totally free! BOX OFFICE: Greet season patrons and sell box office tickets. At intermission, sell soft drinks and our special Jewel Box blue cups. With sixteen performances per show, you can choose a week night show (7:00-9:30 pm, Thursday - Saturday.) or a Sunday matinee (1:30-3 pm). Get a free T-Shirt, too! PAINT CREW: Choose a show or two or three, and help create the set by painting the walls, floors, doors, and more. When you see the show, you know you helped make it come to life! PROPERTIES: Help the director by finding items needed on the set, or something an actor holds in his/her hand (A tray, glasses, writing pad and pencil, a hanky, etc.). We call them props. Working properties involves organizing/maintaining props during the run of the show. COSTUMES: Work with our resident costumer, Christopher Sieker, preparing costumes for actors to try on, then maintain, iron, sew, and catalogue for the show. HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Such fun to work with stylist Jacque Mooney with wigs and make-up. We have many period pieces this season, so there will be a lot of fun to create hair styles and make-up. So many fun ways to help Oklahoma City s oldest community theatre! Give us a call, and start your theatre journey with us!

12 P A G E 1 2 Chicago Fun Facts! Beulah Annan Belva Gaertner The piece is based on a true story of accused murderesses Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner. The reporter assigned to write about the case, Maurine Dallas Watkins, turned the experience into a play. Chicago has had several incarnations including the original stage play of the same name (which made it to Broadway in 1926!), a Cecil B. DeMille silent film in 1927, as the film Roxie Hart starring Ginger Rogers in 1942 and finally as the Broadway musical we know and love today! The musical almost didn t happen. When Gwen Verdon and Bob Fosse attempted to buy the rights from Ms. Watkins, she wouldn t sell them. She had become profoundly religious and thought her story glamourized the wrong things. It wasn t until her death in 1969 they, along with producer Richard Fryer were able to obtain the rights from her estate. Chicago is the first production of Jewel Box Theatre s 58th season and is sure to be a show you won t want to miss!
